We are blessed to have a live theater in Sebastopol with an amazing offering of plays and performances. So looking forward to their return after our stay at home is lifted. We have been to several of the plays over the years and each one had characters/performers that engulfed the room with their theatrical presence..Being so close to the stage is like being an active participant feeling the array of emotions and witnessing the unfolding of the script. Knowing some of the actors brings a whole different reality....seeing them in character so opposite of their normal personality you wonder if they have a multi personality disorders...Interesting to see the play with a room full of people and the actors act as if we did not exist and were watching through a one way mirror. All of them completely consumed with perfection for the roles being played...Being a one stage setup the change of scenes are limited but effective. Main Stage West is a small, intimate theater that makes you feel like part of the production. Only a scant few rows in the theater and for sure every seat is good. No obstructed views or sight lines. We saw the play Blackbird which is a difficult gripping drama about a pedophile and his female victim seeking answers after many years. Beautiful performances, especially by Sharia Pierce in the lead role. It's not Broadway but Main Stage West gives you a unique up close view of the show. Very enjoyable. read more

We had the great pleasure of seeing The Glass Menagerie tonight - brilliantly done. My husband (who does theater) and I have just spent the better part of an hour discussing and marveling over the performances of the four actors. They transcended the stage with their portrayals of multifaceted characters. This was a wonderful production that everyone needs to go see. read more

Main stage west has brought their A-game-again. This theater has seasoned actors that fill the cast of Sam Shepard's American modern horror story, Buried child A Séance. It takes guts and gusto to make the show work. This Pulitzer prize winning play has been cast & Directed Brilliantly by Elizabeth Craven. This show will takes your breath away, Has you laughing out loud And brings tears to your eyes. A Birdseye view into a dysfunctional family that will give you peace in your heart about your own. Character development and deliberate Delivery is old hat for this team of actors. A sensational rendition that will shake you to your core and leave you wanting more. The incredible set (by David Lear) props and sound design were part of the authenticity that made this show so dam real. Please take the time to see this play, it is one of many productions I have seen here over the years and has impressed me enough to give them a review as upstanding as this production. I am so sorry to be writing this after The Tempest at Ives Park has ended, but hopefully next summer Sebastopol Shakes(spear festival) (i.e. Main Stage West) will do as wonderful a job. Sheri Lee Miller, the director, said I should - meanwhile - check out the regular season at the theater and I intend to do so. Especially if she directs. She also welcomed me to give feedback (as in: tell us the truth) after I see a play. Last night The Tempest made me smile with happiness for most of the (edited from original) two hours. Two hours was long enough. Not only is Shakespeare still magical, but the setting was totally blissful: I mean blissful. Actors ran in and out of the stage through the oak trees that dot the park; the quality of acting was ...mixed. Calaban - Keith Baker - was flawless (did he make a wrong turn towards Sebastopol on his way to Broadway?) but even the less talented actors were mostly high spirited. I didn't mind the few pauses, a few muffled syllables! The bright pacing, the great set, the comedic style, the - of course - wonderful play itself, and the good spirits of the cast added up to a delightful evening in Ives park (that was mercifully without a softball game or pool lights to distract and not brutally cold.) Amaretto brownies at the snack bar were a plus. read more

Quality theatre done large in a small venue... I took advantage of an opportunity to attend last night's performance of Neil LaBute's "The Shape of Things" at Main Stage West in Sebastopol. LaBute is an acquired taste, as he work tends to highlight the negative aspects of human behavior in all its shocking glory. One often leaves a LaBute play with conflicted emotions. On one hand, you feel an appreciation for fine acting - if you're lucky and the performers do justice to his well written dialogue. On the other hand, you often leave with a profound sense of sadness after spending two hours watching incredibly narcissistic people rip each other to shreds. That's exactly how I felt after seeing this production. Anchored by strong, committed lead performances by Keith Baker and Jennifer Cote and with solid support from Dana Scott and John Browning, "The Shape of Things" examines the internal and external changes one chooses to make (whether on one's own or through the influence of others) in the pursuit of love. Sounds quaint, right? Hardly. The journey these characters take from their first "meet-cute" to the inevitable climactic human train wreck that follows will have you laughing heartily at the beginning and cringing mercilessly by evening's end. That some very nice actors (several of whom I know) could realistically portray such shits is a testament to their acting and David Lear's direction. Lear also did the set design and does some very creative things with the relatively small amount of space available at Main Stage West. I had a big problem, however, with one specific design choice. An early scene is set outside a theatre where the two leads await the arrival of friends. The "theater" is represented by two posters and a door. One poster is for "Medea", which the dialogue references and is probably a LaBute in-joke. The second poster was for Main Stage's next production - "Exit the King". While the setting of the play is never made clear (a small college town? New York?), I'm pretty damn sure it wasn't set in Sebastopol, California. There are plenty of ways for MSW to advertise their upcoming shows, as the large posters throughout the lobby and program advertisements demonstrate. This needless, local injection into the environment that everyone on and offstage worked so hard to create felt cheap and tacky, and actually took me out of the world of the play for quite some time. Surely this wasn't the intent, but it was the result for me. Thankfully, by play's end I had been drawn back in. Please, MSW, think twice before violating a play's integrity this way again. With that one caveat, if you're looking for an evening of theatre with top-notch acting and with subject matter bound to lead to some heavy post-performance discussion, I encourage you to check out one of "The Shape of Things" last two performances.
