We stayed in the downstairs suite which had a ridiculously, wonderfully huge bathroom, our own sitting room and cozy feather beds. Kolleen, The owner, a font of local history and information, gave us an enthusiastic welcome complete with wine, maps and local lore. She had the house relocated to her property in six pieces. It had one owner, previously, whose pictures and writing can be seen on the suite mantle. She also has some of the woman's lace dresses hanging in the wardrobe. The breakfast was eggs benedict, with some of the best hollandaise sauce I've ever had, and she even made a special crawdad sauce for me because I'd never had it before. We loved our stay here and if we ever come back through this way, we'll stay here again. Cozy, friendly and welcoming.

This is the kind of place that helps you understand how Longfellow captivated America with his epic poem telling the Tale of Acadie along the banks of the Bayou Teche. The kids even recognized a picture of Delores del Rio from the 1929 classic film on the wall in the parlor. The rooms were so big and airy, with period furniture, and french doors opening onto the balcony. Orator Huey Long started his campaign for Governor just outside the door here, promising a better life for the poor, beginning his march toward the White House, his quest for power cut short by assassination. So, if poetry and history hold no meaning for you, then pass this place by, but, if you believe in the power of words and ideas, in English or French, long for times past, and have some iota of imagination, then come, stay. Definitely not a hotel chain kind of place. The rooms are spacious from what I saw. We had two double beds. The bathroom was large and there was a big tub. It sits right on Bayou Amy and you can watch alligators swimming by from the porch. There aren't many outlets for you to plug your electronics in. They're mostly behind the bed. When we went to try to put the plug behind there, the headboard fell off of the wall. It was just barely hanging on this piece of cork board... The problem is that the walls are super thin. You can hear everything from the room next to you; everything they're saying and watching on the tv. So if you're unlucky and are next to people who stay up late...we'll you aren't sleeping. You can also here the music from the bands playing in the club next door. There are doors that attach the rooms, so I guess if you have a large party you can visit each other. When we left for the day, we didn't put the do not disturb sign on our door, but they still didn't come to make the beds. The free breakfast is just a couple of cereal options, coffee, orange juice and an assortment of packaged pastries you can choose from. The craziest thing about this place is the cats. The parking lot is completely crawling with cats, like 30 of them. Everyone tries to feed them so they stick around. They're very friendly and sweet, but be careful because they might try to follow you inside. It is convenient that there's a bar and a restaurant attached. There is a lot of construction right when you get off of the interstate, so be careful that you're GPS doesn't try to reroute you like it tried to do to us.

We sampled chicken and sausage gumbo with a small scoop of potato salad. Delicious. 2. Prejean's in Broussard. We sampled dirty grits and scallops. The sauce was a little on the salty side, but the dish was quite flavorful. 3. NuNu's in Youngsville. We sampled, link boudin, boudin balls, chicken patties, chicken crackling, and smoked sausage. Everything was delicious. We were gifted a 3 oz container of NuNu's Cajun seasoning. 4. Fezzo's Seafood, Steakhouse & Oyster Bar in Broussard. We sampled fried alligator with sauce and a char grilled oyster. Delicious. 5. Poupart Bakery, Inc in Lafayette. We sampled King Cake with pecan and cream cheese filling with a cup of Community Coffee. Yum. The perfect end to a tour of delicious foods enjoyed by locals everyday.
