This is THE place to try axe throwing. We stopped here on a whim with our kiddo after touring K-State. To be honest, I wasn't super excited at first. We've been to maybe six different axe throwing places, and it can be a struggle. The axe too often pings off the board, and the game moves too slowly or gets repetitive. That was not the case at Manhatchet. The owner, James, takes a few minutes with each group to help fine-tune your throwing technique. We all hit a bull's-eye within our first few practice throws and were ready to go. Each lane has a soft wood backboard, so the axe usually sticks. There are at least a dozen different games that pair with an iPad for each group. We really liked Bowling and Battleship. We highly recommend this place! We had a fun afternoon with the family here. We were given instructions on throwing and tips for each of us to throw better. We had 2 lanes for 8 of us. We played many different games of which different targets are projected onto the backboard. We played tic-tax-toe, battleship, little targets and big targets. I can honestly express that I never thought in a zillion years I would be throwing axes. Eric R. had tried the mobile axe unit before the storefront was built at a Third Thursday in the street. I watched him do it but it was not really something I aspired to do. Then, I saw Hilary Duff's and Sutton Foster's characters in Younger throw axes last season after a stressful work day. Then, it came time for a social outing. My options were axe throwing or horror movie. I asked if we could just do dinner instead. Well, we ended up with dinner at Tallgrass and reservations here. I insisted on "just watching" but was coaxed into participating via peer pressure. A reservation is for a 90 minute time slot. There were TVs on above the stations (kind of line being assigned to a bowling lane, we were in one station of the three in our row). Initially, our coach showed us what to do and provided the standard axe. The boards were replaced that day so he dampened them with water. I observed Eric R., Edmundo, and Perla R. throw axes. The coach got a smaller axe for Perla that was lighter. They did a few rounds and eventually I was peer pressured into trying. It took me a few tries but I got the smaller axe to stick (see video). Then I moved onto the bigger, heavier axe and could get it to stick in one place (so I would not be winning any games because of the point values). Perla R. kept trying so the coach brought out two more axes with different features for us to try. One is a competition axe that had a longer blade. I managed to get all four axes to stick onto the board with some extra coaching by the owner. He stopped by and shared information about the business as it is pretty new, and asked for feedback. He also gave me helpful tips for throwing. There is a bar in the back area too, though I would definitely avoid drinking too much while handling a weapon. I appreciate that college football was on (well, the one Friday game of course). We enjoyed talking with the owner and our coach too. I surprised myself by giving this a try and getting the axes to stick onto the board. For some this could be a stress reliever or a place to show off and be competitive. It is $25 per person. We heard about axe throwing as a fun thing to do from some friends without anywhere specific in mind. When we were planning my son's birthday party (he's 24) we chose to include this establishment in the list of activities. We were not disappointed. This was a good first experience in axe throwing. We were provided about 15 minutes of instruction and a lane to ourselves for the 90 minutes we paid for to fine tune our technique. The lanes were safe from our axes and those of the lane next to us. The games were fun and the allotted time was plenty for the three of us. We showed up about 30 minutes early and were quickly taken to a lane with no time waiting. read more
