Okay...despite having grown up in Omaha for the most part, I cannot believe I had never been to Mangelsen's before and neither could my husband! He brought me here recently and I was blown away by how much bigger the store was than I was anticipating and how much they offered! As soon as we walked through the door, we were greeted by a staff member and then my husband steered me toward the free popcorn. Alright, fine - twist my arm, I guess I'll have some popcorn. It was freshly popped, warm, and very buttery! There was also a table of all kinds of seasonings/powders for you to dress up your popcorn however you'd like. With our popcorn in hand, we walked around the store and focused on seeing the Halloween decorations and a little bit of the Christmas decor as well. There is truly something here for everyone. There's even a jigsaw puzzle corner with signs that encourage you to bring old puzzles back for a 30% off on a new one. Coming from a puzzle family, this definitely caught my eye. We ended up getting a cute Halloween decoration and some baking supples (because, yes, they even have that!). It seemed like a lot of the items were for sale and the pricing for most things was very good! The Yelp check-in offer also sweetens the pot (but note it's ONLY for non-sale items). Stepping into Mangelsen's is like stepping into a play ground of creative juices at the ready for you. Whether you're putting together a Halloween costume, baking a cake, painting a blank canvas, or just looking around for the perfect gift for someone, Mangelsen's has almost anything you can think of. I first came here with my sister years ago and loved that you can snack on free popcorn from their popcorn maker as you're walking about the store. I love the family feel throughout the store and that they are locally and family owned. Supporting small family businesses is a soft spot for me and I'll do my best to seek these businesses out when I can. Lately, I've had a few great experiences at Mangelsen's. Last year, my boyfriend and I took a look at their picture frames in hopes of framing some of our posters in the future. They had a great selection of colors and textures you could choose from. We also found a three canvas painting he ended up buying of a moon over the ocean that was for sale. Fast forward to my birthday and I opened up my Lilo & Stitch poster that was custom framed at Mangelsen's! The colors matching and complimenting the colors in the poster. It turned out great! On that particular trip we found out they offer classes in their back room. He ended up signing us up for a Macrame plant hanger class for us during Christmas for this past weekend. It was such a fun class! Our teacher was helpful, friendly, and easy going. The knots we needed to learn were a little tricky at first but once you got them down it became easy. Mangelsen's is a wonderful local craft store that offers more than just craft supplies. I probably sound like a robot right now, but I really do highly recommend this place. 1. The selection of supplies and notions is great. I was able to pick up exactly what I needed for some pillow cases, without having to buy lots of extra. I found the exact colors I wanted of ribbon. 2. They offer services like framing and long arming your quilts, which is very nice to have it right there in the store. And they have staff who are knowledgeable and can offer recommendations. 3. The bargain bins are one of my favorites. I got drawer pulls for my cabinet that were beautiful and only a dollar apiece. I teach arts and crafts and found some glass beads that were on sale. They were super high quality, and appreciated by my students. Stuff like that keeps me coming back. 4. I haven't been there in awhile but I really must mention THE CRAFT ROOM. If you sign up for Mangelsen's calendar online, you'll get notices for when their classes are meeting, or when the room's open for your big sewing or crafting projects. It's free to use during open sew or open crafting. Just bring your machine and supplies. I really need to go back and rejoin the fun, there's just been a little situation with me being able to snag the car during their class time. I haven't been to Mangelsen's in quite some time but decided to go and search for some decorations for my daughter's birthday party. While I didn't find what I was looking for, I found myself browsing around and looking at some of their sprinkles, cookie cutters, and fabric. As a child, I frequently went to Mangelsen's with my Grandma to get yarn and other craft supplies. She would always snack on their complementary popcorn while we browse. It definitely holds some special memories for me. I feel like Mangelsen's has such a great selection of fabric compared to other vendors in the area. They carry the Ruby Star line which is full of vibrant colors and fun patterns! I love everything about them! I do wish it was a little cheaper, ($12.99 per yard) but it's definitely cheaper than Etsy, which is the only other place I've found it. read more

