Came back to try the food this time. We ordered the Ayam Berempah, Mee Goreng, Roti Canai and Roti Pisang. The roti was really good especially since they make it fresh right there in the restaurant. No frozen supermarket version! The Ayam Berempah was very tasty with all the right amount of spices. It was better than finger licking good. Finally the Mee Goreng was pretty good too. My first taste of Malaysian cuisine, and it was love at first bite. I started off with the mee goreng; it was savory and overall flavorful. The nasi goreng was packed with garlic flavor but wasn't overwhelming to the point where you couldn't taste anything else, something I'm a fan of. The ayam goreng (fried chicken) was crispy, juicy, and flavorful-- really lived up to its menu description! And lastly, the roti planta. Omg. THIS was the star of the show. It was buttery and went PERFECTLY with the curry dips on the side. The service was quick and efficient; not the friendliest, but it was adequate. Ayam Berempah. Ayam Inlove. My birthday visit to Mamak came sans queue at 12-30 lunchtime. Things were starting well, I was expecting a horde. The place was full inside, but they still managed to find a spot for 5 of us. As we sat at our table we were waiting for our 5th so decided to order. The table next to us told us they had waited 30 minutes after ordering to get their food. They weren't too happy. 5 minutes after ordering our Roti came out. Another 10 and we had all the main dishes. Decently quick service to me. The servers were both friendly, our waitress served with a gorgeous smile and was patient whilst the oldies at the table dithered about the order. Mamak was making a good first impression on me. The Roti Telur are spesh. Roti with an egg in it, is just awesome, I don't think I want Roti any other way now, and the sauces that come with it are tasty. A touch of that Sambal and my spice senses were tingling. The Kari Kambing was delectable and had tantalising heat. It's a testament to tenderness that Mamak provide you with only a fork and a spoon; the lamb can be carved like butter with just the edge of said spoon. The Kari Ikan is super tasty too, just beware of bones as the fish still contains many. But the showstopper for me was the Ayam Berempah. The spicy fried chicken is what KFC would be in the hands of the Malays. Topped with a chili the coating is so crispy, and the chicken so tender and flavourful...I ended up having 3 pieces much to the tables dismay... It's my birthday I crowed, and everyone shut the eff up as my gluttony won the day. Sadly there was a downpoint. The satays were terrible. The beef (if that's what it was) tasted like rubber, and the chicken was dry. Getting them off the skewers was nigh impossible, and whilst the peanut sauce was superb it was unable to save the meat, even when doused in the stuff. I will absolutely come here again, but I won't make the mistake of ordering the satays. Stick to the curries and the rotis and it's 5-star. Regretting that we didn't get the Rojak. read more

I had been to the Haymarket Mamak a few times and heard there was one in Chatswood. My cousins live in the North, so we decided to order take a way on a Friday night. Parking was a bit of a nightmare so we parked in a questionable area and placed the order. It was about 7:15ish and there was already a queue, but it looked like it was moving fairly quickly. We ordered and they said it would take about 20 mins. So my cousin went to move the car and I waited. Food came out maybe 15 minutes later. We got three roti's, the lamb curry, the sambal prawns and some of the coconut rice with fried chicken and veggies. They forgot the veggies but there was plenty of food. Lamb curry and sambal prawn were spot on and so good and spicy. The fried chicken was a bit bland. The roti was delicious and everything was super filling. If you want to avoid the lines, get take a way! read more

It's located only a shortwalk from chatswood train station (just up the escalator & turn right on Railway St). One of the best places for Malaysian cuisine in Sydney. Our fave dishes: roti canai which is served with 2 types of curry sauce, mee goreng (spicy fried egg noodle), chicken satay (chicken skewer) served with peanut sauce, nasi lemak with sambal sotong (coconut rice with condiments & spicy cuttlefish), or just plain nasi lemak (coconut rice with condiments like peanuts, sambal, cucumber, fried anchovy & hard-boiled egg), and for dessert - roti tisu with vanilla ice cream. I came here, repeatedly, for one reason alone: the roti. Doesn't matter which one, you can't go wrong, all of them done well. The savory roti were light, fluffy and soft, served with two curries, and a spicy sauce. The curries here were a little too spicy for my mild palate, but delicious nevertheless. The BEST part about coming here, though? The roti kaya - dessert roti with pandan filling that is not too sweet, but just sweet enough. Unlike anything I've ever had. AMAZING and highly recommended. The roti with bananas is a good choice as well, but the pandan is unique and well worth the calories. read more

