Amazing amount of everything gem and mineral related. We spent an hour getting lost in it all. My niece selected an intact geode and the staff kindly sawed it open for her while we watched through the ship window. We knocked out a ton of stay home prizes for friends who are watching our pets this week. Highly knowledgeable staff answered all of our queries and the prices are truly great. read more

I liked the old location better but the new location is still very large. For me it can be a hit or miss in terms of them having a fossil I'd want. I just need to be at the right place at the right time for just the right pieces. But they have a huge inventory, a real plus. read more

A friend and I recently went out to Mama's Minerals to see the ropes of beautiful gemstones. They have some really lovely things. Pricey, but I think they are worth what they are asking, as the quality is very good. This is a great place for the whole family to go, I think. Kids will enjoy the geode displays and anyone who likes to make jewelry will really enjoy their gemstones. It's a great place to shop in Old Town! Without fail, we come here every ABQ trip. Even though its mostly the same products they offer, its always cool to see all these various formations, shiny or dull. I always love seeing the new, large displays that sell for over $4,000 typically. One day, my husband will go bankrupt for one of these magnificent fish fossils. Very clean and professional looking store. Rocks organized by rock types, some on glass displayes and some piped up in baskets. They have a lil nook in the store for all their himalayan lamps that are always really cool to sit and look at. If youre looking for rock tools, they got a great assortment too. If you need books, theres a whole selection they offer. Theres even a lil kiddie area to play in so you can go about the store while they play. It never disappoints to just walk into the store and look at their beautiful rock or fossil diaplays. Theres always something new and different from what you would find in most rock stores. I used to like this place for jewelry supplies until they moved to the new location. I wanted to buy jump rings, which used to be sold by the bag for a couple of dollars but now are $1.75 a piece! This is a ridiculous price. They also used to have a better selection of beads. I'm thinking the prices are going up to pay for the beautiful building. Was here for the Balloon Fiesta and found that this place was really over priced for the quality of their inventory. There are other shops in the city that have better customer service, quality and prices. I did purchase a few things here and was a little irritated that they just threw them in a bag with no care. I didn't spend a crazy amount of money but I found that other shops in the area were much more careful with how they baggged my purchases. read more

When I went into Mama's Minerals I had this bigger lady following me around the whole time I was there, Which made me EXTREMELY uncomfortable, I know it's because I'm a man of color which is very upsetting that they would hire a person like this! I was here about 6 or 7 years ago, and found the prices reasonable and the quality of fossils and minerals pretty good. decided to drop by this trip and was disappointed. It is my opinion that there were few interesting and rare minerals, the quality of most were strictly average to poor. The variety and quantity of fossils was poor and, in some cases, ridiculously overpriced. For instance, I looked at the 20 or 30 megalodon teeth on display. They were about the worst specimens I've seen. I asked the price of a medium size, mediocre tooth, and was shocked to see it priced at $500. By comparison, a similar specimen on Ebay would cost probably less than $100. The few pieces of petrified wood were overpriced and poor specimens. It looks to me, in my opinion, what Mama's is doing is buying the poorest quality specimens at cheap prices and selling them for prices of high quality, Interesting specimens. A large proportion of what is for sale is the same stuff sold in truck stops and 'trinket' shops that are found along the highway. My opinion is that before you buy anything at Mama's, like a piece of petrified wood, fossil, or even piece of garden variety, polished mineral, you should check on Ebay for both quality and price. As I said, my negative comments are my opinions and are based on my recent visit to Mama's. read more

OK so this is a pretty fun store! Now I'm no geologist or anything so when asking for help I truly thought I'd be getting the correct product LOL. So we bought a geode for our kids thinking this would be so much fun to crack open... After 30 minutes of trying to crack open a geode we realized this is not a geode . I'm a little disappointed that we were told this was a geode due to the employee helping us and handing us this rock. I tried to call but no one ever picks up the phone. read more

Massive gem/mineral/bead emporium! They even had fluorescent minerals! If you are are a collector of crystals/gemstones , love fossils or you make beaded jewelry - great place with a ton of options! They have equipment for those who gold mine and you can rent a metal detector to find treasures of your own. I was there to find cabochons and they did have a small selection of interesting cabochons for sale. The staff was nice and they really let you browse (the store is huge) and take your time enjoying everything! If you are make beaded jewelry, they have the largest selection of beads that I've seen here, all grouped by color and rows and rows. Overall, great store with beautiful crystal displays! read more