I've been to Mangelsen's a few times before, did not have a negative experience. A few days ago I was greeted with an individual that clearly doesn't like people of color. My kids noticed how she treated us and looked at us with disgust. It saddens me because this is where my family and I like to visit during the weekends. I love this store. I have been shopping it for at least 40 years, I have followed them all over and even remember their different locations. Yes, it could improve, but not much, it has it's own little vibe. It is very untouched by the outside world in my opinion. I have purchased many many things over the years. I dont go all that often now since I have such a large yarn and craft closet. Last time I went in after a very long hiatus, I found a great sale on some good yarn and pulled out my old rewards card and it had more on it than I ever imagined. I've been coming here since I was a kid. While known for their extensive Halloween and costuming department, they also have a nice selection of supplies for parties, cake decoration, scrapbooking, sewing, knitting, painting, crafts, floral arrangement -- the list goes on and on. They are also known for their beautiful Christmas area and framing department. I personally have had several posters and puzzles framed here and the staff has always been very helpful and knowledgeable in selection of all the options. While smaller than the big box hobby stores, they are locally owned and provide personal service. Knowing they are dog-friendly, I recently took my pooch here to browse around on a cold day. This place is an absolute joke. David mangelsen needs to be put in a nursing home he is going to run that store into the ground. It is a mess anytime I go in there anymore. Shelves aren't stocked, things are all out of place. The store is just old and really needs a facelift and a shift of employment. I know someone that was fired due to having to get a Covid-19 test done (which should be illegal if it's not) it's just ridiculous that a company that's been there so long is starting to look like a larger more expensive version of the dollar store next to it. read more

Mangelsen's is an Omaha institution. It's a giant fabric/craft store, with a costumes/stage makeup/wigs section that operates year-round but gets really big around Halloween. If you want to get a wig for a costume in Omaha and you want to deal with people who understand the theatrical mindset, you get it here. (This is also where to come if you want an Elvis wig, etc. and you don't want the bother of getting it styled.) Around Halloween they go totally bonkers and stock a bunch of extra stuff, some of which you might find at a Halloween store, but then if you're at a Halloween store, you don't get all the good stuff they carry year-round. I don't come for the fabric or the craft stuff; I come for the stage makeup. They carry Ben Nye, Graftobian, Kryolan, and Mehron, and probably a bunch of other brands. Most of the good stuff is at the counter, though some of the hanging stuff is OK. They have a pretty good selection of false eyelashes and a couple of things I haven't found elsewhere yet, like lipstick-like sticks in white. (I suspect they're used by clowns; anyway, they're handy if you need a bunch of white and want easy application.) I bought my first pot of clown white here (Kryolan) and it lasted most of a decade without getting sticky or separating. Good stuff! They also sell pencils, very finely ground powder to set your makeup, etc. They have cut back on carrying some items over the years based on what sells, so some of my favorite items (like a really great eyeliner that lasted forever) are gone now. I don't always know what I want when I come in, and I often kick myself for not bringing my makeup when I realize I've found just the thing and don't know if it matches exactly. read more

