I chose Malcolm DeSouza after having a bad experience at a "factory like" OB GYN in DC. I wanted a provider that would see me on time for appointments and also consistently throughout my pregnancy, labor and delivery. I have nothing but positive things to say about Dr. DeSouza and his staff. They were all friendly and knowledgeable and his office is located in an area of DC with street parking, which is always a bonus. Dr. Desouza delivered our baby boy, Charlie, in December 2014. I can say wholeheartedly that Dr. Desouza was the best decision my wife & I made in the entire birth-and-delivery process. Dr. Desouza was exceptional and we would not want to go through the process again without him. As an initial matter, leading up to Charlie's birth, Dr. Desouza was respectful and supportive of my wife's labor wishes, while delicately providing medical guidance where we, as typical DC over-informed parents, knew just enough to be dangerous. We opted for an all-natural, drug-free, vaginal childbirth at Sibley, and Dr. Desouza was entirely supportive of our decision throughout. But as can be expected in life, our hopes for the perfect labor went awry. After 38 hours of natural labor, my wife was exhausted and petitioning for a Caesarian section. We asked Dr. Desouza if he would be willing to perform the procedure, but he suggested an epidural which would permit us to have a vaginal birth. We had come so far, he prompted, why quit now? We agreed, and Charlie was delivered vaginally after an epidural and 42 hours of labor. Charlie's birth was not without complications, but he is now happy and healthy, in large part thanks to Dr. Desouza. Dr. Desouza was calm and assuring when needed, and a fantastic surgeon when it came to repairing my wife of an episiotomy and tear. Perhaps an oft-overlooked, but highly important characteristic in an OBGYN. And perhaps most significant, we learned from the nurses that while Dr. Desouza could have taken us up on our offer for the Caesarian, instead, he missed his own child's Christmas pageant at school in order to allow us to have our natural childbirth. He knew that a vaginal birth was important to us, and he also knew the we had forgotten the option of an epidural after the grueling 38-hour labor; he knew it would take more time to finish vaginally, but he waited. So he recommend to us this option when knowing it would cause him to miss his own child's Christmas pageant. I would venture to guess that there are not many, if any, doctors that would do the same. read more

Dr. Desouza is fantastic. I was only able to see him for the first maybe 20 weeks of my pregnancy before we moved to California... but we can't give him high enough reviews. He is a down-to-earth doctor, great bedside manner, realistic with his advice, caring, and goes above and beyond in his staying in touch/remembering you and your situation. As part of my prenatal care, I began seeing Dr. DeSouza (after several visits with Reiter, Hill and Johnson). He was highly recommended by a friend and you will find rave reviews in the mommy blogs. I have found him to be extremely patient, clear in explaining the existing evidence, caring/considerate, and trustworthy. His office staff is also very nice - great customer service. There is never a rushed feeling and he makes sure that you fully understand the relevant medical information; also, he is very accessible by phone for even the most minor of questions. Another important feature of his care is that he will explain clearly what the evidence says and/or where the evidence is limited and therefore it's a personal choice. Lastly, he will tell you if a specialist is required; this is hugely important to me that a physician is upfront about where specialized care should be sought rather than trying to figure it out themselves or keep my money in their office. If others are familiar with Reiter, Hill, Johnson, this is the exact opposite of the factory-like experience and for me is very satisfying and reassuring. My main concern used to be commute time but that changed once I had a few visits with my old practice! That said, the only drawback for his practice is logistical - his office is not next to a metro. read more

Well if you don't have any concerns and don't need to address any issues then yes -- he's the BEST doctor on the planet and you will LOVE him. As long as you don't disturb him with questions, he'll smile and show courtesy. After reading all the positive reviews, I began to feel like an anomaly but then quickly figured this doctor is definitely biased toward some patients, so the reviews may have been true. That, or I simply have higher standards of care. The nurse's overall attitude too leaves much to be desired. She usually mumbles something under her breath while taking blood pressure etc and before leaving the examination room and never maintains eye contact. It's super hard to understand what she says. The doctor had a factory style approach (atleast when it came to me since I don't fall into his selected patient bucket) and wanted me to finish talking in five seconds. After waiting for more than half an hour for my appointment, I'd expect he'd listen to at least few of my concerns but he seemed annoyed. I was suffering from severe constipation and all I needed was for him to give me some tips to help with it. I was paying him for the service, wasn't asking for free advice. Besides, he was annoyed within five minutes of seeing me after making me wait for so long. He also seemed a bit strange, seemed to forget practically everything I told him. I always took down notes and gave him lots of room for error but he definitely didn't care. He was also pretty rough while performing the ultrasound and the cloth he used to wipe the gel off felt worse than sandpaper (hopefully this review of mine gets brought to his attention and he switches it to something more gentle). There are tons and tons and tons of kinder, smarter and personable doctors out there, no reason to tolerate someone who offers such poor service(especially if you don't fall into the selected patient bucket). Again, it just may be that I have higher standards of care and have zero tolerance for BS in any way, shape or form. I did find a wonderful doctor to address all my concerns and I'm so grateful to the universe for this finding. The difference between my new doc and Dr Desouza is like night and day. So, my advice to you (if you don't fall into the selected patient bucket), is : raise your standards, don't settle because you feel somehow obligated as a manner of principle to the raving reviews, and keep shopping. You WILL find a doctor to meet your needs! read more

