We arrived early and found out the visitor center did not open until 10. So no dinosaur education for us. Payment for us was on the honor system since the center was closed. $8 for a none-Montana resident car.

My work brought me to Sidney, MT for a year and a half. Aside from what I do for a living I also love to take photos, hike, and be outdoors. I was so glad to find Makoshika existed. The first time I went I fell in love with it. And it quickly became my favorite spot to bring my camera. Sometimes I would go just to unwind, listen to music, or to de-stress. It's a beautiful, clean park and you can tell the Rangers take pride in keeping it that way.

Perfect place for a day of relaxing exploration. Plenty of places to camp and pull over. Gorgeous views. And a nice interpretive center. Montana State Parks have out done themselves.

Makoshika is one of the finest parks in the country, and I'm including national parks in that comparison. Montana appears to take a laissez-faire approach to park management, with low staff levels. That said, this park is staffed with posted hours and it has an administrative building, and it is Montana's largest state park, something which even they don't take lightly. It is especially appealing to people who are looking to hike on less regulated trails. This will be a minus to some wannabe walkers and explorers, but I consider it a plus. It feels more real to me this way. I could easily spend half a day on any given trail, especially the Kinney Coulee Trail, snapping photos like a wannabe pro. On that one, you can almost literally turn in any direction and get a worthwhile picture. Camping is great, especially if you can get a site in the upper loop (circa site numbers 24-29), weather and roads permitting, and it is very windy, even in summer, but it offers spectacular views and a great rustic feeling of the lightly treaded West. The campsites are also quite large, compared to those at other parks. It just amazes me that this huge park is right on the outskirts of Glendive, transitioning directly from a quiet residential area, and that you could live there and walk the trails on your lunch break or weekend quite easily, getting there by bike or by car.

Notes: Take the top loop for camping. Arrived at this site and was more than surprised at the views and peaceful quiet times. The lack of electricity and showers might put some off but for a brief camp (we did tent, which is the only type allowed on top loop) it is worth the stop. Worth the $20 I would say. Would I go back? Yes Would I recommend? Yes

An absolutely GORGEOUS state park! I wish we could have stayed longer and hiked some of the trails. Someday we will return to spend a few days exploring.

It's a small-ish local museum so it won't take much time. You'll find artifacts dedicated to both cowboys and Native Americans which is great. I've learned a lot after my visit and it was worth the time and money. Lots of beautiful items being exhibited and you probably won't see such a big collection of artsy saddles anywhere! I'd recommend stopping here while you're visiting Theodore Roosevelt National park and the town of Medora.

This self-guided museum was the perfect place to stop before our journey into the actual park, and I really think it should be on your itinerary when in the area if it isn't already. It won't take a ton of time, maybe an hour or so to complete the three levels, but it's really worth it! The museum has a minimal fee for adults, free entrance for kiddos 7 and under, and free entrance for those 18 and under on Wednesdays and Sundays. Don't miss the short, but really informative documentary about the land here which was very interesting to see prior to heading out into it. The film speaks about Theodore Roosevelt's connection to the area and the battles which have taken place here. They even have saddle seats in the theater the kiddos loved! The kiddos ages 6 & 8 also loved riding the horses and dressing up like cowgirls! I loved tying them up in a lasso for a bit! Don't miss this section of you have wee ones with you! I really liked that this museum combines both Native American history and well as that of the cowboys. I loved the contrast of old and modern found in the exhibits here. There's amazing artifacts from the Native Americans such as moccasins, instruments, intricate beaded clothing, bear claw accessories, moccasins, arrowheads and more. There's also amazing detailed saddles, bad-a** guns, awards and metals from new rodeo stars, hats, belt buckles and more. We highly recommend a visit here for full understating and appreciation of the park. A few cool photo op items across the way like a giant buffalo skull the kids love playing in!
