Hmmm, I know I've had better. All I could find that sounded pretty good is Nachos Supreme. My husband got tostadas and thought they were ok. That's it. I'm more of a wet burrito, enchilada kinda girl but cannot get that at Maggie's. I guess I don't know what authentic Mexican food is as it all tasted pretty bland. We loved the Alma Latina on Division but since that's gone we now go to El Burrito. It was worth checking out Maggie's though because you never know unless you try it. I just went there for the first time today after wanting to try it for quite a while. I had heard great things and was not disappointed. The chips and salsa were a good starter, not the paper thin chips that come from a lot of Tex-Mex restaurants imitating authentic Mexican dishes. We ordered a tamale plate with two large spicy pork filled tamale with rice and beans, and a beef cheek burrito with cilantro and onions. The tamale were some of the best I've had, full of flavor and great spice. Even the sides of beans and rice, which often seem overlooked and bland had a lot of flavor. My partner's beef cheek burrito was a bit greasy but tasted great. I can't say fore sure, but I believe the tortilla was homemade. For both dishes, chips and salsa, and two drinks it was only about 21.00, very reasonable for the portions and quality of the food. Best and most authentic Mexican food in GR, hands down. read more

Maggie's Kitchen may be nothing fancy, but that tells you they concentrate their efforts on making delicious and authentic food for a great price. Take time to read through the descriptions of the menu items. Many of my friends only ordered things they knew of or could see a picture of. The food is ok, but really expensive. Everything is ala cart. It is served on styrofoam plates with plastic silverware. The music was not mexican, just some local radio station. They didn't even have homemade salsa. I don't know if this place recently changed hands or what; but I was very disappointed. I spent most of the day driving around Grand Rapids visiting as many authentic mexican in town trying one taco at a time. Maggies was my first stop. Whoa. I had the barbacoa torda. Wow was it fantastic! The meat just melts in your mouth. Very fresh avacoda and the bread was fresh and delicious. We people of Grand Rapids truley are blessed to have a place like this. I was so amazed by what Maggies offers that I decided to stop back on my way home for take out. I purchased the el chenero corn taco (don't remember how to spell it, but was so incredibly tender and flavorful, that it truly does amaze me) and a couple barbacoa corn tacos. I also ordered the avacoda salad for takout and I watched Maggie herself make it! Thank you Maggie for bringing such a wonderful authentic place to Grand Rapids. maggie's kitchen is pretty good. they have the best/most authentic mexican food that i've come across in west michigan (i'm a california native and mexican food snob, kind of). the veggie burrito and veggie taco were both delish. although the red salsa doesn't taste great with the chips, it meshes perfectly with the burritos. the salsa verde also goes well with the burritos. i'd recommend asking for the salsa fresca if you're getting chips. hooray! read more

Do not go there unless you want un-authentic Tex-Mex, very average taste, no service, and small portions. The ambiance (none) fits the genre but I have yet to be this disappointed in any restaurant in Grand Rapids we have lived here for 7 months and visited here very regularly for 8 years before that). We lived in Texas for 14 years and became accustomed to good Tex-Mex and search for it in the North. There are many better places in Grand Rapids, from chains like On The Border to The Beltline Bar and several others. Or, you can buy off on the pseudo-authentic stuff they serve here. BEST Mexican food since moving from California. It's authentic and flavorful. I moved here almost two years ago (to the U.P.) and have missed authentic Mexican food. It's nearly impossible to find anything that compares to what we had in Southern California. We were in GR for an appointment and asked if there were any good Mexican places and this was recommended to us as the "best Mexican in GR". She was absolutely right!
