Buyers Beware, Avoid Mafes Mall. The custom sofas and upholstery are subpar with slow and delayed project completion times, hidden fees/ price hikes, poor communication, unrealistic promises and lame excuses for missed deadlines/ errors. Product quality was decent but unremarkable. 1/5 stars. I placed a custom sofa order and payed the deposit (50%) in December '24, I was given a quote for the project at $2750 with an estimated completion in 6-8 weeks. I reached out on 1/29/25 checking in on the progress of the sofa. I was told they were waiting for my approval and that the new quote for the project was $4800 requiring an additional deposit of $2400 (50%). I was assured that for the new quoted price the sofa would turn out perfectly to specifications, so I approved. 8 weeks later on March 30, 2025 I had received no communication, so I reached out for progress and was told 2 more weeks "because a few other orders were in front of mine." Fast forward 4 more weeks and I reach out again. I'm told the exact same story. I reach out again 4 more weeks later. I'm told "we just finished the projects in front of yours so it will be done next week." I follow up the next week and get the exact same story. It's like pulling nails getting any information or updates from these guys. After threatening to cancel the order they completed and delivered 7 days later. After waiting 6.5 months, on a supposed 6-8 week delivery time, I finally got my sofa delivered. On delivery they said teak wood went up in price and added an additional $100 fee to the sofa price on delivery costing $4900. Definitely a shady and unreliable business practice. Either the price went up and they neglected to say anything or they waited until the very last minute to order the wood and punished the buyer (me) for their sloppy/ delayed workflow. The quality of the sofa was fine. It looks good, it's not the softest or most comfortable but it looks nice. The quality is fine but not worth the price, the slow service is terrible, the communication is non existent. I would avoid working with Mafes Mall unless you're a masochist or a glutton for punishment. read more

A friend of mine had a really bad experience with this business, which refused to refund her deposit when she changed her mind about getting a table and chair set. Not only that, but upon trying to communicate further with the business, they misogynistically accused her of hysterical behavior and taking her frustration over a recent breakup out on them. Mafe's Mall is one terrific store. Looking for furniture after I moved, I found interlocking teak shelving / bookcases there, which would be perfect for the space I had in mind. I was reluctant to ask staff member Christine and owner Tony to move the items it displayed, because there were many. They were eager to oblige, to enable me to see all the wood on the two pieces, and verify their condition. It was excellent! That sealed the deal. When Tony delivered it, he noticed two matching chairs that were pushed to the side, since they didn't look quite right in my new home. He offered to consign them for me, and took them back to the store on the spot. Within days, he got the price he told me he could get. I've subsequently consigned a few more things and have confidence they will sell too. When I met Mafé and learned about her part in the business, I immediately hired her to do some upholstery work. It is still in progress, but having seen in the store the beautiful, well made work she does, I have complete confidence that it will be exactly right and just as ordered. When folks have stopped by to see my new place, and they see what I found at Mafé Mall, they always ask for contact info. Christine, Tony and Mafé are all a pleasure to work with, so just as I have recommended them to friends and family, I highly recommend Mafé Mall to you as well, with no reservations at all. read more

Watch out, Tony is a scam artist and extremely volatile person. We ordered two sofas to be made at the end of June. We were give an 10-12 week window for completion. In late August I called for an update and was completely ignored. My husband then called the store and was assured they'd be ready in a "couple of weeks." A few weeks later we called again to see how they were coming along and he Tony gave us the run around and made it clear he had no idea who were were or what pieces we had purchased from him. This is week 12. We have heard NOTHING so once again we reached out, this time Tony gave us the same canned answers as before and it was abundantly clear he knew NOTHING about our order. He told us they were down three people and it was just him and his wife doing the work. I asked for pictures and he said he couldn't provide them. He told me the earliest I would get the sofas was by Thanksgiving. I told him this was unacceptable and he lost his ever loving mind on me. Screaming hysterically shouting that it was "all about me" and when I tried to point out that all he'd needed to do to was let us know what was going on, he told me to "save it." DO NOT waste your money or your time on this place. Edited to add: Tony DID give us our deposit back on the furniture. He also messaged me repeatedly on Facebook the next day telling me how rude and unfair my review is. When I told him I stood by my review he responded by calling me a "witch." He also text messaged my husband complaining about my review and blaming me for his outburst. read more

I found an Ekornes chair in this store. It was listed at $540, but the owner said he'd sell it for $500. I brought it home and discovered the springs were broken. I tried adding padding and even sitting on a blanket, but it was just never comfortable. I eventually took it out and welded the springs - still uncomfortable. Obviously, it had been owned by a very heavy person who stretched the springs before they finally broke. Since this store sells a lot of Ekornes furniture, the owner knew the chair was broken when he sold it. And, since he does re-upholstery work, he could, and should, have fixed it before putting it on the floor. At the very least, he should have identified the seat was broken. When I went into talk with him, he listened, but kept picking up this small rubber change mat and when I finished, he said he was sorry I felt cheated, but pointed to the mat he had been repeatedly dropping which said no refunds, no exchanges. He did however, say he was willing to fix the chair, but I'd have to pay for that. That way he could profit twice from one broken chair. read more

