I frequent Powerhouse Cinema often. I was thrilled when they announce they were giving us one downtown when I was still in grade school. It made me miss when Jillian's was here. When you walk in, you can see the ticket desk & movies showings. If you purchased your ticket online, you can redeem them at kiosk next to or at the desk. There is usually someone there to greet you. This location does have a bar so you grab you something for your movie or sit & eat. I like from time to time that they do themed drinks. When i went to see scary movies - I had a wazup drink which was yummy. Lately, i've been on the strawberry daiquiris slushies. Depending if the theater is packed, you can redeem your ticket at the concession stand. They have the typical snacks, drinks & popcorn. Seats recline while the rows are well spaced out. I always enjoy going to see movies here. Plenty of parking. read more

My husband and I came here on a Friday evening to see the Michael Jackson movie. We arrived early because we had heard this location had a bar, and we thought it would be nice to grab a drink and some food before the movie. It was our first time visiting this downtown location, so we were excited to give it a try. Unfortunately, our first impression wasn't great. When we walked in, there were two employees at the front ticket desk, both with their heads down on their phones. Neither acknowledged us with a hello, welcome, or even looked up as we entered. We eventually found the bar toward the back. The menu was actually a decent size, offering both food and alcoholic beverages. We ordered the fish and chips, nachos, and a couple of drinks. One small issue was that the bartender never asked what type of meat we wanted on the nachos (pork or chicken), and the menu didn't indicate there was a choice. As for the drinks, they were just okay. Mine tasted more like a Sweet Tart than an actual cocktail and wasn't particularly memorable. Our food was packaged for us to take into the theater, which was convenient. We also noticed a wood-fired oven that I assume is used for their pizzas, which looked promising. The next hiccup came when it was time to have our tickets scanned. There was one older employee handling the line, and the process moved incredibly slowly. Something that should have taken seconds ended up taking close to ten minutes due to the pace of the line. The theater itself was nice. It was spacious, the reclining seats were comfortable, and the sound quality during the movie was very good. Unfortunately, the food was the biggest disappointment of the night. The nachos were, honestly, a complete miss--covered in excessive nacho cheese with what tasted like mystery BBQ meat. We each took one bite and threw the rest away because we knew we weren't going to enjoy it. The fish seemed fresh, but it had absolutely no seasoning or flavor whatsoever. The fries, however, were fresh and ended up being the only part of the meal I actually ate. We ended up buying popcorn and candy instead. Overall, the theater itself was comfortable, and the sound quality was great, but nothing about the overall experience really stood out enough to make me want to drive all the way downtown again. The movie theater is beautiful and I love the recliner seating. There is a large selection of snacks to choose from and really sweet theatre staff. Additionally, I love the area of downtown it's located. I most definitely will be back again. I gave three stars because of the grill. I ordered a beef burger and my friend ordered a grilled chicken sandwich. My beef burger came to me burnt and not edible at all. The meat was black and dried out. It was terrible. I sent it back and they said they were going to remake it. I waited patiently and they brought me out a grilled chicken sandwich. I politely asked for a refund and left. No apology at all. read more

The policy is one thing. The way customers are treated is another. I went to the Malco Powerhouse at 37 weeks pregnant and had an empty reusable water bottle with me. I wasn't trying to bring an outside beverage into the theater--I specifically wanted to fill my EMPTY bottle at the theater's water fountain because my doctor has told me I need to have consistent access to water. An employee near concessions stopped me and told me outside beverages weren't allowed. I explained that the bottle was empty and that I needed water for a medical reason. He directed me to the employee checking tickets. I explained the situation to her and asked whether there was any possibility of a medical exception. She was extremely rude and dismissive and brought over another supervisor. I again explained that the bottle was EMPTY and even offered to show them. I explained that I simply wanted to fill it at the water fountain located just outside the theater entrance. The response was essentially just, "Outside beverages aren't allowed." I understand having a no-outside-food-and-drink policy. I really do. What I don't understand is the complete lack of compassion or common sense when a customer is explaining a medical need and is literally asking to bring in an empty bottle to fill with the theater's own water. I've also been to this location before and have unfortunately had consistently unpleasant interactions with the woman who checks tickets. She has a demeanor that makes you feel like you're being treated as suspicious or doing something wrong simply for walking into the theater. This latest interaction unfortunately reinforced that experience. And yes, I've previously been told I could simply purchase a bottle of water for around $7. That's frustrating enough on its own, but being told that when I'm specifically asking because I need access to water while heavily pregnant is particularly disappointing. I could have easily put the empty bottle in my purse and said nothing. Instead, I tried to follow the rules and asked permission. I wish that had been met with even a little understanding. Policies can be enforced without making customers feel humiliated. That's the part Malco needs to work on. read more