One thing I do appreciate about this place is how festive they are during major holidays like Halloween & Christmas. Nobbies used to be my main go-to place for all things Halloween but that has changed over time since their inventory is insufficient nowadays. Mangelsen's has always maintained a decent variety of Halloween decorations & costumes up to this day. They also have tons of Christmas goods during that time of the year. She designed a pattern for my mothers quilt, and she was very pleasant to work with and her follow up to advise the status was impeccable. The cashier rang me up for the same thing twice. I literally only had 7 items that should've really up around 60 ish, she almost had me rang up to ninety dollars. Returning is so annoying. They need to rescan the credit card, then recharged you again. Isn't it easier to just give me the difference in cash? This is a great place to get odd stuff and crafting stuff, but it's crowded, unorganized, & the location of it seems odd. The employees seem to need a little push in the right direction for more training. First time here and not going to really recommend it either. It's been 5 days and I haven't received my refund for the difference in my account, but the other charge is showing up as well as the wrong amount I was originally charged....... Fantastic store. I went in there to get clown makeup and Janine in Costume Room really knew her stuff. As a former clown herself she taught me the ways of Clown cream, turning me into a jester for my clown queen. Her assistant Jerome is very friendly, plus the two young chaps they have working seem to know how to dress a man. They built an entire Daffy Duck! I can't wait to go in and see what type of shenanigans happen next on my journey to becoming the Clown Prince of Omaha. But i hope to continue to go here to buy my clown makeup for me, my sister, my mother, my duck, the entire clown car. The clown wigs and masks are funny and scary, same with the costumes. First time I'd ever used this store for framing. The finished product was fine, but getting there was one of the weirdest experiences had with a store. I actually got a call from the framer because he had screwed up a poster that I had produced that he was framing for another customer and was desperate to replace. I brought down the new poster, but thought I'd get something framed for myself. This was on Jan. 31 and he told me it would be ready in two weeks and he would call. Today is Feb. 21 - I called to see if there was a chance it was done; it was and I drove to get it. The framer told me I wasn't called because they didn't have a number for me - I reminded him that HE called me first. "Yep!" he said. Turns out it had been finished Feb. 9. I have always loved this place as a child and still do. The Christmas shop area is magical. I absolutely love the Christmas Villages ( although I can never afford to buy any) they are so cool to look at. When I was younger the Halloween section scared me but they calmed it down a bit. Not like it use to be with strobe lights, spooky sounds,, etc, but still fun. You can find all type of fun candy and sodas. Last time I was in there some guy was so excited that he found an old time favorite soda of his that he took a selfie with it and bought them all. Nothing beats the free popcorn either, they have always had that. We will walk around with a bag and shop. I'm glad the place is around and hope it never goes away. read more

I love Mangelsen's.... I mean I LOVE THIS PLACE. I find it hard to come in this place and not leave without spending $50 (or more). The service is great, the selection is top-notch. I recently took a cake pop class to learn how to make some fabulous cake pops... LOVED IT!! The only thing- with the class, we got a list of 20++ items that we were supposed to bring. My aunt and I picked up most of the stuff for the class and even shared some of the stuff and it totaled over $100...which I think is a pretty exorbiant list for one class . I understand that the idea is to generate sales for the store by the students purchasing items for the class fromt the store, but considering we didn't even use 1/4 of the items we were told to buy, it was a little much (they do give a 15% discount on items for the class, which helps). Also, we had a list of 20+ items we needed to bring from our own kitchens for the class, everything from mixing bowls to paper towels. Again, I can understand they cannot provide all of the items needed for all of the students in the class, but for $25 they should have provided something. We even had to bake a cake and make frosting and bring it with us. The instructor was good, but we never received any written instructions on HOW to make the cake balls. I spent the majority of the class racing to write down the information she was telling us so I could remember how to do it for an upcoming graduation party (which is why we were taking the class). The class description mentioned we would be learning how to make eggs, chicks, and bunnies, but we didn't even have time to really start decorating the cake pops, let alone do specialty decorating like bunnies, etc. Overall, I did enjoy the class and the experience and this would never deter me from shopping here but I do think we should have gotten instructions on how to make and decorate the cake pops, and that they should have provided some of the basic materials (like the cake or mixing bowls or paper towels, etc). And the only other thing about this place that I really do not like is their bathroom. I think it is disgusting, to be perfectly frank. It always smells (and I'm there at least once per week for my job and my hobbies). It's rather dirty, they offer soap from a gross dispenser, and considering the number of shoppers in and out of that place, plus employees, ought to have a full-size bathroom with several stalls and sinks (and it should be kept cleaner). read more

This was my first visit to Mangelsen's and I was definitely impressed. I want to start off by saying that they are Pet-friendly and my little chihuahuas loved being able to shop with me. The gentleman at the cash register was very polite and answered all of my questions about classes and the services that the store offers. I'm sorry to say that I didn't catch his name, but he was very nice. I also did not catch the name of the lady working the sewing/ fabric cutting counter, but she was super helpful. She gave us advice on our project and was very welcoming toward my dogs. We really enjoyed talking with her and will use her advice to guide our way with regards to our project. We also had the pleasure of discussing the Escape Room and cosplay with Jeremy in the year-round Halloween section. He gave us some great information about the Escape Rooms that are offered there as well as letting us know that Mangelsen's is working towards being a provider of cosplay supplies including makeup, skin-safe adhesives, and a fast-drying mold that is better than plaster. I will definitely be returning, and would highly recommend it to anyone. It is an amazing store. read more