Best Malaysian ever! Having gone overseas for a while, I realised just how good the roti canai at Mamak was, and it was the first time I craved food from Australia whilst overseas. The roti canai is to die for! Fluffy, soft on the inside, flaky on the outside, comes with 3 dipping sauces, it is a must have dish. The roti tissue is another must have dessert style roti dish that comes in the shape of a giant cone, fit to be a party hat. The teh tarik is the traditional Malay drink and another must have. I just realised that everything I've listed is a must have, and I'd better stop here, because in fact, pretty much everything on the menu is a must have! Safe to say that every Mamak fan had the same thought when they first heard that a 2nd store was to open up in Chatswood - "About freaking time". And aren't they glad! Mainly glad that they don't have to queue as the biggest single complaint stemming from their first store on Ghoulburn street in the City is the never ending line out front. That awful line is indeed missing here in Chatswood or at least is way shorter even during the peak dining periods. Any compromises in the food then? Nope - none at all. The food here is just as good as the one in the city, which means the usual adjectives apply: cheap, satisfying, quick and delicious malaysian cuisine. My pick of the dishes have to be the Roti - Sweet or Savoury it's light, flaky, crispy and delectably buttery - and while it ain't good for your waist, damn does it go down well. If you happen to be in the area late on a Friday or Saturday night (before 10:00 as it closes at 10:30), Mamak is actually a great place for dessert. I particularly like the Roti Kaya with the pandan coconut jam and ice cream and the Roti Tisu (the Roti served like a witches hat) is always a crowd pleaser. Other worthy mentions are the chicken satay skewers and their impressive range of stir fries which go well with a plate of nasi goreng shared amongst a small group. In essence, Mamak has always been the perfect place for a good and reliable dinner with small groups of friends and family. Their Chatswood branch continues that tradition (but without the wait). read more

I am a fan of Mamak in Chatswood - it is great, fast, no-nonsense food served with vigour and prepared at lightening speed. The queue out the front is a clue - this place heaves most nights, and usually sports a queue out front. Generally it doesn't take long as these folks production-line you in and out pretty quick. And that is OK as it isn't really a place to linger all night over a leisurely bottle of wine - or not for me so far, any how. The menu is short, but varied, and the food is fantastic. Curries are served almost as soon as your order hits the kitchen - must be big pots of that stuff simmering out there. Green beans will frighten you they are so hot, and all the dishes are spicy, so be warned. So far haven't had a bad dish there in two large groups. The lamb curry is stunning, the satay sticks worthy of a street market, prawns delicious, roti soft and yummy. Yum!! I get told off for eating too fast here because once it all turns up (almost straight away) I just plow through it! I mean, why wouldn't you? Don't go, you'll hate it, al that queuing, I mean, seriously. More room for me. :-) read more

This is the best kind of fast food. If I worked in the area, this would be my lunch time staple. You can always tell a good restaurant by the number of people lines up in front and the count of diners making O faces and sounds. Service superb for what it is. The food here is sensational!!! The service is fast and friendly. Sure there are lines but what good restaurant worth visiting doesn't have a line or are booked out for weeks? There is entertainment though you can watch the chefs making roti through the window as you wait, warning though this will increase your appetite. How it works - you order all of your food and it is bought out in random order which is a lot of fun, you never know what is coming first :) The food - the satay sticks are amazing! we had 6 chicken & 6 beef and both were cooked perfectly and tender and the satay sauce is devine! They do the best Roti outside of Malaysia, and the dahl and sambal are the best in Australia. There is very good reason the multiple restaurants are always busy and there is a line not to mention the awards they win. Do your taste buds a favour and go to Mamak. read more

It was my first experience to Mamak in Chatswood and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. I didn't know what to expect from Malaysian cuisine (except perhaps for some spicy curries and basic satay chicken). Soon I found myself happily munching on some savoury and sweet roti and this chicken curry. If I have to recommend a dish, I would definitely suggest you order their Ayam goreng. It's a Malaysian style fried chicken which is absolutely mouth-watering. It costs $14 for 4 pieces or $4 per piece if you're feeling less peckish (you can easily devour more than four pieces!) I don't really like it when dishes don't come with rice on the side, abd here you have to order a plate separately (it only costs $2.50 per plate but it's a small serving) - but they're forgiven because the food is so good, and because it probably saves them time in cooking and bringing each dish to the table! Oh and make sure you get in early, they don't take reservations! read more

