They were already fully booked for the rest of the night, and closed for the next two days. I was so disappointed thinking that I won't be and to try it based on all the reviews. Since we were staying around the corner from there. I asked the guy if I can get take out. He did me a favor and was able to accommodate that. I saw a "take away available" sign hidden when I was waiting for my order, so I am pretty sure that they weren't taking take out orders either. We took it back to our Airbnb, and it was so yummy. We got the Munster and the Gratinée. I'm so glad that we were able to try this place during our trip. Thank you so much to the kind staff who was able to accommodate my take out order. Unpretentious, (the name roughly translates to the "Table of the Market Salesman" friendly and warm, its all about having a good time. I very highly recommend this restaurant. Now, for some details . . . First thing you have to know, is that you must reserve a table in advance! This restaurant is very popular with the locals as well as the odd, well-informed tourist. I saw a few unhappy couples turned away due to the lack of space. The restaurant is truly a small gem and very much worth the visit if you can. The second thing you should know is that the hostess / owner / waitress, Isabelle speaks perfectly good English so language should not be a problem. Her partner, Marc resides mostly in the kitchen working his magic, but he did pop his head out from time to time to see that everything was all right. It was more than all right! Finally, what can I say about the food? My girlfriend had the appetizer of snails, and I had the appetizer of fois gras. The snails were amongst the best I ever had - and since the portion was abundant, served shelled and in a charming glass jar, my generous partner allowed me to sop up the remaining sauce after she had finished the actual escargot. Was it divine? It was divine. I'm a bit of a fois gras fanatic. It's hard to get here in the USA, and when you do, it's very pricey! At Isabelle and Marc's the fois gras was, literally, as good as it gets. It is served sautéed in a pan (not in a pate) with a wonderful side of fresh fig. I wholeheartedly recommend both these appetizers to anyone that wants an outstanding rendition of typical French fare. Our main courses were both wonderful and very memorable. Mari, in keeping with her non-meat preference had the fish, and I had the lamb. They were both wonderful!! Don't think that the French portions are small, we practically rolled out of the place and that's having split a dessert! One final counsel. . . if you can, have some of the eau de vie that they serve there. This is a very strong alcohol similar to vodka, but infused with whatever fruity thing they make with it. I had the pear and Mari had the apple. Wow! If you are familiar with these drinks, you will see that the quality of the eau de vie served here are truly outstanding. Overall, this was not just a great meal, it was a wonderful experience. Isabelle made us feel very much at home, like we were honored guests, not just tourists passing though. Everyone else at the restaurant was (at least) speaking French, and if you can read the French reviews, you will often see something to the effect that this is where the French go for their French food. This place was filled by 8:00 on a Tuesday night and no one looked ready to leave in less than two hours. When we entered just before 7:00 no other customers had yet arrived and most tables contained a "Reserved" sign. The gracious lady who seated us took the time to read the menu, including the specials, to us English-speaking folks. She even allowed us to sample two different Pinot Noir's so we got the one we both liked. Who even bothers to that nowadays?! My better half ordered the Escargots and the Cordon Bleu nature and I ordered the Spring Roll special and the L'onglet De Boeuf medium rare. Both starters arrived pippin' hot and were delicious. The American-sized entrees were as good as we have ever had. The potatoes, cauliflower, zucchini and carrots were amazing as were the shallots covering my perfectly cooked medium rare steak. It was an experience not just a meal. Though it took a bit of effort to find this fine gem in the Colmar maze, it was definitely worth it. Don't forget the reservation.

We were a little rushed as they need the table at 8:30 which was surprising as usually they consider you have the table all night. We started out with a small appetizer which included fois gras (which was my first). Found out later that you are suppose to make a wish you for time, well that got wasted.. The rest of the meal was perfect. They assigned us a waiter who spoke English which was very helpful as we had no idea what we were eating. Amuse Bouche Starter: Foie Gras Main: Duck Burger Dessert: Strawberry Carpaccio The best dish was the foie gras starter this was neatly presented and gained an astonishing remark of 'this place was definitely worth trying' from a dining companion who rarely cares about food or where they should dine! The Strawberry carpaccio dessert looked carefully assembled was a light and refreshing dish to end the meal. The Prix Fixe menu at 38 euros was competitively priced. Service was professional, one waiter was able to translate the French menu sufficiently. The pork was perfectly braised and fell off the bone with zero effort. La Choucroute was precisely what you would expect: a plat for sausages and bacon. This pork lover's plate not only lives up to our expectations but also far surpasses them! Never would I ever have expected to say such a phrase, as this is the best sauerkraurt I have ever had. With thinly shredded cabbage that wasn't too sour, it complemented the meat on this plate like they meant to do one another. Tips and tricks! Make a reservation. You…read moresee, we made the mistake of delaying our lunch until after 2 pm, when most establishments were then closed until dinner - our dining options were very limited and Des Tanneurs was one of the only places still accepting diners. Des Tanneurs serves traditional Alsatian fare in an environment with typical Alsatian decor. It's cite, and kitschy, and I love the warmth. It reminds me of my grandma's house. It was packed when we arrived, and the service was what you might expect at European restaurants. Unfussy, but they get the job done. This was my first time trying Alsatian choucroute -- what I received was a massive ham hawk served atop sauerkraut and some steamed potatoes on the side. Side note- I hail from a region in the U.S. where sauerkraut is also very common, and I had more the my fair share growing up. But Alsatian sauerkraut is less sour with a more complex flavor, which I attribute, in part, to the juniper berries. Anyway, I loved the whole, stick to your ribs, massive portion of choucrute I received. There was so much ham, I could not eat it all. The dish was so tasty and surprisingly less salty than I was expecting. My husband went with a melted Munster cheese dish served with roasted potatoes, which he loved so much that he declared was even better than raclette. Les Tanneurs was a lucky find for us, and it made an already fun day, even better with delicious food. I'd recommend when visiting Colmar.
