beautiful fish head
Mina S.

my friends and i have been big fans of magasasa for a while now, so we were very excited when we heard they were opening a new location on amager! even though it is a bit further away for me, i was looking forward to trying out the new menu. turns out it concentrates more on seafood, though our favourite dishes are still available here. the dishware and room look more modern than the istedgade location, and maybe a bit bigger. we were shown to a separate room, which was very nice as a group of 6; we were able to have a conversation in the busy restaurant but could still easily wave a waitress over when we needed. we ordered out classic favourites of green beans and garlic, shrimp stir fry, dumplings, and squid stir fry. the new dishes didn't disappoint; beef in bamboo was tender and flavourful while the fish head in chilies was moreish and tender. i'll definitely come back soon, especially to try some of the whole steamed fish and the scallops with glass noodles.

The waiter is like an idiot. He just ignored the existence of us but served Danes pretty well.

Go-to place for proper Chinese. They do takeout also. Just don't order it online, their website sucks and they're fast even for walk-ins.

The staff were certainly keen to help us order on our visit, which was a bit irritating, but we were clear what we wanted and what we got was good food, slightly on the expensive side, but only what you'd expect for the tourist centre of Copenhagen. We ate decent breaded shrimp and fish, good mixed sushi, and an excellent 'dragon roll' with a single enormous deep fried shrimp as the centre piece. Beef udon was nothing special. Decent gyoza. Ask for the homemade chilli sauce if you like it hot. If you're in this part of town and want to avoid the real tourist traps, this is a good option. Total cost for 4, including half a bottle of good Alsace riesling, about 900 krone.

I have also experienced opulent dim sum in Vegas with luxious ingredients. With a 119 DKK for 4 pieces of dim sum I was expecting Vegas quality and luxury. What I got was yes the best siu mai I have tasted in Europe (only other comparison was in Barcelona), but only mid anywhere else. We also ordered some Gaozi veggie which tasted super oily (not worth it). The stewed beef soup was good as well as the fried tofu with vegetables. If you go here, order from the sides, rice & noodles, and wok & pot of the menu. Boycott the dim sum sections entirely. I can't imagine living here and tolerating the price gouging. I went somewhere else for dim sum the next day. The siu mai was not as good (not less by much though) but I was also able to order the har gow and chicken feet plus a beef noodle. Go somewhere else for dim sum.

In Copenhagen for only 2 nights on business (having never been here before) and I'm a little…read moreashamed to even be reviewing Fu Hao. My intent was to avail myself of all of the local Scandinavian food specialties to immerse myself in the culture of it all. On night 2, I couldn't take another meal of under-seasoned fish or rye bread. So, I did a search for ABS food (Anything But Scandinavian) and Fu Hao popped up. Like moth to flame, my dinner fate was sealed. Within 1 block of the central train station, this will be within walking distance of anyone staying around city center. It is on a quiet side street and has a fascinating mix of old Euro cement architecture with pictures of their dim sum menu on the windows. Around the area is a Little Asia neighborhood sporting a mix of other restaurants such as Thai and Japanese along with several Asian grocery stores. There were numerous bike food delivery people in and out of the place picking up while I ordered take away so they do a brisk take away business but the place was also completely full with patrons, both apparent tourists and locals alike with several tables of local Chinese patrons represented. It was so busy that when I stepped in to order, a woman got up from a table, took my order and sent it to the kitchen and later told me she doesn't even work there but she was there for dinner and knows the shop operators so well that she jumps in to assist them when they are in the weeds. It is that kind of place. She took my order, told me some history (the restaurant has been there operating for over 30 years) and then sat back down to finish her meal. That was a pretty awesome interaction. There is a full bar set up squeezed in above the cash register with a prominent Carlsberg beer tap, the obligatory waving good luck cat toy, and small Danish flag on display but no bar seats. The inside is small and compact, perhaps with enough tables and seats for up to 50 people all in. The menu had a full selection of dim sum offerings including some things I was surprised by such as tripe as well as pretty standard offerings you would find in most Chinese restaurants. The latter is what I would expect. The former is what impressed me as I would not think that full scale dim sum would be a hit with the locals (maybe they get sick of under seasoned fish too) but it must be and kudos to Fu Hao for being able to offer it so far from the motherland. The food was tasty and comforting to me. The dim sum is quite serviceable and I read the negative comments from others related to use of MSG by the kitchen. My answer to that is that MSG (stands for "Makes Sh*t Good") is a traditional and basic seasoning used throughout Asia. So while some disapprove of it, without it there is a degree of inauthenticity and that is a little like saying you are an aficionado of Chinese food but don't eat rice. It's incongruent. I found the food here to be pretty authentic which says something from the middle of Scandinavia. Copenhagen has a lot going for it but, in my opinion, world class native cuisine may not be on that list. Thank goodness though that they have Fu Hao (and other places like it) to keep their dining scene international and interesting. Would I eat from here again? Of course.

I tried the 7 course journey so I could experience a lot of different dishes. The dollar is relatively strong right now so the roughly $100 inclusive price was quite reasonable, IMHO, given the venue, service, and quality. Wine pairing is available for an additional price. When you order the journey you get little extras and amuse bouche to start, which is nice. The tuna sushi situation with coconut sauce was delicious. The extra dish of minced scallop neck on the half shell was served on a lovely bed of washed beach treasure like pretty stones and shells. The turbot curry was quite outstanding in flavor. Not everything is perfect, though. A fried mushroom dish was very tough (impossible to bite through) and soggy with oil (likely fried at too low temperature). The level of umami is very high in every dish, where an occasional choice with something acidic or bright would break up the sameness. There was a quite nice Thai fish soup with chiles that was exactly right to switch up the palate, so they are definitely capable of making minor adjustments like that. The pork confit wasn't as tender as it should have been and the accompanying kimchi wasn't authentic at all. In short, I would strongly recommend it for drinks but dinner is probably better downstairs at Basalt.
