I'm not big on leaving reviews but this one is totally worth it! I've wanted lasik for years but put it off (part because of money and part because fear over the procedure) but decided to check our Yelp reviews to see what is out there and found Mandel Vision. I was able to book the free consultation with ease and got to meet his totally awesome staff (shoutout to Missy) and felt so safe and comfortable that I decided to give it a go. They walked me through every step and made sure I had all the info I needed. As a follow-on to my last review... As all the issues post-PRK were popping up, a number of concerns about the post-PRK care started to come up: - I would be directed to take certain medications but if I followed-up (another appointment or question via phone call) they either couldn't remember what they had given me to take or would tell me I was supposed to be taking something else. The contradictions were concerning - I certainly don't expect perfect memory recall but I do expect good recordkeeping and a concrete plan of action - Dr Mandel insinuated I was exaggerating my symptoms. I'm not sure why I would make a big deal out of nothing Ultimately, I lost faith in their ability to provide me proper care so I've been going to a different ophthalmologist. This doctor seems to have me on the right course although there is still some ways to go. Some observations: - At the new practice, the instruments/machines/technology seem to be better and potentially more precise. - Some odd inconsistencies - at Mandel Vision, I kept being told I had 20/15 vision on the chart but when I went to this new practice, I couldn't see the 20/15 line. I could see the 20/20 line but I find it odd when that disparity exists - I was told at the new practice that I have slight astigmatism - they showed me my imaging and pointed to some blue coloring in a bowtie pattern. This didn't show up at Mandel Vision. My new doctor said this is probably causing some of the starbursts/vision distortions. read more

As someone with a plethora of eye problems, I always thought my eyes were too complex for Lasik. I had a few consultations at other lasik centers, but I still didn't feel confident that I could trust anyone to manage my eyesight--especially because I was never able to meet the surgeon during any of these consultations. I was referred to Dr. Mandel by a friend, and immediately felt so much confidence in his knowledge and skills. He addressed my high nearsightedness, high astigmatism, cup/disk ratio, and dry eye, and answered all questions. He assured me that I was a good candidate, and if I wasn't, he would turn me away. He turns away around 20% of people he sees! The procedure itself was only 10 minutes total. While it wasn't an easy procedure, Dr. Mandel and the surgical technician were so calm and light hearted, that I felt completely at ease. I did not use any premedication for anxiety, but they do offer this option. The next day, I was seeing 20/20! I had some minor stinging, hazing and halos, and light sensitivity. I was assured this is normal during my 1 day post op appointment. Also, I was already more comfortable than when I wear my monthly Toric XR contacts, so I truly have no complaints. I am now one week post-op, seeing 20/20 and my vision becomes clearer every day. My only regret is that I didn't find Dr. Mandel sooner! read more

I got my PRK surgery on 7/8/2019, and I have to say Dr. Mandel and his team are the best even compared to all doctors I had ever met in my life for now! The consultation is free and been very careful in a super organized way, after those complicated examinations, doctor Mandel came to see me. He showed and explained to my own cornea information very specifically and patiently, and I was very happy to know that I was the candidate for both PRK & Lasik. However, since I did lots of research before I determined to have this surgery, I chose PRK as I feel it's the safest way for my cornea and I have plenty of time to get recovered. Then, Missy gave me a super clear instructions to let me know what I should do before the surgery so that I can have fully prepared. On the surgery day, I brought my favorite toy bear from Craftsolic to the office since it also can help with pressure and nervous relief. I was relaxed since everyone in the office treated me very well and had great sense of humor. (They told me would give me a teddy bear if I didn't bring mine lol) A lady and Dr. Mandel both came to examine my eyes before the surgery, and I was very reassured during the surgery since they told me the specific procedure step by step in a super skilled way and the surgery went very well. I'd worn glasses for distance vison for years, but recently I started needing reading glasses too. Rather than carry around 2 sets of glasses, I decided to have my distance vision corrected. I just left Dr. Mandel's for my 4 week post op appointment. My vision on both eyes is better than 20/20 and still improving. I started out with -5.50 in the left eye with astigmatism and -5.25 in my right eye. While I was a candidate for both lasik and PRK, I chose PRK as the long term benefits and safety of the cornea Integrity outweighed the longer healing time. The day after surgery, I was able to return to work. Granted my font was zoomed in super big, I had no real discomfort or problems working after surgery. The only day that I had trouble opening my eyes was the morning of day 3 post op. However after resting my eyes