Dorothy and Mel Tanner met at the Brooklyn Museum Art School, married in 1951, and began a life in…read moreart together. Dorothy focused on sculpture and Mel on painting. They continued their art practices, taught art, ran galleries, organized seminars, and traveled--finally settling in Miami in 1966. Polymethyl Methacrylate (Plexiglass/acrylic) was developed in the late 1920s, was first marketed in 1933, found many uses during WWII, and then entered civilian markets after the War. Acrylic transmits light and the Tanners began to work with this material in Miami to make light sculptures. They had discovered Plexiglass in the early 1960s in New York when working on commissions for Air Products, Raytheon, and GE. Light sculptures became their main focus and they converted their studio into a theater to combine the light sculptures with synchronized music and visuals. A critic dubbed the new art form "Lumonics" in a 1970 article. The Tanners continued to make light sculptures and, working with a team of helpers, presented the Lumonics Light and Sound Theatre at venues around the country. Mel Tanner died in 1993. Dorothy collaborated with team member, Marc Billard, on light sculptures, music, and video to enhance the Lumonics experience. Dorothy moved the team and archives to Denver in 2009. There have been many exhibits of the Lumonics light sculptures around the metro area since then. Dorothy received the Innovation Award of the [Denver] Mayor's Awards for Excellence in Arts & Culture in 2018. She died in 2020. The Lumonics School of Light Art, the Lumonics gallery, and Lumonics Immersed, the current multimedia presentation, are being maintained by the two remaining members of the Lumonics team. They are currently raising funds to preserve the 200 light sculptures, archives, and multimedia presentations at a permanent facility. I've been to quite a few of the Lumonics exhibits over the years. The light sculptures are mesmerizing and fantastic. My girlfriend and I recently signed up for the Lumonics Immersed experience. This involved a trip to the warehouse where we were given lots of time to explore the 75 sculptures on display. We then watched a short documentary about the Tanners, followed by an hour's multimedia experience orchestrated by Marc Billard. This is hard to describe, but was a fascinating use of the materials and a relaxing escape for the evening. There's lots of information on the Lumonics Web site. Check that out, sign up for a class if you're art-oriented, and definitely attend Lumonics Immersed. It's a unique experience.

Sadly the original artists have passed but the spirit is alive to this day. The best part is you can take a class to build your own art. I highly recommend this place. My mom also wanted the lamps, so it took about three weeks from when I first emailed and when I received the lamps. (I was pleasantly surprised they would ship them to me without spending the 8,000.00 shipping minimum) They shipped them to two separate addresses and they did research on the cheapest way to ship them. I really apprecieatd that. Once they shipped it only took about 2 days to get to my mom and 4 days to get to me. I worked with Tena from the Thornton Colorado store.

I found a hole in one of the cushions of the sofa and they came out on the 17th and replaced the cushion. On May 30th I found a second hole in one of the other sofa cushions. I called and informed them that I wanted to return the sofa and loveseat at that point. Since then I have found a 3rd hole, though I digress. I ordered a new different sofa and loveseat that was a special order and would not arrive until July 15-18. I have called and talked to no less than 12 "customer service" people, all the while being told that "it would be another week". Today I called and was told that now it would be "another few weeks". By now I am livid! "Nikki" said she would call the manufacturer and call me back. She of course did not call me back. I called again and was told I could not be transferred to "Nikki",and spoke to "Chelsea". She informed me that yes, it would be another few weeks. I asked her if I could speak to a manager and she informed me that she and everyone there IS a MANAGER. I said that there HAS to be someone above her, she said "no, I report to no one". I informed her that now I am going to and find furniture SOME PLACE ELSE, and that I will then call and have AFW come and pick up this DEFECTIVE AND CRAPPY furniture and get a refund. She said "you can do that if you like". Honestly, this is NO WAY to treat customers! I have gotten furniture from AFW in the past and have never been treated like this. Trust me, DO NOT GWT FURNITURE FROM THIS COMPANY!! The value for the money you spend is simply CRAP! And apparently they do not care.

First of all, this is not your typical cheesy…read morelittle old west portrait studio where you throw on some shredded saloon hall costume that ties in the back, throw a leg over a chair and look like you're slugging back a bottle of JD. This place is first class. It's located on the quaint main street of historic mining town, Central City. When it's time for your portrait sitting, they lock the shop door, so it's ONLY your time and you get full attention and privacy so that there are no onlookers gawking. It's a fairly large studio with beautiful back drops, authentic antiques, accessories and a huge selection of vintage clothing, shoes, hats, gloves, suits etc and they're clean and well cared for. There's an actual dressing room! Milda, who is the owner, photographer and overall artistic genius, (with an adorable European accent) makes sure you look just right for the portrait. She takes her time to make sure every last detail is perfect. We were tired of the boring saloon hall photos you see everywhere, so we opted for a more refined Victorian tea look. Milda gave us the exact style photos we wanted and I couldn't be more pleased with them. I now have a special and unique keepsake of me and my mother! Together, with her husband and co-owner, they share so much about the history of Central City and make the entire experience authentic. Now for the photos. AMAZING!! The prices were very reasonable, so much so, that I bought a copy of every shot. I would highly recommend checking out the gallery of photos on her website so that you can see the quality of these vintage style portraits. I will definitely be coming back to this place, I loved it!
