I have lived in the area for 2 years and have been searching for (the perfect salon.) I met Lawrence and thought he may be the one. I went to the salon for a hair style and root touch up. I am old fashioned and when the roots came out darker It was not what I wanted. I called Lawrence, went back a few days later and he did a correction. I liked my haircut although, we may go a bit shorter next time. He does a great head massage when he shampoos. I like him and Mai, the owner. They aim to please and are very pleasant. They lure you in for their promotions just like their color bar express, when they are really touching up only your roots, after couple visits they increase the prices without letting you know. They tell you the day of your appointment. They will give excuses and use your hair length for the price increase. And even use their location (El Paseo) as an excuse as well. I'm not a typical person to write reviews, but I feel moved to spread the word about Mai Salon. They quoted it right "You've tried their salon, now come try Mai Salon." I'm a model and here and then I need a touch up. My natural hair color is brunette. I had gone from this dark shade to blonde. I was meeting with highly recommend hairdressers, but after a few months, I began to notice how dried and overly processed my hair was looking. I was fortunate to find someone like Maily. We met during a bridal fashion show. I remember walking towards Maily's chair, and feeling a bit unsecured about my hair. I sat down and Maily began a conversation. I remember laughing to some of her jokes. She sure has humor! We then moved into a conversation about my hair. She noticed how overly processed my hair looked and offered to see her in her salon. I go in the next day for a refund for the extra color cost + tip I gave (before seeing that my hair was messed up). She gives new stylists opportunities, which is great, but they are fresh out of beauty school and not the caliber you would expect at a nice salon. Well, I have finally found the one man I want doing my hair. I came to this salon as per Deal of the Day on the local news and Lawrence is the one who was assigned to do my hair. I loved him, he was open, had options for me and heard what I said. I had an all over color and then highlights and he hit the color right on. Its a long time to be in the chair but he made it enjoyable and he gives a killer scalp massage! I would have given this place a 5 star but when I first called no one called me back, so, I didn't know what to do so I called again. My mom and I came to Palm Desert for the weekend and she got me a Groupon deal for a color, cut, wash, and blow dry. Paulina did my hair and she is one of the best hair dressers. She went above and beyond and made sure I was getting exactly what I wanted. She did the most thorough job and kept asking if I was happy with it. I had the best experience at the Mai Salon and Paulina is so bubbly and friendly everyone who goes there needs to ask for her. She is the best!!!! read more

I would give this place one start if I could. Maybe it was the Groupon I purchased and customers are treated differently. However I went in for a basic color, cut, and highlights. Brown and blonde. She applied the bleach and after 15 mins she said it had turned orange and need to wash it out. Nothing else. I asked how she was going to fix it and said there was nothing she could do cause my hair would fall out. I told her that has never happen before nor has it turned orange before. She offered to tone it. After washing and forgot to tone and said oh well it won't help anyway. The owner of the salon arrived and took over and was extremely rude right off the bat. She reluctantly added more highlights. Not where I asked for them by the way. She went on to say I should choose a different color that would be easier to maintain. Odd I thought what does it matter what I do 6 weeks from now, jokingly I said don't worry I'll go to super cuts while laughing. She scoffed at me and said thats your problem right there. I told her she needed to have a bit more patience being in the hospitality business. After 20 mins I asked if it was ready as apparently my hair could fall out at any time. 10 mins later she did it however didn't use shampoo. I asked if she was going to actually wash it and she said I did, I scrubbed it. Again shocked as I know she did not, however not wanting to argue further with stupidity I went back for the cut and dry. Just a min later the police arrived and she asked me to leave. I couldn't believe the unprofessionalism of this salon and the rudeness over nothing. Lucky for me there were many salons to chose from. I left and said I would be leaving her a poor review. The salon across the street salvaged the day and did a great cut. But to my surprise this lasy still wasn't done. She came over to the new salon and said listen everybody I just called the cops on this woman so be careful. I laughed and told her to go back to your shabby salon. The other patrons also told her that was very rude for her to do. I still can't believe it happened. Never had I had such treatment anytime. So stay away from this place. They have horrible customer service in such a fancy, high priced salon that is not acceptable. Anyone would be better off going to super cuts but I don't want to bash the super cuts. The owner hadn't known it was purchased through Groupon and tried to say, if front of the police