that morning, I was able to complete some work in the afternoon. My vision definitely fluctuated the last 4 weeks, which was all normal. There were some days where my vision was super clear and some days where I could barely see at all but throughout my recovery, the entire team at Mandel Vision reassured me that this was all normal. Another happy customer! I got PRK with Dr. Mandel just before COVID. From the start, I was impressed by the professionalism amongst the staff. Everyone is super patient, helpful, and willing to help. Dr. Mandel is the only surgeon in this practice, so you see him EVERYTIME, not one of his assistants or junior partners...this was super important to me. He also does a very thorough job of screening candidates (he rejects something like 20% of patients for surgery), unlike some "lasik mills," whose only objective is to make money off you! Yes, he is a little more expensive, but these are your eyes people. The timeline is as follows: Preop appointment/testing -- schedule surgery --- surgery -- post op day 1 appt --- 1 month appt -- 3 month appt. These are all included in your fee. For the first year, you can continue to have appointments as needed, and any surgical adjustments are included (very few end up needing this). Regarding the PRK itself...life changing...I was a -6 before surgery, so basically blind. My vision now is better than what I had with glasses. The waves of the ocean, the snow flakes falling onto bright green leaves, all seem so vibrant to me now. It took about 2-3 months for my vision to become perfect. I do occasionally have dry eyes and light sensitivity, but these are minor nuisances that do not affect my quality of life. I was so nervous for years to get this surgery, but so glad I did it. Both my husband and I had PRK done by Dr. Mandel and couldn't be happier. I had 20/25 vision within the first week. My husband is a surgeon himself, so he was hesitant about any of the vision correction procedures as his eyesight and career is at stake. I got Lasik done on 7/13 with Dr. Mandel and I'm so glad I did! I went from being dependent on contacts and glasses for over 17 years to seeing 20/15 within a day of the procedure. Hats off to Karem for a thorough and pleasant consultation/scheduling experience and for being a great trusted advisor throughout the process :). What stood out to me during the consultation was Dr. Mandel walked me through the actual scans they'd done to give me a high-level explanation of what went into determining my candidacy - this wasn't my experience at other Lasik centers (though your mileage may vary). I had terrible eyes, -8 and -9 diopters. I have been wearing contacts since 6th grade. I am now 53 years old, sick and tired of dry contact lenses, and finally decided to take the plunge. Dr Mandel and his staff (Missy was great) really took the time to explain what they proposed to do, how they would do it, and what I could expect. They exuded confidence and competence, I was in. I rented a nearby air-bnb for the day of the surgery to make a "fun" day out of it. Surgery day - another set of tests, and a procedure that took what seems like no time at all. Blurred vision as I left to go rest, some pain/burning that night, but I slept like a baby. The next morning, miraculously, I could see without aid. Surgery was on a Thursday (I think). I asked when I could return to regular activities, " tomorrow" they said. "I have a hockey game on Monday, you sure?". I love my experience with Mandel Vision. I visited 2 other Lasik clinics and did thorough research. A lot of people recommended Dr Mandel, so I decided to schedule my free consultation. What made me want to visit was: credentials of DR Mandel, latest tech (iDesign Refractive Studio), recommendations. During consultation I was warmly welcomed by Missy which took measurements of my eyes and my vision. Once I had consultation with DR Mandel, I knew that he will be my laser eye surgeon. He answered all my questions, and on top of that he added some information that I did not ask but should. He measured my eyes again, checked for dryness and gave me list of both pros and cons of Lasik and PRK. He said that I was a candidate for both PRK and Lasik; decision was only up to me which surgery I would choose. I ultimately chose PRK, because it was a safer procedure for me, since my eyes were always a little dry. On the day of the procedure I had my eyes measurements taken again to make sure that my prescription is accurate and did not change (even after 3 weeks!). Entire procedure probably took less than 10 minutes. I was advised of every step that was performed and how it would feel. Immediately after surgery my vision was greatly improved, and I was told that it will improve even more! I am literally seeing 2020 in 2020 thanks to Dr. Mandel and his wonderful team. Everyone is so chill and answered all my (probably) ridiculous questions. I was at -3.75 and had an astigmatism before getting lasik surgery. It was done about 3 weeks ago and now I only use eyedrops when needed and for extra assurance, an eye ointment before bed. I really liked that I was given all the information before making my decision to get lasik and how specific my instructions were prior to surgery. Everything was a bit blurry after the procedure but after I went home and napped for a bit I woke up and was able to see a clear family portrait from ACROSS the room. The experience was insane. Taking care of the eyes post surgery was challenging as you have to be careful, I use cotton balls to clean around and Q-tips for my eyelashes. My eyes still have red spots but are healing nicely and everyday I see more and more of the whites. This is all to say that my recovery is normal/going well and things get better everyday. read more

