Perhaps, my inner gay man saw a spark in Sexitude. Also, it's offered as a ClassPass option. So, on a Sunday morning at 11AM, you can get yourself to church, or hang out with Darcy "Baby D." Sexitude offers different dance routines. For a month, they will work on one dance routine, and it should change month to month. I am not really a big dancer. It is not my passion, but I can do some basic moves and have a basic grasp of dancing. Like side-step, turn around, point your toe, and SHIMMY like Jimmy. If you have done this before, it won't be foreign and you can get going with the group. I was very out of step. I did enjoy the gay factor and the gay guys are cute and fun to watch. They are really into the dancing. Darcy leads a nightclub in SOMA as well. If you are into basic dancing for exercise, you would like Sexitude. I actually have an aversion (well...deep down it's a strong affinity) to mirrors…read more Seriously. Since I was a kid I've been making an uber bizarre mirror face- whenever my reflection is presented before me. It's a weird mix of Blue Steel meets Top Model. I can't help but give face to any and every mirror that I come in contact with. It got so bad during middle school and high school that I never got any work done when I was in my room. I would sit vainly in front of my bedroom mirror and just stare at myself. Stare at myself doing work. Stare at myself no longer doing work. Stare at myself dancing instead of work....the list goes on. My parents finally decided an intervention was in order and promptly removed my massive bureau mirror from my room. A wave of relief overwhelmed me - once that big dominant mirror was no longer a profound presence in my room. I became about 12 percent more productive that day (though all of my CDs were promptly used as substitutes and till today most of my CD collection is smeared with makeup and finger stains...le sigh). And.... so it's a strange thing for me to actually celebrate and crave mirrors such as the ones that Mobu boasts. I've taken two hula-hoop lessons here and the large expansive mirrors which line this intimate studio have been key players in helping me conquer or at least try to tackle difficult hula-hoop moves. When this studio is not in use - you can rent it out for a fairly nominal fee - and it is beyond worth it. It is beyond what's up to have a darling studio where you can drop a hula-hoop loudly on the ground and no one cares (sorry below neighbors). It is beyond what's up to have a space - where you can bust out some bumpin tunes as the hula-hoop awkwardly bumps across your shoulders. It is beyond what's up to have a place where you can go to learn a skill with personal one-on-one training. Thank you Mobu for existing. Thank you Mobu for having mirrors and allowing me to enjoy them oh so briefly. Trust.

The class was fun & she was a really great teacher. Since the class was small, there was more personalized attention. The only thing I don't like was the switching partners. I don't feel at all comfortable dancing with any other person other than my boyfriend. Plus, there was this one guy who I danced with who talked about how he's been going for awhile & knows everything, but he wasn't doing some stuff correctly & he was very forceful which kinda scared me. I was so not wanting to dance with him when I had to dance with him during the several times of switching partners. :(

She excels at all things relating to teaching: technique, patience, clear instruction, and also cultivating a good class environment where everybody feels empowered to participate and give it their all. No judgment, except for Liezl's gentle and important corrections to make sure you're doing things right! If you're wary of toxic environments...this is definitely the opposite! Even when I've had a bad week and feel very glum, I always walk out of class with a sense of accomplishment and joy. I used to dance as a child, but only in rather unsavory environments (think not getting a ton of attention from teachers because your classmates were going to the Olympics and using dance as a supplement, that kind of thing). Then, college dance clubs were even more competitive to join! Thankfully, I found Terpsichora Ballet. We learn Vagonova technique, which focuses on building the strength and fundamentals necessary to dance in a beautiful, expressive, and safe manner. This was very important to me as an adult who's had multiple injuries in the past (stress fractures, knee strains, etc.) SF is so lucky to have Liezl and Terps. I've tried a few studios and this is definitely the best one! Liezl's students love her and she is in high demand, so make sure to keep an eye on the website so you can sign up on time before workshops sell out! I'm only halfway through Adult Beginning 1 and can already feel myself getting so much more knowledgeable and strong while dancing.

She makes a stream of precise suggestions for improvement tailored to each person present. The Vaganova method is highly detailed and the classes are built to ensure the foundations are completely in place. It is not 100% clear to me what it is about Ms. Liezl's classes that makes them so good and so inspiring. Partly I see a combination of a nicely lit and simple space, the alignment of the barres (which makes it easy to see how others are dancing and learn from what they are doing, including their mistakes), the great atmosphere emanating from the dancers (there are a lot of genuinely nice people who want to develop, including those who already dance well). But I believe a lot of this orchestrated magic comes directly from Ms. Liezl herself. She is the real deal: fully present and moved by the music, the art, and the teaching she is doing. She sees the whole and all the parts. She analyzes fully while deeply feeling and expressing. This is also evident by how she talks about parts of well known ballets and current local ballet performances. I feel completely nourished whenever I take her classes, possibly because I just took part in an excellent and fully considered experience.

The instructor did not even introduce herself to the new students or the parents. I guess the studio must be doing well with enrollment because our instructor seemed quite apathetic to forging a connection with us or the new students. The instructor's tone was harsh and severe throughout the entire class. She also seemed a bit stressed and it was quite visible and audible in the way she interacted with the class. As a former ballet dancer myself, I understand the discipline, the critique, the perfection, etc that comes with learning ballet. I did appreciate the structure, the intro to a little bit of technique, etc but I would have liked to see a more warm/kind way to introduce the youngest budding dancers to ballet. My 3 y/o follows instruction well. She was quite excited and happy to try the class. It's in her nature to follow the rules and do a good job. She said she "tried her best, and it was fun but the teacher was mean" so we'll continue searching for the right fit!

A friend invited me to take a beginner pole class together over the weekend at Songbird. I'd taken…read morea few other beginner pole classes for fun before at various studios in NorCal and SoCal, but it'd been at least two years since my last class. I was excited to check out this studio, as I always like varying my fitness routine and trying something new. I arrived a bit before my friend and spent an embarrassing amount of time searching for the entrance, but I eventually found my way. The instructor, Kriya, was very welcoming, and the atmosphere felt friendly and inviting. Once class began, we spent a solid chunk of time warming up and stretching. Then Kriya led us through a variety of moves, some of which I'd seen before, and a short choreography routine at the end. I definitely felt a bit rusty on the pole, but I was happy to see that I've gotten stronger since the last time I took a pole class, as climbing the pole felt almost effortless. I'm really happy my friend suggested taking a class here together, and I look forward to popping in again as my schedule allows.
