Visiting Jekyll, I was in need of extra baking dishes for Xmas dinner. Every year our rentals never have enough and it's not worth transporting fragile bakeware 800mi to cook one meal. The associates at Hello Goodbuy were not friendly, neither greeting us when we walked in, nor when I asked if they knew if they had any bundt pans. Everyone had a southern accent and was white. We felt seen as outsiders, as happens in certain places around here. Intended or not, they came off like that kind of place. There were a lot of clothes and other knick-knacks, and some furniture. It was organized but felt very cramped and things were outdated in a worn 5-10yo way, not a cool vintage way. I left after a look at a small section that had anything resembling bakeware. Not much for kitchen, and nothing I needed. I always appreciate the mission of a thrift store, but this one felt so fundamentally (unwelcoming) different from ones like Gather or Goodwill where I saw all kinds of people shopping, and I felt very uncomfortable.

Loved their Jekyll Island patch ($6) which is a fun souvenir and a way to fund the JI Authority stewarding the island. JI logo items are priced as expected for a pro shop/souvenir place. Shirts about $38, hats $25, etc. They offer fishing gear but it's more Orvis and less RealTree. Honestly in all my years visiting the island, I have yet to see preppy dudes fishing. True, they may head out from the dock on a deep sea trip, and club guests may need to pop in and shop, but the fisherpeople we have met are campers catching dinner, locals doing the same, or folks from an hour or so in all directions, coming with a cooler to catch a day's haul for a month's sustenance. I see where the Authority wants Jekyll to head for the dollars, but it's at the expense of the diversity and appeal to folks of certain economic demographics. But I guess if the Orvis set can support this shop then great (my husband did fly and reel fishing with plenty of Orvis gear, but in retrospect, it wasn't necessary to catch a fish). Pier Road Outfitters is a mix of JI souvenirs, JI logo active wear, and some basic fishing supplies. It is not as extensive as the tackle shop at Clam Creek, which is bigger, and caters a lot more to practical needs for all things fishing. Pier Road Outfitters is a handy stop to find a souvenir that is also high enough quality active gear you would want to wear as part of your wardrobe, so function-meets-style-meets-JI memories.