Cheap Eats. Two words which I've struggled to associate with the Sydney dining scene in recent years, but that has never stopped Gourmet Belly from taking up the challenge. And with great success in this instance...and quality is thrown in with it too. Mamak, is a bustling, no-fuss take on street hawker food, Malaysian style. From humble beginnings at Bondi's Organic Market in 2006, Mamak soon developed a cult following at the Chinatown Night Markets and has now become a Sydney institution with two branches; one in Chinatown, and another in Chatswood. On any given Sunday, there would normally be queues forming down the road. But today, our table of six were ushered straight to the table by their very efficient staff. From what I had heard, Roti seems to be the speciality here at Mamak, so (for once), I allowed the token Malaysian on our table do the ordering...without my belly having any input...Gasp. And I was impressed... All the food was fast and furiously good. The Ayam Goreng ($14 for 4/$4 per piece) would have made Colonel Sanders weep being so finger licking good, and gorgeously crisp without being overly greasy. The Nasi Lemak ($8.50) - arguably Malaysia's national dish was delicious and packed with flavour, which perfectly complimented the nice little kick we got from the Green Beans cooked in chilli and shrimp paste ($14) As expected, the roti in all forms were a huge hit, but my preferred was definitely the sweet version served with the fragrant scent of Pandan and Coconut. "Chicken divorced the nasi lemak twice" Been to Mamak in City lot of times and never been through this event. This is the second time that I ordered take away in Mamak Chatswood. Previously, i have ordered nasi lemak with fried chicken and satay chicken, so with no doubt this time I ordered my favorite food again. What happen once i got the ordered? No fried chicken for nasi lemak with fried chicken. The first experience, i thought the chicken flew away with no reason so i have no comment because i was lazy to comment too. However, because I was too cautious this time, then i checked my order and i found out that the chicken is running away again from the nasi lemak. But because this time, I was not that lazy so I dealt with it and the chicken returned to the nasi lemak. The way they handled is tolerable. The reason that I mentioned here is to hope that mamak can ensure my chicken wont run again for the third time if there is any. In overall, the food is worth it to try esp the satay. read more

Loved Mamak when we first had it in the Chinatown store and ventured to the Chatswood one with some apprehension that it may not be as good... Well I'd safely say there's no loss in taste and quality of the food and the price is still reasonable. We headed here for our 3rd visit on Father's Day with no queue at 12 pm. We ordered two lots of the plain roti that both come with 2 curries and sambal sauce. All the roti is worth trying - sweet or savory - we've tried them all. This visit we also have the fish curry, sambal prawns, lamb murtabak, fried chicken and satay beef/chicken sticks plus rice. To drink we have the classic Teh and for dessert - roti tisu (sugared and cone shaped), roti kaya (filled with pandan and coconut) and the candol (coconut ice with green worm jellies-nicer than I describe - I promise). All this for around the $130 mark for 5 people. The Rotis are the definate must haves and the fried chicken and satay sticks are well worth the wait. Curry is quick to come out of the kitchen as you'd expect. Although the queue here is pretty non existent compared to the city, a brunch lunch or pensioner hour dinner is worth considering if you're not keen to wait. read more

There are 2 mamck restaurants in town. One in the city and one in chatswood. The main difference is the line. The city one regularly has a 20-60 minute wait.while chatswood is often no wait or a few minutes. There is. No real difference between the two. Except I think the tourists go to the city one hence the lines. Ohh and the food. Brilliant malaysian food. It's frankly better than anything I've eaten in Malaysia. It's quick. Not expensive and super reliable. I've been going for years and I dare say likely the best chicken satay anywhere. They come in either 6 or 12. And man are they good. All of the items on the menu are great. I also like the chicken pieces. I'm. Not sure what they are called but they are the ones kinda like KFC. ( sorry but they are). But much better. read more

Mamak serves good Malaysian-Indian food but terribly overrated and certainly not worthy of the serpentine lines working its way out of their front door. The rotis are a must, and as can be witnessed by onlookers are made fresh on the premises. The curries are hot and tasty and the mee goreng is a very good version of the authentic KL dish However the serving sizes can be a bit stingy especially for their prices and I'd recommend you try them at lunch time where most of the curry dishes are available at more sensible prices A must try but unless you are a hardcore fan I don't envisage repeat visits read more

Fast service, great prices and yummy food. The menu doesn't have that many dishes but each one is done well. I mainly come here for the roti canai--the best roti I have ever had. Oh so fluffy and tasty. I could eat it all up w/out even using the sauces it comes with. The Ayam Goreng chicken is very nice. And for dessert, the Roti Tisu is one impressive cone of sugary, crispy roti goodness. Sometimes, there are lines. I don't love Mamak enough to line up for it but a lot of people do. This tells me that I am probably missing something and ought to explore the menu a bit more. read more

Food is good, but the Roti Tisu is a must, so crispy and thin, sweet and savoury, and goes amazing with the ice cream. So don't leave this place without having it. They've got a great range of drinks too. They have plenty of indoor seating but it is slightly cosy. They are a fast food joint so food comes out fairly quickly once you place your order. Just walking distance from Chatswood station. This Mamak is definitely our prefered outlet compared to the one in CBD. We hardly need yo queue here. Service is always good. Food came out reasonably quick. The Roti is prefect and the chili sauce compliments the dish really well. The curries are also very nice. Went here with friends last night, as soon as we turned up there was a long line out the door but I was surprised how fast we got through the door - about 10 mins. I ordered the plain Roti - that was the best dish out of all 3 - my friend ordered a chicken/potato curry - that was so spicy we couldn't eat it - but maybe that was just us! There's always a line out the door at mamak, but don't be discouraged by that, it's usually pretty fast. The service is quick and minimal. The food is average and cheap, but drinks are expensive and small. read more
