Imperial Signature - Sunday morning hangover yum cha

Went for yum…read morecha on a Sunday afternoon and then another Sunday for dinner, didn't have to book either times. The restaurant is pretty big and can accommodate groups. The yum cha is tasty but can get a little pricey. Overall some pretty good dishes. When I went for dinner, we ordered the peking duck, which I thought was pretty tasty but my cousin said it wasn't presented properly - with one slice of cucumber and no green onion, and too much hoison sauce. The lettuce wraps were a bit salty and didn't have the traditional water chestnuts. The seafood chow mein was good, the veggies were a bit bland. Overall it was a decent dinner, but nothing spectacular. One exciting thing was that the bathroom had toilet seat covers!! It's probably more exciting for me as an American living in Sydney and missing toilet seat covers.

The food was always good, especially the weekend Yum Cha. It just seems to be a lot more efficient. I've never been to YumCha (Dim Sum) and had one of the cart pushing "aunties" ask from across the restaurant whether I wanted more. Usually they glide on past and leave you hungry. Imperial Signature is really worth the effort if you're into Yum Cha. It's best after 11am when the carts are full and the kitchen is heaving.

Best to make a booking regardless of the day just in case. Takeaway system seemed to be in order too. We ordered quite a few dishes; mushroom pancakes, cheong fun, xo scallops, barramundi, veg fried rice, stir fried broccolini, veg Singapore noodles, and one off their specials menu - pipis. The running theme with all the dishes seemed to be that yes they were all really tasty, but they were also all in very small portions, factoring in the price and the fact that some of them were meant to be "bigger eats". We went with the recommended quantity, possibly even more, and still none of us were actually full. Oh well, I guess quality over quantity is what they're striving for (although if I was too be really nit-picky I'd say it's not quite that level of incredible, amazing, mind-blowing taste either). Nonetheless, as a whole every dish ordered was tasty with a couple of standouts. It was nice to have every dish come out and be reliable and not let you down. The mushroom pancake was my favourite by far and I highly recommend this, although you do only get one each which was a little sad . $11 for 2, so wasn't about to go ordering some more. Pipis were also delicious, so would recommend them too. Everything else was tasty as well, although the scallops were a tad overcooked. I enjoyed the cheong fun as well, seemed simple enough but worked well with the rest of the meal. Service for the most part was really, really amazing, they even discounted the entire cost of my red lotus mocktail (which was also delicious btw) when we went to look at the bill. Not sure why so can't comment if it was some sort of offer or deal. The aspect of the service which was a slight let down was just one extremely inexperienced staff who was completely clueless about everything and taking away plates unnecessarily and even trying to take our cups of water halfway through the meal. It was slightly distracting because it happened more than a few times, but it really was just down to lack of experience, not nasty service.

Have you ever wished that at dinner time you could teleport to Wagga Wagga for all you can eat for $5 Chinese buffet? Or perhaps you are one of those people who only ever season their food with salt and considers soy sauce to be very fancy? Or maybe you were in an accident that left you with no sense of taste? If you have answered yes to any (or indeed all) of these questions then Dais Golden Crown is for you! It is cheap and the servings are huge but that is about all it has going for it. With a menu starring classics such as greasy dim sim, bland chicken chow mein and of course good ol' sweet n sour pork with special guest pineapple lumps - Dais Golden Crown is guaranteed to please anyone who prefers their food not to have flavour. So, unless you are starving, Dominos is closed and IGA is all out of Lean Cuisines - I'd recommend giving this place a miss.