officer - see now she leaving without paying and I gratefully advised her this zebra hair was already for and to have a nice day. I hope she reads this review and takes i to a account that it's us the customer that pays her salary and her tacky decorations. She won't though as snooty people rarely feel bad when they are snooty. I went to Mai Salon on 8/18/17 with a Groupon for haircut, partial highlights and style.I am not from the area and was going to be in town for a relaxing weekend. First, my stylist was an hour late! She called me 5 minutes before my appointment, I was already at the salon, to let me know she was running late. After a few more calls she finally suggested I run erronds or get coffee. I didn't appreciate the salon asking me to change my whole day around. When I did end up going to get coffee she called wondering where I was!? Really! After the half hearted appologies we started my consult. I showed her two pictures of the color and style I wanted, copper/honey highlights sprinklled throughout my hair. Stylist seemed very excited and said it would be great. The salon owner and stylist examined my hair and started to make some comments. I felt like everything they were saying about my hair was an insult! Sorry I used a box hair dye and cant afford to get hair treatments ever month! The owner steped in again and made some suggestions. After the stylest and owner had a chat in the back I was presented with an upsale! Another $80 to do the color I wanted. After my color was washed out, the copper/honey subtle highlights turned out to be bright red highlights just on the sides. Nothing like what I showed her!!! Owner blow dried my hair and continued to make comments about my hair. Do not go to Mai Salon, rude uppidy owner. They did not listen to what I had to say and judged every decision I have ever made with my hair. Not a good expierence at all! Kara is absolutely amazing. She is very skilled at what she does. I came across her great Yelp reviews and I called her, devastated, after getting a bad generic cookie cutter haircut. With what she was able to do with my heavy, thick hair, I can imagine that she can handle any hair type beautifully. She added texture and character, giving me a beautiful cut that I am soooo happy with. If you are looking for a stylist that is versatile and who is really skilled at adding character and style to your hair, rather than a generic cut like what I was unfortunate to receive before coming to Kara, I hiiiighly recommend her. Why anyone would call this salon 'trendy' is beyond me. There are many more trendier salons on El Paseo. Trendy is not what I am looking for in a good haircut anyway. I had my haircut here and was very disappointed in how it looked the next day. I specificially said I wanted a low maintenance cut, that was was and wear. The stylist cut and then spent lots of time drying it with brushes, and irons, the whole deal. As she was doing this I said, I am NOT GOING TO HAVE TIME TO DO ALL THIS at home and I do not want a high maintenance cut. PLEASE! Well, the next day, it was horrible and I could not style it at all. For weeks I have had to get up earlier just to try to not have a bad hair day. If you go here, be certain they understand, again understand what you want. I think I finally found my place! The atmosphere was casual and down to earth. Which was a pleasant surprise to me since it's located off of El Paseo. It's a bit small but the space is utilized well - I felt immediately comfortable. I've had a few bad experiences in trying to find a stylist in the desert that knows what they are doing with curly ethnic hair and the last was a DISASTER which was 5 months ago and my hair was in desperate need. Richie was my very informative and brilliant stylist who, even though I was on a Groupon, took her time asking questions and explaining what we were doing - always making sure I was ok with the process and I knew she was truly hearing what I had to say. One of the best hair experiences I've had ever. She took her time and I love the results (not fabulous yet, but due to the issues I had with prior stylists she did amazing!) - and I know she is my new hair savior - I already scheduled my next visit! read more

I was willing to give Patty a try at the Mai Salon, I was told that she was experienced and had been cutting the type of style I wear for many years. Patty was very nice and sweet, but she can't cut ALL TYPES OF HAIR. When I arrived I expained about my type of hair - it is thin and fine, and I needed particular attention paid to one area where it was sometimes unmanagable. I wanted an easy haircut that was essentially dry and go - but also wash and wear. I stressed I wanted a "MINIMAL TIME" haircut. I have never had to spend more time on my hair than I now have to. It is lots of time with the blow dryer trying to get it not to flip out in the wrong direction (something that never happened in that area of my hair before). I am not very successful at it, and within an hour, it is flipping out on one side. I do not have a lot of money to go somewhere else to get the cut fixed, so will have to live with it for a while, but BUYER BEWARE, when they say experienced, ask how long they have been cutting and doing what type of hair. I am not sure what the other reviewers mean by "trendy salon" it doesn't look any different than others on El Paseo, and that is not the reason I would pick any salon. read more
