Herb is AMAZING at what he does, he provided clear and concise emails that helped me figure out the kegs I wanted to use for my wedding, the wine, and he even provided other items such as ice, tubs, soda, and water. He was great to communicate with, wonderful to work with, and such a nice person. After all of the stress from other vendors and my venue it was such a relief to speak with him and receive amazing informative emails with all of the information and options laid out so it was easy to choose. I've been to Total Wine & More twice, and both experiences have been top-notch. Last year, I…read morevisited to grab a bottle of wine from one of my favorite rock 'n' rollers' brand, and the store had it in stock. This year, I called ahead to ask about wine and beverage cups, and was pleasantly surprised to speak to a real, live person who not only confirmed they had what I was looking for but also told me exactly which aisle it was in. It's refreshing to get that kind of personal touch, especially in a place that might seem like just another big-box store. Located on the south side of West Towne Mall, it's easy to find, well-stocked, and the service goes above and beyond. I'll definitely keep coming back!

Total Wine & More really does a good job providing a wide array of products for a great price. I've been here several times and never leave disappointed (except for one thing that I'll mention later). Their employees know their products and can make smart recommendations based on what you're looking for. Samples? Yes please! At one visit, an employee pointed out a good whiskey that he thought I'd like. Lo and behold, it was one of the samples, so I was able to "try before I buy". I like that. On another visit, I was lured into a back room for a tequila tasting. Not liking, I tried to decline, but was convinced to give them a try - and I was not disappointed. Also, I like how at the front of the store they have racks of "airplane bottles" - small "samplers" that you can buy to try out various products. Again - I like this idea. It was a way for me to try peanut butter whiskey without sinking too much into a larger bottle... So yeah - they're the big guy on the block, but I like the service they provide, and the deals that I get. I would LOVE it if they were able to track down a bottle of Thomas Tew rum. This is a personal goal of mine (I have my reasons), but I understand they are a small brand only found on the east coast. Someday...

Riley's is my choice of Madison-based liquor stores. There's nothing wrong with others, and I…read morepatronize several, but RIley's is hard to beat. Aside from their incredible selection, they bring in a lot of private barrels of whiskey that you're unable to get anywhere else. The prices are very fair, not the cheapest in town, not the most expensive. The staff is very friendly. One of the great things about Riley's is their allocated lottery system. You don't have to be "in the know" to get hard-to-find whiskeys. You sign up on their email list, they email you when an allocated item is in stock, and you choose if you're interested or not. If you're interested, you're entered into a draw, and if you win, you get to buy it. This is a much more fair deal than other stores, where I've simply been told, "We have some long-time customers who will get that, you won't." Located a few blocks from the UW, this is a must-visit store. Don't forget what many do - there's an upstairs with a lot more than what's on the main floor. Cheers!

I stopped in to Cork N' Bottle while visiting Madison on a weekend getaway and I will say I was…read moreinitially very impressed. They have a great stock and I believe the employee who was working the day I stopped in genuinely care about me as a customer and my business. I am looking a a specific, rare spirit. Cork N' Bottle's website boasts: "We were established in 1960, so if you're interested in it, we've probably seen it-- whether it's a rare bourbon, limited-edition run from an obscure brewery, or a small-production wine from a tiny appellation in the middle of nowhere. We're passionate about what we sell, and we're dedicated to curating an interesting rotating selection of delicious and sometimes hard-to-find beverages of all sorts. Want a special order? We're your store." So I decided to stop in and when I did, the employee I spoke to was very kind and gave me some tips about how I might find it and suggested that I call on Monday to speak to the employee who handles purchasing for this type of spirit. When I did, the employee I spoke to on the phone was incredibly condescending. It doesn't bother me that the store doesn't have the spirit in stock or the ability to specifically make sure I get a bottle. What bothers me is that the man I spoke to on the phone made me feel stupid for even asking if they may have some come in stock. I understand certain spirits are really hard to come by and it can be frustrating dealing with these type of requests if it's something that is in high demand, but it is exceptionally poor customer service to ridicule someone for asking a question when the website specifically boasts of the business' ability to help find rare bottles. All that being said, they do have a nice selection and the employee I dealt with in the store was delightful. I would consider going back for simple shopping as there didn't seem to be high mark up on things that tend to be harder to come by, but I would not ever ask for assistance from staff again.
