Joining Maia was easy, and I have found the staff to be responsive, compassionate, kind and communicative. I had an initial appointment, some lab work and quickly got a plan from Dr. Heather. She is a terrific listener and she takes the time and space to really understand me and my situation. Her follow up communication is quick and excellent. The office has convenient appointments and thorough communication. The nurse is kind and competent. This practice saw my husband and when we recently had our first bout of Covid as well. I had a long list of health questions and possible ailments and she patiently listened to me and took the time to thoughtfully discuss everything I brought up. At one point she even pulled out a physician's encyclopedia-type book and showed me illustrations about a skin condition I've been struggling with. I left feeling empowered and had a newfound respect for medical professionals. After a trip to Belize, I went to urgent care twice and was ultimately hospitalized for a little bug bite on my back. I had half a dozen doctors look at the bite, and every one of them had a different prognosis. When I finally went to Dr. Charles to follow up after the hospital visit, she took one look at my bug bite and immediately knew what the culprit was. I was furious at the other docs that didn't listen when I told them I'd gone to Belize and had numerous mosquito bites. One of them even suggested it was an ingrown hair (highly unlikely and borderline insulting). I was so impressed that Dr. Charles immediately knew I had a botfly and a week later I was healthy, bug-free, and once again awestruck by her knowledge. Last but not least, Dr. Charles always remembers me as if we're good friends, recalling details of my personal life and asking me how I've been since we last met. It's always unnerving to go to the doctor's office... unless Dr. Charles is your doctor.

She has always been very responsive to my panicked calls (when is it not an urgent call, when your tiny baby is sick, even if it's "normal"?) She has also welcomed my questions/hesitations when it comes to some Western medicine norms, and she always offers holistic and research-based advice/thoughts/diagnoses. She even met me on a Saturday (not office hours) to give my girl the last of her three-day antibiotic shots for an ugly ear infection. Personally, she diagnosed and has helped treat issues I've had for years -- that a counselor, midwife, dermatologist, and naturopath didn't catch. While it is a younger and smaller practice, I'm definitely willing to overlook a less-than-friendly receptionist who answered the phone a few times or confusion with paperwork. The care and professionalism we've received when it really counts is invaluable to me. Update (Feb 2018): she no longer has a frazzled receptionist. Leslie is always kind, warm, and welcoming! :)

Yet it was a complete let down from the moment I called to make an appointment. It was hard to get in, the woman on the phone was rude and not helpful and then my appointment was not scheduled correctly. Dr. Shelly was not any more impressive. Unfortunately, she was very impersonal, did offer a natural and holistic approach I was looking for and rushed me out of her office. I'll keep looking for someone that will offer me more than 15 minutes of their time. I wasted a $30 copay on 15 useless minutes.

I was directed to leave a message for the manager, who was incredibly rude and unprofessional when she returned my call. Instead of helping resolve the issue, she informed me that my father's upcoming appointment would be canceled since he was "out of network," and placed all the blame on the intake department. Very disappointing experience overall -- poor communication, lack of accountability, and no compassion for patients or their families. I would not recommend trusting this facility with your loved one's care.

My husband & I have been trying to put together a team of OB/doula/midwife for the home birth of our first baby. We found an amazing Ethiopian doula here in Denver at around 8 weeks & finally found a midwife we adore a few weeks ago. In between us meeting and hiring our doula & midwife, we scheduled an OB appointment, you know, just to see who all is out there. We scheduled an appointment with an OBGYN who I had seen was recommended in several FB groups for parents wanting black birthing professionals. The only red flag was that a few ppl said that the doctor was very judgmental...still excited for the appointment nonetheless. She was so booked up that we only got to see her at our 13 week visit because someone canceled. When I tell you that THAT was the worst doctor experience of my life. First off, she was dismissive of our questions & commentary. Her phone kept ringing, at least 3 times during the appointment & she answered it each time without so much as an excuse me. She rushed thru the ultrasound so we couldn't get a clear picture of the baby. MIND YOU, Before going into our appointment, I already knew not to share that we were planning a home birth. First because I've worked in a hospital before & second, that red flag I mentioned from earlier. My husband made the mistake of asking if we should still see her AND our midwife if we're planning a home birth. BAYBEH, she went left. Talking down on home births & how she'd never recommend anyone give birth at home & how she'd be so pissed if her husband or any of her kids even suggested it. Didn't give any facts, stats, or statistics, just her personal take on home births. Big turn off for me. Then she locked eyes with me & goes "I'd flip if my husband even suggested a home birth" as if to shift the blame to my husband & make him out to be some kind of caveman forcing me to birth at home. THEN to add insult to injury, we were supposed to do genetic testing that day. They even made SURE that I spent an hour plus on the phone with insurance to make sure the test was covered. Just for them to send us to the wrong lab where we waited for 40 minutes before they called us to come back to the office. The nurse was very sweet, but she stuck me 4 times, spilled some of my blood. JUST for us to receive an email a week later saying we needed to come in for a redraw because there wasn't enough blood sample. Long story short, my husband wouldn't start the car & leave after until I cried & vented cuz he knew how pissed I was. Thankfully, never going back.