Searing isn't as comfortable as I thought it would be considering they have the reclining seats. Movie and sound quality was great. Popcorn was stale and I'm sure it's because I saw them bring out big page of popcorn that was already popped. Taste like it was from the previous day. Covered Parking was great. read more

Came here to see Sinners on its second weekend. Not being from the area I arrived early to give myself time for food/finding the theatre and was so glad I did. Arrived at 6:55 for a 7:15 movie and there was a line out the door for people trying to enter the theatre due to there only being one ticket taker that seemed very confused with how to handle tickets. I headed to the concession line for food which was confusing since all the lines ran together and people were constantly getting in the wrong line but no employees attempted to help direct. I ordered nachos and they were apparently serving people cold cheese which they didn't disclose until after it was bought and given to you. At that point i only had a few minutes until my movie and the ticket line was still at the door so I dealt with the cold food and got in line. The theatre itself was fine minus the chairs obviously having seen better days. The parking lot as I left was a mess as there was only one way in and out causing a backup in both directions. I probably would not bother with this theatre again while in town as the whole experience was more stressful than enjoyable. read more

After buying the tickets, waiting in line for food, one out of four in my group didn't have there ID for a rated R movie and they wouldn't let is in the theater. So after driving downtown and waiting in three lines we didn't get to see the new movie the Odyssey. If one person has there ID and is well over age. Who designed this cinema? Theater 1 is directly next to the concessions and the entrance. Tried to watch a scary movie in there and every quiet part was met with the CACKLING of the staff that were all congregated at the concession stand. Totally took me out of the movie experience. 1. We get here to see LILO & Stitch. I order a kids popcorn that's $10 for them to not have anymore Lilo & Stitch containers, cups, nothing 2. It's filthy in here and it stinks. It's often hit and miss with the service at this malco location but I must admit, it's also a fairly consistent 4. Usually it's pretty clean, the food is typical theatre options but good and the ambiance fluctuates along with whatever current showings are. We like to visit Powerhouse because of its convenient location when it's offering a movie that we want to check out. It's also the newest theatre in the memphis area, and offers the reclining and updated chairs with the Dolbey Atmos soundsytem! read more

Powerhouse is a really nice theater in the downtown Memphis area. It is clean and spacious with parking available in the front. The employees are friendly. There is also a restaurant here, so you can choose to eat before or after the movie. The restaurant does serve alcohol and the food is fine. I especially like the theater's cozy seats. read more

We went for cinema day. The price was $3.00, OMG. This cinema is really nice. Its kinda tight/smedium sized lobby. The concession stand is smedium and if people aren't standing in front, I'd walk right past it. I think its a romantic situation, datenight groove thing. I don't recognize bringing the kiddies. Even in the rain, this was a very exciting and fun experience. It was my first time at this location, and I must say that it was worth it. The host and hostesses were pleasant and professional. My friend and I visited this cinema the day after opening night. I LOVED IT! A beautifully decorated establishment with seven screens for your viewing pleasure. The waiting area is equipped with a few couches, a fireplace and TV. The bathrooms even have couches (at least the women's bathroom did) and are super nice. There's a full bar and grill and the menu has some pretty good picks! They were still working out the kinks when we visited, but nevertheless we enjoyed ourselves and Captain Marvel! I absolutely cannot wait to visit again. It could definitely be a cute little date night spot! read more

The mean lady checking tickets is on a power trip. And she's not even necessary. You have to buy tickets at the front. The restaurant looks great, but it takes at least 30 minutes to get your food and 15 to get a drink. While this might work in an actual sit down restaurant, nobody has 15 minutes in the middle of a movie to get a glass of wine. Plus everything is packaged to go, even though there's lots of seating. Why cook the pizza in the pizza oven when it's made in the kitchen, cooked in the bar, then returned to the kitchen. To be packaged up in a to go box. Why???? read more