Tony and Maria have a great place. They are also some of the nicest and most genuine people in Portland. They have a great little place in Milwaukie with an emphasis on Mid Century Modern. It is always clean, welcoming & with something in all price ranges. I've spent several thousands of $$ with them, and I'll continue to be a customer. Tony gives Maria all of the credit for being the artist who makes all of the creative magic happen. She is PHENOMENAL at what she does. She is currently working on another 2 upholstery pieces for me. She is just a pleasure to work with, and I always know she will produce beautiful work. She can turn nothing into a work of art. I don't know what the guy Jack T was smoking when he reviewed this company, but I laughed out loud. Aggressive & poor boundaries doesn't describe Tony at all, and I bet I've spent a hell of a lot more money and time at Mafe's than Jack. What a great place! Very clean, and great safety measures during the pandemic. The owner helped us out, and was very kind and helpful. So many unique items in this place! We ended up buying four counterstools at a perfectly reasonable price (really, quite a bargain) and we are SO THRILLED. I visited when I first moved to Portland looking for office furniture. I could not find what I wanted, and when I tried to tell Tony that I wished to look elsewhere for more pieces and would consider returning, he became very pushy. This aggressiveness turned me off from the store altogether, and I decided that even if a good piece was found here, I would not purchase it from Tony. Upon politely telling him that I would not be interested in buying from him at any point, Tony continued to be pushy and insisted that I give him my phone number. I did not. It was interesting to see Tony suddenly become so animated and interested in trying to force a sell when I had spent upwards to half an hour in the store without a greeting or an offer to help find something I was interested in. I would recommend shopping somewhere that: 1. Is more attentive to customers from the point they enter the store, and not half an hour into a visit, and 2. Is more respectful of a customers' boundaries. read more

Tony and Maria a.k.a. Mafe (pronounced Ma-Fay) are amazing! I just moved to the area and stumbled across a listing of their shop and decided to check them out as I was on the hunt for a couch. Tony helped me out and explained that many of the items in their store they make themselves and have the option to customize. He gave me some sample materials and wood options to bring back home and get an idea of what might work best in my house. After a few indecisive days I went with Maria to their build shop where I got to see what everything might look like finished. Throughout all of this Tony and Maria were both extremely helpful, kind, responsive and patient. I finally decided on the materials and was delivered my dream couch just a few days later (way ahead schedule!) They both delivered the couch themselves and I couldn't be happier! Now that I have had the couch for a few months and use it everyday I can attest to the quality of their workmanship. It is extremely comfortable and built of durable materials meant to last. I will definitely be back to do more business with Mafe's Mall and would highly suggest checking them out as they both have a "can do" attitude that is backed by their incredible quality of product and service. Be careful when purchasing from Mafe's...super scammy, rude, and poor craftsmanship. I was assured many times that my deposit on unfinished furniture was "risk free" and that if I ultimately did not want it or like the finished product that it was ok and he could just sell it in the store. Tony was incredibly rude and told me afterwards that they don't do returns, changing the terms on me after he got the money. In turn, I received poor quality chairs that were not all finished with a final stain, had water stains, paint stains, dents, and a missing cap. When I let Tony know about the flaws, I was told I was "quite dramatic" and he suggested ACE Hardware. After being told he was unwilling to fix the chairs, I was told that he was unwilling to fix them and told me to "quit nit picking" and felt the need to tell me that I am "a grown up and made a grown up decision." Mafe's Mall is a gem of a store. Full of treasures, especially well curated mid century pieces and lovely reupholstered chairs and sofas in tasteful fabrics. We recently sourced quite a few pieces for a client (I'm an interior designer) and when we went to pick up the piece from their shop, I couldn't help but walk away with a new side tables for myself as well. You know you've reached "Peak Mid Century" when places like this start popping up. It's a confusing jumble of mostly broken furniture, misattributions, overpriced nonsense, and completely out of place tchotchkes and bad art that aren't mid century at all. One thing that really sticks out is the bizarre Eames Lounger knockoff that they've had priced at $5,000 for the last 6 months. I mean, you can get a Vintage Walnut 670/671 for that kind of money. Apparently they are good upholsterers that make knockoffs of Adrian Pearsall sofas? I personally don't buy knockoffs, but I also happen to know that What's New furniture sells similar Made in Portland sofas for about half as much as this place. The only good thing is that you can occasionally find good deals here because the people don't know what anything is. Just prepare yourself for the weird used car salesman vibe from the owner. read more