Was looking for a salt lamp to buy. Someone had recommended this place. Purchased a salt lamp from this store. They have a large array of stones and minerals there. They even have the accessories including earrings and bracelets. I want to visit here again to purchase more salt lamps as I know they are good cleansing the air and especially for relaxing. Some of the staff is friendly and some could use a little bit more training on customer service. Confession time, part I: growing up in the Mid-Atlantic, I didn't have a very close relationship to rocks. Gems were things we saw only on jewelry, and fossils ... well THEY belonged in a museum, not a place for purchase. Our landscapes were carpeted with leafy trees, wet and humid in most seasons, and rock strata were visible only on the interstate where roadcuts carved through the ancient Appalachian peaks long eroded into rounded, gently rising ridgelines. Confession time, part II: living now in northern California, I have more contact with rocks, gems, and minerals, but I tended to think about places that sold them as "crystal shops" located in places like Mt Shasta where all sorts of New Age and spiritual aids are part of the retail space real estate. So, when I visited Mama's Minerals, a short walk from the Hotel Albuquerque Old Town, I was surprised. Surprised to find fossilized crocodile skulls rather than sweetgrass incense. Surprised to see boxes and bins of uncut stones, gold panning equipment, metal detectors, geologist's hammers and chisels, and a full range of rock polishing machines. Sure, you still can find jewelry and beads and probably sticks of incense, too. But this is definitely a rock shop, not a crystal store. The points of overlap are primarily in the minerals for display, lots of amethyst, quartz, and hundreds of other precious and semi-precious stones in sizes that range for a few ounces to a couple of tons. Most impressive to the casual visitor are the high-end fossil displays, the ones that retail for $1000s or tens of $1000s, but there is almost no place your eyes can wander where you won't discover a beautifully cut gem, a glowing fluorescent surface, an ancient sea creature from the depths of geological time, or a rock of unusual hue and reflective color. Generally speaking, I prefer retail spaces that are uncluttered, with lots of negative space and a seasonal rotation of items for sale (a tough business model to make a profit, I admit). But at Mama's Minerals, the massive inventory of rocks, gems, fossils, beads, and rockhounding equipment seems to fill the space without making it look cramped or messy. Partly this is because the building is HUGE, almost of Target-esque proportion, with high ceilings and wide aisles. It feels like a museum and a gift shop combined into one. There are obviously people who come here who are experienced rockhounds or who are expertly educated in the world of fossils and gems. But you don't have to belong to these subcultures to enjoy a visit here. Maybe you'll leave with a piece of smoky quartz or a birthstone; maybe you'll spring for a trilobite cross-section for displaying in your living room or library. Either way, it's a great stop the next time you're in Old Town ABQ. read more

It was a surprise to see Mama's Mineral's had moved. But it seemed to be a change for the better, since the new location has A LOT more space than the old one, which was feeling pretty cramped. The new location is also only a short walk from Old Town (the most touristy section of ABQ). As before, the selection is broad. Mama's carries supplies, equipment and beads for jewelry makers as well as fossil hunters. It carries stones and crystals in multiple configurations, some which appeal to novices; others that appeal to collectors. They even have mineral-based furniture and lamps. So basically, if you enjoy any of the items produced by nature's 4 billion year laboratory, Mama's is worth checking out. To be crystal clear, Mama's Minerals is a shop for nearly everyone: from the jaded, to the stoners, as well as those living a sedimentary lifestyle; from people who like classic rock, to those who take life for granite. Sometimes the pricing is off too. I picked up a stone that was marked $3 and got rung up for $7 - the cashier was nice about fixing the mistake but I recommend keeping track of the prices yourself. The best place in town for pink Himalayan salt lamps! Bought several of these as Christmas gifts for family, and the selection/price was on point. The quality was better at Mama's Minerals than the lamps I saw online at various websites, but the prices were similar. Selection for the lamps run from small to large, and they showcase various shapes. This place is a dream come true for a jewelry maker, a magician, a spiritualist, a Christian or an alchemist. They have everything you could possibly be looking for or even things you might not be looking for but much needed. I recently found 2 sets of African trade beads here and after a quick parouse around the store, I also found the necessary jump rings and ear hooks to make earrings out of the 2 sets of African trade beads. The owner even worked with me and knocked a few bucks off. This place has beautiful one of a kind items and they are priced to sell!!!
