As you peek through the front windows, you get an idea that Main Street is many things. A bar, a coffee shop, a breakfast hangout - depending on the time of day really. The setting is a little bit like a greenhouse or conservatory up front due to the large glass windows and generous use of hanging plants. It's part of the Story Bridge Hotel but quite a distance from the bars and next to their pricier restaurant.
This was my second visit, the first being at night when it was a crowded bar full of middle-aged singles. This time I was there for a late breakfast, and was happy to find the place busy but with tables available.
We settled in and were happy to discover table service available. There were plenty of staff and all very lovely.
Although the ceilings are high, the noise level was tolerable.
The wait for our tea and coffee was acceptable but it took a while for our breakfasts to arrive. My friend had "the works" and I had ordered what I thought was simple poached eggs and bacon. We were both impressed with the meals that arrived - "the works" being a huge serving of a traditional breakfast and mine coming with lovely chutney. The waitress had explained about the bacon - it's "their" bacon, some kind of different rasher than most Cafes dole up. It's thick cut and straight rather than thin and curly. And OMG is it good! Thumbs up for that.
We were there quite a while talking and having an old-friend catch-up, but at no time were we hurried along or made to feel we should settle the bill. Loved that.
Prices were typical of Brisbane - my breakfast and a pot of tea were $25, so not cheap - but I thought good value for the chutney and bacon experience alone.
Definitely recommended for breakfast or brunch, this cafe in a pub is a nice place to meet outside of the bustle of the city and I have always found it easy to get a park nearby.
Tip for young players: if you're lingering, choose a booth or table rather than a high stool. Your back will thank you. read more