It almost feels redundant to add to these hundreds of positive reviews, but I've also had a great experience with Dr. Mandel and his team. I had a smooth consultation, was treated with care and respect by the team and after being confirmed a viable candidate, I went ahead and scheduled my session for a couple of weeks into the future. There was a discount if you book your appointment immediately after your consultation-- luckily I was already planning to book my appointment, so happily accepted the immediate discount. I won't lie, the procedure itself is very uncomfortable and not pleasant BUT I also feel like that's the nature of having your eyeballs worked on. Based on the expertise and professionalism of the office, I would guess that my experience at Dr. Mandel was more comfortable than most of his competitors. They really do everything that they can to make the experience as easy as possible and set your expectations appropriately. The surgery is over very very quickly (less than ten minutes), so is completely tolerable even for the squeamish. Do you have poor eyesight and are tired of wearing glasses/contact lenses? That was me 7 days ago and now I'm seeing better than 20/20! I was initially really nervous, but Dr. Mandel and his team are so friendly/professional and do a terrific job answering any questions. The entire process was so well organized with email communication, easy scheduling, clear instructions pre/post-op, and short wait time. I cannot recommend Dr. Mandel and his team highly enough! I had Lasik surgery with Dr. Mandel in March 2019. From the pre-surgery consultation to the post-op check-ins, the entire experience was great. Prior to meeting with Dr. Mandel, I went for a consultation at with one other doctor. While I'm sure the other doctor would have been fine, there was no comparison once I met with Dr. Mandel. He and his team were all extremely pleasant, knowledgeable and thorough through the entire process. The surgery itself isn't the most pleasant experience, but Dr. Mandel fully preps you with what to expect and makes himself available to answer any questions before and after surgery. The night after surgery, Dr. Mandel even called me to see how I was feeling and he had me come in the next few days following surgery to check on my progress. It's clear that he truly cares about his patients. It's been almost 5 months since my surgery and I'm still amazed by the results. I found Dr. Mandel through Yelp and was amazed at how many positive reviews he had. Googling his name resulted in countless more high star reviews on other sites. This intrigued me and I set up a consultation. The consultation was thorough and everyone I interacted with was helpful and able to answer what questions I did have. Part of the consultation is having your pupils dilated and I found that the drops they used to do this caused my pupils to stay larger longer than when I've gone through this at the optometrist, so keep this in mind if you're making plans or hoping to head back to a computer screen afterwards. The end of the consultation I met Dr. Mandel and he went over the results of the tests performed on my eyes. His bedside manner was excellent and I felt comfortable talking with him about my concerns. He explained to me that I was a candidate for either LASIK or PRK. The decision about which surgery to go with was up to what I thought would make the most sense for me. I left the office with literature on both procedures and a mission to do some more research. I read through the information from Dr. Mandel's office, looked online (which lead me down the rabbit hole) and joined the LASIK complications group on facebook. I weighed out the pros and cons of the surgery and ultimately decided that with my vision I was willing to risk having dry eyes and many other risks you can find online or in the documentation from Dr. Mandel. I researched the Dr. Mandel and found he does research and has presented on the risks of laser eye surgery. Learning this information was reassuring because I realized Dr. Mandel is a great doctor and takes pride in what he does. He doesn't seem to be doing this for the money but instead doing it to help people and to have an outstanding career in Ophthalmology. The day of the surgery I was nervous and excited. I brought my husband with me and it was nice to have company to talk since you are told to avoid using your eyes to read. The surgery itself went by relatively quickly and hearing Dr. Mandel and his assistant chat and talk with me was a welcome distraction. I went home, slept for the entire afternoon and woke up seeing without glasses or contact for the first time in 20 years! I had the surgery just over a week ago and I couldn't be happier. I now have 20/20 vision and can hardly believe my eyes - couldn't resist that bad joke. Before the surgery I was -9.0 diopter in both eyes with an astigmatism. This surgery is not for everyone - some people that work at the office wear glasses because they are not candidates, so it if you are curious like I was get the consultation. I wish you all the best in doing your research and hope you make the best decision for you.
