I've never been much of a fan of cocktail bars. There's always one barman in those places who shows off a bit too much for my liking when half the time he's just making a screwdriver (vodka and orange). I'm not a big cocktail drinker, either; I prefer to leave drinking mojitos and Manhattans to Samantha and the Sex and the City girls myself.
Maloney's is sort of like one of those cocktail bars except it's not quite as posy as you'd imagine your typical cocktail bar to be. Its location at the back of the busy Scarisbrick Hotel on Lord Street means it gets a good mix of clientele coming in, but more often than not it's filled with Southport residents rather than hotel guests.
This means the atmosphere here is quite lively and rowdy, especially of a weekend and the drinks are usually served in fishbowls rather than your normal-sized glass. The staff there are friendly and attentive and love nothing more than tossing a few bottles of spirits around whilst making your drinks (even if I don't like it, many people do).
It's not the sort of place where you'd spend your whole Thursday or Saturday night, but if you're looking for a place to start your night out with a few cheap cocktails in a party atmosphere then Maloney's might be your sort of thing. read more
