A rather intimate shop with a downtown street view, plenty of cool decor. Ellie cut my hair and did a very good job, patiently giving me suggestions on my particular situation (textured crew cut for thinning AND receding hair). I walked out of there looking great and feeling great! Both her, John the owner, and even the other men getting their cuts provided great conversation and restaurant recommendations. The cut was $35, plus $20 for a little canister of Upper Cut styling powder. At the nexus of cost, service, vibe, and location, this place is solid.

I wasn't exactly happy about paying $40 just to get a crappy fade fixed, but I didn't have many other choices. So I came here and Moe gave me a cut that I must say, was pretty damn good. He cut the hell out of my hair (in a *good* way) and turned the shitty mid-fade into a beautiful high fade. He made it look good. It was cut way too short, much shorter than I requested and I didn't ask in some vague esoteric way that was questionable, but showed a specific reference image with the length of bangs hitting the cheekbones if not a bit more. Isaac does the cut without talking at all or really asking questions and even though I showed the reference image and he took a picture of that image to look at, he still proceeded to cut my bangs to my brow bone at most. I pretended to like it, but I felt ugly and awful about it and I know I'm going to keep feeling this way for at least the two months it takes to even get to semblance of what I wanted. If this is what I wanted I guess it would be acceptable, but this is very much not what I wanted as I had a clear image that he looked at multiple times and yet he cut my hair much shorter than I wanted. A bad haircut is subjective, but it becomes objectively bad when it's comparing the length of what I wanted to what I received. If you want no communication, no talking just sitting in silence, a stylist that will look at images of what you want and completely ignore it to do something else, and a haircut that makes you look up supplements for hair growth, then Isaac is a great stylist for you and this is the perfect salon to go to. I tried to have grace once, but this is completely unacceptable.

I also love that I get to schedule my hair appointments online with him instead of having to call to make an appointments, I cannot overstate the convenience factor. The salon is located in the third ward and beautifully decorated, industrial style. They also use Apple Pay. The parking is on the street which can be a bit of a pain but I can generally find street parking within a block's walking distance. I did take a friend here for a pedicure once and I will say that maybe it was the day or tight timing, but it felt a bit rushed and unfriendly, which is a bit unfortunate. I had had a bad experience previously with another stylist who razored my ends to hell, and Sarah said that we would work together to get my hair back to where it should be. And my cut was exactly what I wanted even though I had to go a bit shorter than I would have liked (to get rid of the bad razoring). Sarah and I talked through everything to try to determine what was best for me and my hair - I was a little nervous seeing someone new, but she was very patient with me and took the time that was necessary to make sure I was happy with everything. The brand of hair products that SF carries is amazing. Similar to Aveda, in that they're natural and mostly organic, but they do so much more for my hair than Aveda ever could (and one of the shampoo/conditioner types smells like Thin Mints. THIN MINTS, people). I should probably mention that everyone at SF is super friendly, and that I've always had good interactions with everyone at the salon. I'm glad I made the switch!

I hope all of you appreciate that I would have walked out if not for the experience and a story to tell. I struggled with how to frame this review. Part of me wanted to to protect other employees at the location by creating a new busness in the same location under the indivdual stylist's name, but if she gets it together I'd rather my review not follow her. On the other hand, I felt it unfair to punish other stylists in the same salon for one person. In the end, I decided that the entire salon needs to be called out. There is no confusion as to what is going on here: all of the other stylists watched this transpire and did nothing to defend their customer; I exchanged several knowing glances with others in the room. If the owner isn't aware of the situation, shame on her. More disturbing than the razor work, which actually came out great despite the conditions, were the thought processes going on and the lack of filter between brain and mouth. After asking what I did for work, she proceeded to mock the entire industry. She also made it known that she lives in a certain part of town among a certain type of people, and that somehow her willingness to live in such conditions made her a really great human being, when merely saying that sentence indicated delusion. She even mocked the most fragile and beautiful subset of our society, wealthy orthinologists. The appointment began about 10 minutes late and took about an hour, which I've never experienced anywhere. The website lists their men's haircuts as $25-40 and $40 for a new male client, which I was, but at checkout time it came in at $45 with no explanation. All that being said, I have some wild hair and am not particularly attracted to my own image, but I caught myself getting lost in the mirror, which never happened after anywhere else. If you can tolerate it here, it's some nice work. I picked this place because they have a perfect 5-star rating. Upon further review, the most recent was posted on 7/18/2012. Did everyone figure it out and not share? Time for a reset... To make a long story short, I spent the last year growing my hair in and letting salons do their best. KRS Hair Studio - Riverwest, 2. Robert Laurence - Shorewood, 3. The Cutting Group - Riverwest, 4. Stone Fox Salon - Murray Hill, 5. Grum - Murray Hill, 6. M Salon - Walker's Point. Peace.