Unfortunately, this is review #2 regarding Malco and their popcorn....for those who read the last one...i was very disappointed that for a theater boasting food/ grill, that their popcorn was shipped in..(what one of their employees told me behind the counter when I asked) ...this time the popcorn tasted the same (mediocre at best)... I ordered a size medium, i think it was $7.00...and the bottom 1/3 was crumbs, kernels and kibble...seriously, ripped off on so many levels...buyer beware. For my downtown movie goers - rejoice! Finally there's a spot in Downtown Memphis to catch a film without having to drive out to Overton Square. While I have not yet tried the restaurant side of Powerhouse, this review will be in regards to the theater itself! There's nothing I love more than my weekly tradition of Tuesday movies though normally I'm attending at either Studio on the Square or Ridgeway because they are more in the range of where I live and work. Yesterday we had a little extra time on our hands so we decided to make it a treat and head downtown to Powerhouse and I'm so glad we did! One thing I must note - at all other Malco theaters movies are $6 all day on Tuesday's (hence how the tradition began) but at Powerhouse we were charged $7.10 each. We didn't realize till after we'd paid so I'm not sure how that came to be but hey - still cheaper than what a ticket normally is. We were in theater 3 and I hope this is true of all their theaters - they had the most amazing reclining chairs! This is what Malco has always needed! Whenever I see a movie while traveling I'm able to truly "Sit back and relax," and now it's a reality here as well! Woohoo! The theater we were in was also rather small and intimate with an incredible projector. The lighting and the picture were both fantastic. On a Tuesday afternoon the theater was nearly empty. They have fairly large bathrooms that are very nice and kept very clean. There's plenty of parking available (pictured attached) so you don't have to worry about that the way you normally do when heading downtown. Overall - we had a great experience and we'll definitely be back to the Powerhouse! read more

Today we had tickets to the first showing at 12:50pm and we got here at 12:00pm hoping to get something to eat beforehand since the grill is "supposed" to be open at 12:00pm. They kept everyone waiting outside until 12:25pm and the employees would just walk by us and ignore us even after greeting them with a good morning... pretty rude! When they unlocked the doors there was no apology for the wait, greeting, or explanation (also rude). Once inside the restaurant was still closed. Wow! Racist staff. The ONLY white family and are literally harassed throughout the entire process from purchasing tickets to eventually getting to the seats. Demanding 18 year olds present ID for a PG13 movie. Fine. After presenting the staff doubting and questioning the authenticity and whether the ID's match up. When presenting tickets now a "verification" was required. Not one black person needed verification of their tickets. Now all y'all white folk need to step over here to have purses searched for outside contraband. Did I mention not one black person had their purses or bags checked. WTF MALCO! I took my spouse here to see Captain Marvel and we were very impressed. This establishment is beautifully decorated, has an amazing sound system in the atmos theater we were in, a full grill and bar with an impressive menu, and the staff was very friendly. Another selling point for us is that the theater is within walking distance of my spouse's work downtown. My only recommendation is to add more options for celiacs and non meat eaters like me. read more

The lady who checks your ticket is a Nazi. I don't mind her checking my ticket but to want to check it every time I go to the restroom is ridiculous. Also if she wants to check tickets for theaters 1 and 2 she needs to move her little podium in the front. And the restaurant/bar is the slowest and ridiculously expensive. $18 for a glass of wine??? Service was terrible. Waited at the bar for 30 minutes without even being looked at by the bartenders. I honestly felt bad for them with how horrible or they were at their jobs, these bartenders looked lost behind the bar they couldn't even find the liquor for the other patrons who were being served after the standard 45 minute wait. I had to leave the bar without being served and was still late for my movie. Honestly worst service experience I've ever had would never recommend this theater unless you go on a Tuesday morning when nobody else is there. read more

I'm giving three stars because this doesn't seem to separate the restaurant vs the actual theater. I would give the theater five stars and the restaurant two, so I'm compromising. At first, the service was great! It seemed to be a manager helping us, and she was quick and attentive getting our drinks and order. After she took our order and delivered our drinks, she did not come by for the remainder of the night. Other staff brought out our food; of course this is expected. However, no one stopped to ask how things were, refill drinks, or even deliver our tab. We had to stop another staff member to ask for a box and our check. This long delay (legitimately 25 minutes without acknowledgement) led to us rushing to our movie. Unfortunately, by the time we got to the movie, there had been a mixup with seats where someone ended up taking ours because theirs has been taken by someone else. we were in an Atmos theater where choose your seat when you purchase tickets, and luckily there was a security guard nearby who helped us straighten things out. The theater was clean and comfortable and movie and sound quality were incredible. I hope the service issues in the bar/grill area are fixed. The food was pretty good (loved the truffle fries especially) and they have a relatively good drink selection. They were quite busy for a Monday evening, but come on. This place is brand new and the newest Avengers movie was released just a few days ago. Be prepared. I will likely give them another shot. read more

