My dad found a Bruce Springsteen set in mint condition; Alex was kind enough to give him 20% off. Since my fathers never treats himself to anything, Alex's generosity meant a lot to both of us. Unfortunately, not everything was for sale...Alex happens to be a pretty talented painter, his portrait of the critters character was my favorite. I also understand the smaller the business, the more local feel - I get it. I believe in supporting small businesses. I hope this place stays around for awhile but in all honesty I don't see it being open in a year. I've been wrong before, so I hope I'm proven wrong! I'm just gonna say you will not get the average record store feel with this one - which is sometimes a good thing. There was not very much of a selection. I was all excited to check out this place and when I finally visited, I was disappointed. It was like I stepped into one small near-empty room. I was impressed with how "new" it was with freshly-coated paint and all (this is in a really old downtown Alton building). But again, the room was very small, probably not much bigger than your bathroom at home. The owner's father was sitting there, and he was very friendly and I asked him a few questions. The answers were all the same - everything was limited and local. That's the one thing that I found cool is that the owner, Becca Peterson, is focused on selling vinyl and shirts from local bands. How cool is that? But that's pretty much where it all ends. I was just not that comfortable browsing while having the guy watch every move (like I was gonna do anything, right?). There wasn't even any music playing when I was there. Every record store should have something blasting from their old-school speakers! Just saying. If there is a vinyl record you want, there is a sheet available for you to write down what you want - and they will order it. But most people like me are better off getting them online like Amazon, Discogs and plenty of others.

They have a huge selection of video games and as a gamer, I love that. They also have a wide variety of stuff between movies, cds, anime, posters, figures, and whatever else you could be looking for. Now the negative aspect. What I do not like are their prices. I am thrifty, so when I am shopping used video game stores, one tends to get a general idea/feel for what things should be priced at. Slackers tends to price everything above Market Value. Whether they do it because it is a college town or because it is a bit of a nicer area... it seems to be working for them. I love swinging by when I visit my friends in the area, but I hardly ever purchase anything since I can find it for a lot cheaper where I live. Any who, they really do offer a large selection of everything. I love the fact that most of their SNES-era games have boxes on the shelves. Nostalgia kicks in looking at some old gaming boxes. The games don't come with the boxes, as they are store displays. But still cool to see! I will try and snap a few photos the next time I go and update this post with them. It's a great place to scratch almost any nerdy itch you have, but it does come with a premium price. If you are in the area and are looking for something a bit cheaper on the video game side of things., check out Grumpy Bob's Emporium a few miles away. If you need more of a geek fix (board games, figures, comics), you can pop over to Heroic Adventures. It is literally a 2 minute drive from Slackers.
