'Ello chaps! For…read moretourists visiting Germany, it's important to know that 'reservations' are a thing and often tables may be empty, but unavailable as they're reserved for an arriving party. We were fortunate to get a table pretty quickly. I love the ambiance of this restaurant. The menu is heavy on the burgers, which are delicious. Well prepared, and a lot of options to personalize your burger. Burgers are always cooked well done. The only downside to this restaurant - which is very standard in Germany - is the charge for even tap water. Nearly 3 euros and 50 cents. That's a big dinger, but the food and service are great. For the water charge alone I give Hans im Gluck 3 stars out of 5.

Many years ago, I went to law school with a lady from Germany. Post graduation, she moved back to…read moreGermany. When I visited Frankfurt, we got to hang out. She recommended Apfelwein Wagner so we stopped by for dinner. Ambiance (5/5): This is where this traditional German restaurant shines. The building in which it is housed has some awesome art on the exterior. Once you get inside, there's an open air area that makes you feel like you're outside but your'e actually inside. I recommend sitting here. It's lively and the design is awesome. In the back of the restaurant, you'll find an indoor area. Service (2.5/5): European service tends to be lackluster, but our service experience was a little below even that standard. We had to track our waiter down several times. Overall, quite slow. Drinks (4/5): If you can't tell by the name, Apfelwein Wagner specializes in apple wine. The largest size is served in beautiful handmade blue and white carafes. I personally am not a fan of apple wine, but it's definitely worth trying. Instead, I went with a beer or two. You can't go wrong with that in Germany. Food (3/5): They have several schnitzels (different meats) served with potatoes and green sauce (another Frankfurt specialty). You can't really mess this one up. Solid from the thin breaded cutlet to the potatoes and the green sauce made from a bunch of different herbs. My girlfriend at the other time, ordered some ribs and they were a big dud. They were rare, highly chewy, and highly fatty. She couldn't finish her meal and I don't blame her. So a bit of a hit and a miss. Apfelwein Wagner is a popular spot and I'm glad I checked it out. I'd come for the drinks and the ambiance. rather than the food though.

Not both! Also, if you don't have a reservation during a busy week (like when the Messe is in town) you may or may not get in. We didn't have a reservation and got one of the last seats in the bar area near the hotel. It was fine, but even that area got filled fast. I ordered the "I sometimes dream of grilled chicken". It's boneless chicken thighs on a skewer. Served with fried onions and a nice mayo dipping sauce. The bartender suggested the oven baked potato. They were good, but I now realize totally unnecessary as I could barely finish it! My partner got the BFC Supreme which was fried chicken thighs, fried cauliflower and steamed/sautéed potato. Very good (I liked mine better!!) He also ordered the Marko Polovic drink. If you like whisky + orange soda, this is your drink. Very refreshing. Great vibe and nice staff, considering it was a busy night and this is a pretty trendy place, they were helpful and patient with all of our questions. We'll make reservations next time, for sure. But we may opt to sit at the bar again. Very intimate.

The Tel Aviv cocktail was a liquid Mike & Ike. Wow! I was going to have a Brooklyn Lager for a laugh but ended up getting TWO Tel Aviv. The pita is the best outside of Israel. So perfect and dense. It went well with the better than average hummus. We had the Shwarma and seafood lavah. Both were amazing! The plates are huge; could have shared. This is my new favorite restaurant. It was one of the next meals I have ever had. Truly, go and let go! You'll be glad you did. Open daily. Highly recommend reservations via Open Table. Takes credit. See website for more details.

When we were there it was hopping busy with locals sometimes groups of 10+ having dinner. The service was great. We were treated as though we belonged and it felt great. They're known for Apfelwein (you guessed it, Apple wine). It is a flavorful, light, and refreshing wine that paired nicely with our meals. They make a green sauce that is so fragrant and tasty I started eating it by the spoonful. The food was so good. We ate everything, leaving nothing behind. This traditional German tavern was everything I was hoping it would be and then some. I am totally in love.

We walked over after exploring some attractions in Frankfurt and taking a nice stroll in the park. Ambiance (4.5/5): This is where this traditional German restaurant shines. The outside of the bar and restaurant is beautiful. Above the restaurant, there's an apartment complex covered in a mural. It's a welcoming start. From there, there's a beautiful outdoor patio where you'll see more murals. That's the best place to sit. There's also a small interior dining area and a small back patio if you want something a little more private. Service (3/5): Pretty much your typical European service. Not terribly attentive or friendly but acceptable. We had to grab our waiter's attention several times. Drinks (4/5): When in Rome, do as the Romans do. When in Germany, that means beer. The running joke on this trip is that the best cocktail in Germany is beer. I had both a helles beer and a weizener (wheat) beer. Both are quality as you would expect from German beer. Food (3/5): I had the veal schnitzel (breaded cutlet) which is served with fried potatoes and green sauce. Green sauce is a Frankfurt specialty and it's made from a blend of seven herbs. It's a little too herbaceous for my taste but still worth trying. The thin cutlet was solid and I always gravitate to veal on a menu as it's not something you come across every day. With that being said, I've had a lot of traditional German food on my trip and this experience was a notch below the norm. I'd focus on the drinks and ambiance as the highlights here.
