I will say there were a few staff members who seemed to truly care about my loved one.. but otherwise this facility is severely understaffed and dirty. When visiting, my loved ones hair frequently looked dirty and her clothing was stained with food. Many times her clothing, shoes, etc. would go missing. There was never an activity or music or anything to stimulate the residents. They were either in their rooms alone or out in a public space slumped over in a chair. I do not feel that they make any effort to feed or help the residents eat their meals. She had a few falls, once leading to a cut on her hand. God only knows how long she laid on the floor before someone helped her, and there was so much blood on the carpet that it looked like a crime scene. The rooms and carpets were dirty and often smelled of urine. Needless to stay, they atleast provided a locked door, but this is NOT sufficient care for the elderly. I am unsure how the management of this facility can live with themselves knowing this facility is so poorly run. The State of Maine should shut this place down.

Friends of mine were recently relocated at Cape Memory Care, a move not of their own choosing…read morethough they definitely needed 24 assisted living care. i am a professional caregiver and so have visit or worked in a variety of senior living facilities. When I visited for the first time, a few days after they moved in, I found the place attractively decorated and their room was clean and quite pretty. I was hit with the odor of feces when I entered the building however, and the odor persisted in most of the public spaces. I accompanied my friends to dinner and was distressed to see only three attendants in the dining room, one of whom was working on medications. Med techs are not supposed to be disturbed while preparing patient medications, but this person also helped with residents in the dining room and in fact, was the most accessible of the three. English was not the native language of the attendants and they spoke to each other in what I assume was Somali. They accompanied residents into the dining room - one of whom was dressed in an untied hospital gown exposing her depends. They did not seem to be conversing with the residents as they brought them in. The food looked decent. The attendants were busy bringing dishes to the tables and did not interact with the residents much. I was disappointed by the lack of interaction and by the fact that none of the attendants were people the residents, all with diminished faculties, would have been comfortable with in their past lives. I was sorry that the attendants seemed uninformed about my friends' particular needs. Providing an environment where some of their former comforts are available is key to a positive adaption to their new space. I had agreed that my friends needed the move, but have more than second thoughts now. I know that staff try to do their best job, but the facility needs a level of staffing that allows them to do a good job, as well as the training and administrative guidance that assures a standard of care. I saw neither.

For example, the patients would be given a piece of chicken that wasn't cut up. They had no knife to cut it so they would try to cut it with a fork and couldn't. None of the help seemed to notice. In this case, my mother didn't eat the chicken because she couldn't cut it up. My mother died alone. The last week or two she was given shots every couple of hours to sedate her. I was there...just a couple of miles away, and no one let me know that she was going to die within hours. Not her caretakers and not the facility. When I arrived the next morning to visit her, she was dead. No one knew it until I notified them because she was left alone when I could have been there with her. It breaks my heart that she died alone. As her personal rep, I reached out to the facility a month later to get a refund for the last half of the month that she had paid for. I was told her estate wouldn't get her money by the Director although I found paperwork on the government website that stated the refund should be given when the patient leaves. The lawyer even sent a letter to the facility encouraging them to refund the money. They did not respond. I expect they do that to everyone which is so wrong. It wasn't about the money. It's just not a fair practice which is why I'm writing this review. I can't afford to pay a lawyer to chase after $800! Clearly it would cost me more than that to do so. I wonder how many others have had a similar experience. Perhaps this complaint will make me feel just a little bit better and hope that the facility will change for the better in the future for someone else.

Our friend was put into The Wood at Canco Retirement Home Portland Me. 3 years ago. Things changed…read moreover the 3 years. What she were told when she went in to The Wood at Canco and what she received over the time she was there was a great big LIE. Lie number 1. She was told she would have a ride to doctor appointments in the company van. Shortly after she got there they lost they driver and never got another one. And from what we seen and heard there never tried to get another driver. Lie number 2. She needed her ears taken care of she couldn't hear, this never got done they told her they had an onsite nurse. Not much help if any from any nurse the whole time she was there. Lie number 3. After time goes by she would be checked on to see if she would have to move to another part of the building for when she would need full care. That meant her would go into hospice care when the time came and she would be allowed to pass there, that never happened. Lie number 4. When she was getting so she could not manage alone anymore they said she need to go some were else for hospice care. She was told she could live out the rest of her life there. That was one of the biggest lies, a very CRUEL thing to do to a person close to the end of there life. The big thing for going there was to live out her life there and not have to have to much change that late in life. Pretty crappy for $7000.00 a month. After some time there the cleaning was lacking, the food started to slip and a big lack of help. When they moved her out they told her they would send the things not needed anymore to Goodwill then they informed her she needed to pay more than $400.00 to have her things removed that was LIE number 5. and Now she is in the City Hospital costing her even more. No person at 100 years old should have to go threw things like these. These places suck your money dry then throw you out like a bag of trash. Lies on top of Lies I hope people read this and will pass the word and never to put your loved ones in this retirement home.

I rented a CPAP machine from them and paid all of my share of the copays up front and told them I would take care of supplies myself. As a retired disabled Veteran, I recognize Uncle Sam's contributions to my financial and medical wellfare and did not wish to incur any more charges than was absolutle neccessary. I paid over 500 dollars up front and was told the machine would be mine after so many months. For five hundred some odd dollars, you can buy a CPAP machine on line through CPAP Supply. Not only did they take my money, but they billed Tricare (my military/retireee medical insurance provider) over 80 dollars a month, therby making a hefty profit for themselves at Uncle Sam's expense. They contacted me several times a week to buy supplies for the machine from them-after I had told them several times I will take care of it myself. THEN they had the audacity to send me a bill for several months of rental charges-after I had given them all of what I was quoted as my total rental costs. That was the final straw. I returned the machine and was told I would receive a check for the prorated amount of rental expense I had not yet incurred-over $300 dollars!! Two weeks later-no check. I just called and was told that they 1) only issue checks on Fridays 2) that the insuranc ecompany still needed to be billed (processed they said) -which happens on the 2nd, the day I happened to return the machine and 3) even though the monthly "claim processing" had happened, for "some reason" no check had been cut or sent. I would rather burn shit in a barrel down range on deployment than ever deal with this company again. I want my money, Kennebec Pharmacy!!

My brother recently checked into Saint Mary's voluntarily--bravely, vulnerably, and fully willing to do the work. Within minutes of arriving, he was strip searched and treated like a threat, not like a human being fighting for his life. There was no compassion, no trauma-informed care, no basic dignity. He left shattered and humiliated. This isn't just a "bad experience"--it's a failure of care. It's a system set up to break people further when they're at their most fragile. I've been through it. I know what it's like to walk into a place full of hope and walk out feeling dehumanized. The difference is, I lived long enough to find a facility that met me with kindness. Some people don't make it to that second chance. And I worry every day that my brother won't. This center claims to offer addiction treatment, but based on our experience, it operates more like a correctional intake facility than a place of healing. The emotional damage done in those first few minutes can take months--or even a lifetime--to undo. Some people don't get that time. If you're considering this place for yourself or a loved one, I urge you: ask questions. Ask how they treat people upon entry. Ask if their staff are trauma-informed. Ask how they protect--not just the body--but the dignity of those who come to them in pain. Because dignity matters. And at Saint Mary's, it was the first thing they took away. -- Treena T.