Just went and saw the new Spider-Man. Auditorium 1 was very clean. Wish the temperature was a little cooler for the summer heat. Bathrooms were very clean and lines moved quickly. Recommend if you don't want to drive to east Memphis/midtown to see a movie! The recliners were nice, as well as the staff. read more

This is for the restaurant side. If you eat there, do NOT sit at the bar. Sit at one of the tables instead. Twice I've sat at the bar and both times, once the food came out, the bartender literally never came back and almost made me late for the movie. Both times I had to flag down a different employee just to get the check. The first time, I figured it was because it was a busy Friday night. But yesterday it was a Tuesday afternoon and my wife and I were literally the only people in the restaurant. The bartender was just chatting with another employee at the other side of the bar. The drinks are legit though. Ok, pre-Covid I took off work early and wanted to reward myself for an exceptional week at work. Came in to the restaurant/bar/grill area around 12:30ish. Wanted a bite to eat before the movie. I was alone so I ate at table and went to the bar. Sat at bar there were 2/3 bartenders. Go figure! But it seems I got the female black. Not sure why! I'm black and female too, maybe that's why. Ordered beer and shot but asked about local beers and asked her which she liked. She was not very open or friendly, so I continue talking to her. A couple next to me very friendly. Got my beer and shot. The couple left and my beer was gone but the bartender never came back. She basically ignored me sitting right in front of her. Now there's a single white guy 3 seats down from me. He ordered and she walked in opposite direction. I get on my phone and start a conversation wt a friend we're talking and shooting the breeze. Girl talk....she's over listening to our convo. Then I'm sitting their just waiting for service cause my movie is starting. I never get my tab and I ask by motions I need my tab. She never comes. Nor has the couples spot been cleaned. So, I stop her and ask for my tab. She says it's there- I see it in the water on the bar. I'm thinking when did she put it there and when is she going to take my card. She rudely said it's already been paid. Ok, is it the golden rule to be super nasty and ignore patrons! Micro aggressions! I always tip above and beyond been a waitress know the struggles. I just looked at her and asked are you going to take my card she walks away bring the manager back and says I call her a bitch. WOW, I was thrown a back. I've never call servers that. There was no confrontation just wanting to pay the bill and get to my movie. I looked at the wet receipt realize she'd took my drinks out already. Kool, then I asked to speak wt mgmt that's when this heavy set white female advised me she said I called her a bitch. I said that's ridiculous and walked away. This manager said madam I'm gonna have to ask you to leave the restaurant. OMG, I vowed NEVER to return to this establishment. The food wasn't fresh or made in kitchen - tasted asthough it was packaged and warmed up. Then to get this type of service from a black female. I was shocked! It's been 2.5years and guess what I live right across the street. My business is less than 3 minutes away. I've shared this with no one but the attorneys in my office and building would be livid and outraged for me to be accused of such slander. We're doing a corporate event there soon so if this same bartender is there and manager. I'll monitor the room to see how the staff treats people. *This is an option not a 5Star restaurant where folks have hordy tordy attitudes of grandeur! Lady this just fast food and a drink! You not in Cali or New York. So if you don't like your job or black patrons QUIT please don't put that NASTY attitude on the public!! I enjoy the small [6 row] theaters and have never gone to the larger ones. Seating is spacious with reclining chairs. I have tried the bar a couple times but just for beers so do not have an informed opinion about any food. They serve local brews that are well made. Plastic glasses, cutlery, basically everything plastic is used. This is one thing that keeps me from returning to the bar area. It is also the reason for the lower rating. read more

Amazing movie theater!!! Clean with a bar & restaurant (which we didn't eat but will try next time) & reclining seats !! My "sex on the beach" drink wasn't strong at all more like a tropical caprisun but it was $5 sooo... However Derek had a $12 amaretto sour & it had a karate kick & a punch so I think it's safe to say we know where the mistake was.. Awesome place though! read more
