And the most amazing part is that my daughter goes to class excited and comes out of class just beaming with joy. The price is excellent compared to the other options we've tried as well.

On her first day, she reported to me that the jazz teacher (Isabela) did not allow the students to take bathroom breaks. She was also unnecessarily mean and said to one of the students she didn't care that they were tired. I wrote an e-mail addressing my concerns, and for some odd reason this same teacher was extra rude to my daughter the next day. She made my daughter do extra warm up reps although my daughter said her back was hurting from practice the day prior. At some point during class, she grabbed my daughter's arm very harshly. All the students in that class agreed that this teacher was unfair and unkind. My daughter refused to go back to dance camp and we had 2 days left of paid camp. Management refused to reimburse me and made excuses for this type of abusive/unprofessional behavior for this particular teacher. All other staff members were very nice. I can make a bigger deal about this matter by filing a complaint with the BBB or even take them to civil court. But I've decided to write my first review on Yelp just to forewarn other parents.

The kids feel proud of their accomplishment. For me, however, this is overshadowed by the very strict policies. You pay for the entire year up front, so you want to make sure your kid will want to do the entire year. The first year we went here, this worked out OK. However, the second year my 7 yr old was not enjoying the class at all--to the point she would leave the class early crying. We were a couple months in at this point (but before winter break or the beginning of performance dance practices). We were told that we could leave the class but would not be entitled to any refund of the tuition (more than half the year at that point). We were also not allowed to try out another class to see if we could find one my child would like better. I felt this was extraordinarily rigid for a 7 year old. To not even work with a family to try and find a better fit in dance class says to me they are not concerned with the dancer's experience. Our only options were to eat the half year tuition, or force our child to continue a class she really did not like. Perhaps this policy is OK for older kids who know what activities they like, but for younger children I find it inappropriate. Parents should also be aware that the kids are required to wear specific clothing to all practices, so there is an additional cost as you need to order specific dance leotards, tights, shoes, etc.

This year (2011) the theme was "Around the World." The 90 minute show had 33 numbers running 3 minutes or less. The teachers always do a great job of teaching, creating the choreography, selecting the beautiful costumes, & letting the kids shine. Each year the best performances vary. 3 years ago, 3 young men tap dancers were just phenomenal. This year the ballet & modern/contemporary numbers were my favorites. A tall angular young man was especially wonderful to watch...smooth, graceful, strong, rhythmic...better than many professionals I have seen! I am often surprised by the abilities of children who do not have traditional willowy dancer shapes. This year the bigger girls really excelled in the modern & ballet numbers. Their technique, movement, & energy were a pleasure to watch. The younger children are a treat. They often miss something & their reactions are so cute & funny. This year when another dancer stood on her spot on the stage 1 little girl gently pushed the other toward her proper spot, pointed, & mouthed..."you go there!" The price was reasonable...Less than $30 for middle range seats. Much less than what we last paid for a seat at the opera.

An absolutely fantastic teacher! My husband and I were able to sign up for two private lessons and…read morewe learned SO much. It was a great experience! Jen is a great teacher, very kind and fun. She followed the pace we learned at and gave us tips on our technique, which was incredibly helpful (and not something you can get from a youtube video!) She's very encouraging, but isn't afraid to point out the things you should work on. The private lessons are in a bank parking lot, which sounds a little strange but it was actually PERFECT. The bank is closed by then, and the parking lot is gated, so no cars. There are lights when it gets darker. AND the lines for the parking spaces are actually a super useful tool for making sure you're staying in the right position while learning. Plus it's outdoors for Covid safety, and everyone was fully masked the whole time. I highly recommend taking at least one private lesson with Jen to get one-on-one advice! She also teaches at some free public events (Which she made sure we knew about, and encouraged us to go to). The ONLY reason we aren't going to be taking a LOT more lessons with Jen is we're moving across the country. I can't recommend her enough!

Bonus: it was also a great way to get people mixing, since everyone had a chance to practice dancing with many different partners around the circle. In addition to the great dance lesson, Hep Jen also DJ'd for our reception, playing just the right blend of jazz and swing to keep things festive. She also handled all the announcements (no easy task, as we were still figuring out what to announce up until the morning of the wedding) and the open-mike toasts all with grace and good-naturedness. She inspired my three and a half year old nephew to clear the floor with his breakdancing, and created the soundtrack for many happy conversations. I can't say enough good things about her. I've taken several swing lessons from her over the years, either at lindy in the park, Cat's Corner, and elsewhere. Her talent in teaching always evident and her genuine enthusiasm is super contagious.

(teacher was Tianne Frias) On the first lesson we learned new difficult movement and we never repeated it after that! On the next lesson we learned new movement and it was easier then previous. On the third lesson we did the same - it was boring for all people except those who arrived their first time. And on the last lesson we had another teacher because our teacher need to be away. I saw that she does not have a plan absolutely. She just show us something what pushed in her head. She forget about what we learn on the previous lesson. Also, her descriptions were not really good though I am experienced enough and have never had a problem with repeating movements after the teacher. I also do not like DanceSF site because they send us so many spam about their courses, buying their disks and so on. And, as I understand, DanceSF is not actually a school. Looks like it's just a common site where info about different teachers in different places is collected (just my opinion). Now I am dancing in the Pick school and I am really happy about teachers and their lessons.

Her classes are social, laid back and you will have a blast. I went alone, no need to bring a partner-you'll meet a lot of people there. It's cool too bc people often go out together after meeting in her class. I started with her in the summer of 2005 and I haven't stopped dancing. 5 nights a weeks to be exact. Okay, you don't have to follow in my footsteps but whatever you choose to do, you'll have fun! Her classes are not as large as Evan's. I prefer smaller classes, more personal that way. Go to her classes. You won't be disappointed. (btw, her name is pronounced Tee-Yawn-Nee, but say it fast and stress the 2nd syllable. Or I suppose you could just ask her:)

Skipping with hands on waist, skipping sideways, skipping while holding the hands of another child who is also skipping. I'm not exaggerating. I'll compare this to our time at Tutu School which taught things like actual ballet positions and real dancing. Tutu School's classes are smaller in size with more attention on the child. Parents are allowed to come and watch their children learn. It's delightful. Both schools have recitals at the Herbst Theater, but only Miss Tilly's expects you to stay and watch all the other performances by classes your child is not a part of. Then at the end of the whole thing, they call the kids back up on stage to sing a commercial for Miss Tilly's. I'm not joking, it's a song about Miss Tilly's. With Tutu School, each child gets their own solo moment where they stand center stage and do their own dance. With Miss Tilly's there are too many kids to do that because it is already TWO HOURS of watching random kids skip. The only good thing I can say about Miss Tilly's is they have a live pianist who's wonderful.
