Bristol's biggest library, though that doesn't mean its huge, has all you would expect. They've got…read morebanks of computers (that get filled up with students from City of Bristol college), obscure local archives, and a comprehensive fiction section. Unexpected bonuses include a wonderful room for working in upstairs, with rows of wooden desks. Silence reigns in this part of the library, and if you need somewhere quiet to get some reading done in the middle of the city, you can go here without having to buy a cup of coffee. They also have a good sheet music section, and a range of CDs and DVDs on offer - no need to go and pay at Blockbusters. A say 'in this part of the library' because its not necessarily the quietest of places. Keen on enticing the entire community, the kids section usually has a toddler screaming. I don't say this critically, libraries are better places when they're a bit lively, but bear this in mind when visiting. There's plenty to choose from here, and they have a catalogue that links up to the rest of the area, so they can order stuff in for you. If you visit for the first time remember to take along a utility bill so they can let you borrow. Bristol Central Library offers everything you'd expect and a few things you wouldn't in a friendly, convivial setting.

The downstairs houses most of the non fiction material, and also has a small cafe/eating area, where you are also allowed to eat your own food. Upstairs is the reference section and main computer hub. Make sure you book an computer from the host one or you won't be able to log in. The library is pretty large, but just accommodates the amount of people it is required to, and can get pretty busy during the day - I too have been one of those printing out CVs and clogging up the photocopier. The staff here are really friendly and accommodating - they'll help you find exactly what you need to. Don't be afraid to ask!

I was sure that prices hadn't risen in line with my increased bill and wasn't aware that I had a problem, so I rang to check the reading and ask their advice. I was very pleasantly surprised by how helpful the person I spoke with - on their general phone number - was. Without my even asking for such detail, she quickly analysed my daily usage and compared it both with my previous charges and average use. The results put my mind at rest. I was reassured and happy that I wasn't being wasteful and that my usage and charges were reasonable. Five stars for customer service, courtesy and good communication.

I've found their call-centre staff okay and I can pay my yearly fee in easy monthly installments. Only very rarely has there been a problem with water supply to my flat. One can use their automated payment option over the phone by debit card when the call-centre is closed. Nobody likes paying bills, I suppose, but I think the benefits of privatisation exceed the drawbacks, I like owning my flat and pipes need to be paid for.

Baddock is the best choice to put down when you get to Bristol for the following reasons: 1. It is big therefore there is always something going on and it will be easier to make loads of new friends. 2. It probably has the best facilities out of all the halls: a squash court, and a tennis court. 3. It has one of the nicest bars, new big and cheap. 4. The rooms are nice- all reasonably sized. Enough said, just don't tell anyone i said it was a better bet than Churchills.

Perhaps one of the major downsides is the location, which is a good 45 minute walk (there's no decent public transport connections either) to lectures, and even further to most of the rest of town. Although I didn't stay here myself a good friend of mine did and while her reports aren't unfavourable as such, they're not exactly glowing. The facilities are outdated, the rooms are ugly and poorly furnished, but at least the social mix of students is (compared to many other Bristol University residences) fairly balanced. The bar isn't bad either, generally fairly packed with the usual cheap drinks. It's been recently redone as well so just about everything works.
Opus is a glass makers shop based on Chandos Road in Redland. It's a small shop, but it has a really good artistic atmosphere, and when I went in, although I wasn't looking for anything in particular, I had a lengthy chat with the assistant. They run glass making courses, where you can create an object of your own making under their guidance, which sounds like an appealing idea. They deal with both residential projects and large commercial ones - they've installed a number of stained glass pieces in a few restaurants and office buildings. This is a really interesting shop - just pop by for a chat if nothing else.

Well it survives and them some...the staff are extremely friendly and showed me their pieces. I imagine some of them would look exceptional in a contemporary kitchen or bathroom. The colours are vivid and you know that you are getting something unique as all the pieces are made lovingly by the two owners and the two owners alone. This is the sort of local business that deserves your support, so go on the website, have a browse and start looking at that dingy bathroom that could do with a bit of decorating!

But I really do go there as much for the ambience and cosy feeling of a family business which supplies just about any timber product you could ever need and always at a very reasonable price. It's easy to get lost among the huge uncut logs and piles and piles of timber which leave you wondering to what use they might be put. The staff are wonderfully cool and very knowlegable and especially helpful. Wel worth a visit- if only to wander around the yard!

I have to say that I would still rather go to Cabot Circus rather than Cabot Carpets however, if you do need a carpet at least at Cabot Carpets you'll find a huge showroom and may find what you're looking for without having to go and compare in lots of other shops. A man from CC's came and measured up our office space, and rather than try and sell us a more expensive carpet, pointed us in the direction of an equally good cheaper one - it's a shame not all salesman aren't like that!

I had been thinking about changing carpets for a while as mine had gone past their sell by date. They have a good range of carpets from wool to synthetic - the staff are very helpful. There is the normal I do you a deal - type talk - and they did. They came to measure my property and quoted. The price was fair and included installation. The installation was done extremely well and I am very pleased with the result. If you are looking for carpets - Cabot Carpets in Southmead might be worth considering.