In 2011, Dr. Desouza cared for me while I was pregnant with my first child. The care that I had received was beyond my expectations. He is an amazing doctor, who takes the time to sit down with you and help you understand your body, your options and will devise a plan WITH you. After my delivery, we moved. I am pregnant with my second baby and I CANNOT find a doctor that compares. I am 20 weeks and have been through hell with the current practice I am seeing. At this point it's worth the hour drive to have piece of mind that I'll be in better care with a doctor who actually knows his patients. I'm tired of these large groups who pass you around and the quality of care gets sacrificed for that method. I highly recommend Dr. D. He's amazing! read more

Dr. Desouza was a wonderful doctor, both from a medical perspective and from a moral support perspective. He is always on time, and he and his staff are extremely professional, welcoming, and helpful. I highly recommend him. He delivered our baby boy, Michael, last Friday. I had to be induced early, and he was supportive the whole way through. I have heard that some doctors are eager to just do a C-section so that they can get back to the golf course, but Dr. Desouza is patient and checked on us at all hours during and after labor. Simply the best! Highly, highly recommend Dr DeSouza for his professionalism, attentive care, and one-on-one style. I, like other reviewers, had a very negative experience at Reiter Hill Johnson Nevin during my first delivery and was searching for more personalized care during my second pregnancy. This is exactly what I found in Dr DeSouza. Dr DeSouza was recommended by a friend, and I was encouraged by positive online reviews. I only arrived in DC six weeks before the birth of our son since I am posted overseas, but in that short time, came to very much trust his judgement and advice. Unlike so many doctors, DeSouza will walk you through the positives and negatives of each and every step and procedure related childbirth, and allow you to make an informed decision based on all the facts. The fact that he was actually at the hospital during my entire labor (11pm to 8am) gave me great comfort. For women searching for a long-term OB/GYN I couldn't recommend Dr. Malcolm Desouza highly enough. For those looking for obstetric care in particular, Dr. Desouza is an independent practitioner so you will see him for each and every checkup and very likely at your L&D ( he does have a backup for selected weekends and planned vacations). Dr. Desouza delivers at Sibley Hospital (also highly recommended). I found Dr. Desouza after what seemed to be a long, arduous search for an OB/GYN practice that takes insurance AND takes a personal, consistent interest in their patients' pregnancy, birth, and recovery as a whole. (Who knew this was hard to find!) Dr. Desouza was very supportive of what I was thinking for the process. At the first consultation he asked about and listened to my concerns, questions, fears -- and took notes! It is clear that Dr. Desouza respects and supports a woman's prerogative and decision making process, while being honest and up front. In short, I felt he had no agenda and a lot of patience as I worked up to the big event. His office is low-frills, but Dr Desouza is very involved (made follow-up phone calls personally when warranted). I also liked that he conducts imaging with his own ultrasound at each prenatal visit -- such a nice treat to see baby when the norm is one referred ultrasound during the entire pregnancy. I've since become a gynecological patient and have been absolutely satisfied with the care Dr. Desouza provides. read more

Dr. Desouza is great! I HATE finding new doctors and was very nervous when we planned a pre-natal meeting with him. I had researched and called many other doctors before deciding to try Dr. Desouza. He helped me relax and has been great throughout our pregnancy. He is almost always on time (or within a few minutes of being on time, which is the best you can expect for a doctor) and is super understanding of my issues with fainting after blood work and needles. He is very good at calming any anxiety and fears you may have. He also will listen to all of the crazy questions we have had. His medical assistant, Michelle is always wonderful. We haven't delivered yet but I trust Dr. Desouza and believe he has the best in mind for us and our soon to be family. read more
