The open lawn and tables are great for unstructured play, picnicking, and family gatherings .The lush landscaped grounds make it inviting for play, exercise, and relaxation. The most interesting discovery was made in a corner of the park where I found a cannon from the El San Francisco de Asis sunk in 1731. According to the sign underneath, it was recovered by Jack Deppner who donated it to the town of Indialantic. Deppner was a history teacher at the middle school, the President of the Brevard Historical Society, and a salvage diver. He made national news when his students tried to find a time capsule that he buried in the 1970's at the school but forgot where.

The sanctuary is located across from Juan Ponce de Leon Park which is where you need to park before crossing the street to enter the preserve. The one mile loop trail through this preserve takes you from the Indian River Lagoon to the Atlantic Ocean. Along the way you will traverse through saw palmetto and wildflowers. Located in the preserve is the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute which operates a marine mammal ecology and animal health lab. This sanctuary is a stop on the Great Florida Birding Trail. An observation platform over the Indian River Lagoon is the ideal spot to view shorebirds, juvenile sea turtles, osprey, manatees, and pods of dolphins. Note that there is no shade on the trail and in this brutal heat I didn't make it that far. I recommend visiting during the cooler winter months. This area contains ancient sand dunes that were once the home of the prehistoric Ais who were hunters and gatherers. Prior to contact with European colonizers, the Ais population had grown to several hundred thousand and may have flourished for over 10,000 years. The park contains important town buildings including the Town Hall and the Melbourne Beach Community Center which was formerly the Women's Club. It also has a playground, several gazebos, public art, restrooms, and splash pad. Displayed throughout the park are Hometown Hero banners that recognize Melbourne Beach residents and family members, past and present, who have served in the Armed Forces. The Parks Board sponsored this project. My favorite part of Ryckman Park is all of the historical buildings and structures. The Ryckham House, one of the oldest homes in Melbourne Beach is front and center in the park. The park also has a replica of the Beaujean home and first post office and the Melbourne Beach Pier which was built in 1889. I very much enjoyed all of the history and beauty of the this scenic waterfront park. It was especially nice to relax on a bench swing in the breeze as I took in the view. If there is a drawback to this park it would be that you have to pay to park. The kiosk was broken and you had to either scan the QR code or text to pay. It took a few extra minutes to figure it all out but the enjoyment I got from this park was well worth the $3.25 I paid. While I was sorting out the parking I noticed Djon's Steak and Lobster House across from the park. It is a longtime community favorite known for their excellent happy hour menu. I will definitely put it at the top pf the list next tine I am in the area.

The park was named in honor of Louis Bronsteel, a prominent figure in Melbourne Beach, Florida, with a long history of involvement in local government and community organizations. Bonsteel Park amenities include free parking, restroom facility, ADA accessible wooden beach crossover, and a boardwalk that goes from the park to the Barrier Island Ecosystem Sanctuary next door. On A1A at the entrance to the park there are hiking trails. Dolphins and sea turtles have been spotted here. This park is popular destination for swimming, surfing, and surf fishing. The Brevard Zoo Sea Turtle Healing Center uses the beach in Bonsteel Park to release rehabilitated sea turtles. Interestingly Spanish coins have been found from Spanish ship wrecks from 1715 and 1733. Treasure hunters with metal detectors can be spotted combing the beach. While I didn't find any treasure I did have a nice visit on the boardwalk and while exploring a few of the hiking trails.

They have a lot of rules here, but the police and lifeguards do not enforce most of the rules here, you always see people smoking, with dogs, fishing, alcohol, surfing in swimming areas, they have a lot of rules here, but do not enforce them at all. There are many signs all over saying no dogs, but people bring them anyway. Today a selfish lawbreaker lady was bringing her dog right on the public beach and it was going to the bathroom, she just covers it with sand. How sanitary is this? Will the next person who lays down there know that their is dog pee and poop there? Be careful where you sit here. We wish the lifeguards would enforce the rules here. The lifeguards are pretty lame about enforcement. Down in Palm Beach, they would blow their whistles and not allow any law breaking, absolutely no dogs are allowed, this county is too lax and allows a lot of lawlessness. Some people are very selfish here too. We just wish the lifeguards who are paid with our tax dollars would stay until 5pm. Often times they leave at 4pm, 4:30pm, 4:45pm, they almost never stay until 5pm like they are paid to, seems unfair showing no work ethic from the lifeguards here, we never saw this happen down in Palm Beach, they stay until the top of the hour as they were paid for the 8 hours. They take advantage and leave early a lot here at this beach and county beaches. The beach is wonderful, it is the people who ruin it for others with their selfishness.

A friend found this spot and we came after brunch to play. We knew that we had to pay to play but, to our surprise, you don't need to pay if you come after 12pm. The park was pretty big, as far as number of courts. I remember there being about 12 pickleball courts but can't remember how many tennis courts there were. Since we came after 12pm, which is the hottest time of the day, there weren't many people using the courts despite it being the weekend. The courts seemed to be very well-kept. There are bathrooms a little walk away but you need a code to enter them. There is also a water fountain but would recommend bringing your own water versus drinking out of it. Overall, a wonderful park to play pickleball in if you're in Melbourne!
