I was blessed to have been sent there by my parents "to straighten me out". It was truly, the best thing that ever happened to me... not that I thought I needed straightening out. St. John's created the environment where I could concentrate on the important on coursework and sports that I needed and/or enjoyed. We marched to breakfast, lunch and dinner. We marched to church (or were bussed to the church of our choice.) I attended for three years and it became the most important three years of my life. My Latin teacher taught me how to think and how to obtain my goals in life. I loved math, biology and physics. I was captain of the gymnastics team. It was an absolute positive experience. I graduated in 1959. I attended college (Engineering), then joined the United States Coast Guard. They sent me to US Navy Flight Training and I became a Coast Guard Air/Sea Rescue pilot for 7-years. United Airlines then hired me to fly for them. After 15 years with United, they brought me into upper management where I Worked and flew as a Flight Standards Captain, flying Boeing 747's around the world. I flew until age 60 (Mandatory retirement age back then), with over 20,400 hours of flight time. Thank you St. John's! You made that all possible. I have two younger brothers who also graduated from St. John's and they both were as successful as I was in adult life.

St. John's provided me with the foundational instruments necessary to succeed as a young adult. I took every opportunity for growth at the Academy and earned numerous scholarships for my freshman year of college. You will not find another military academy where half of the student body is international and the faculty truly care for their cadets. I still keep in touch with several teachers and classmates of mine. Dave and Bike's prior post on the school's curriculum and their own inability to succeed in college is entirely due to their indolent behavior and poor study habits. No student should have below a 3.6 GPA at St. John's. Academic resources are available for all cadets. I would gladly recommend the school to any student who has a desire to reach beyond his or her potential.

They have managed to get quite a few classrooms, media and other activity rooms into such a small urban footprint. We were there for a varsity basketball game and had a lot of fun. It was $5/adult for the game and they offered a variety of snacks at the concession stand throughout the event. The concessions were reasonably priced for everyone to enjoy. There was plenty of bleacher seating for the game. Home team and guest team were able to sit in designated areas. The cheer leading squads from both teams were entertaining to watch and lifted the spirits of their respective crowds. Reggie the mascot was not in attendance for West High and that was a little bit of a bummer. The kids like to see Reggie and get their photo taken. This high school offers top notch classes with great instructors. They have quite a variety of non-academic opportunities for our students too. Lots of clubs and athletic activities to get involved in. The graduation rate is high and the rate of students who go (and complete college level academics) is also very high.

What was cool was they had 3 football fields next to each other. Each team was practicing on the two outside fields and then moved to the middle field to play their football game. As they played the teams for the next game up were able to practice on the two outside fields. This game was not pretty but it wasn't expected to be. The East Side Sharks are City Street savvy whereas the Poynette kids are country bumpkins. Surprisingly Poynette kept up in the first quarter but it went downhill fast as Poynette player after player were hauled off the field with injuries. One East Side Shark body slammed a Poynette player right in front of me and I thought the kid broke his neck the way he came down and laid there. I heard him say he couldn't move his leg but it turned out to be a knee injury which is bad enough for 7th graders. The only downside to these "practice" football fields is that there were no score boards to tel what quarter it was or the score. I heard one referee state at one point that it was 2 minutes to half time yet it seemed like 20 minutes by the time it got there. But again, with all the injuries the game did move slower. At the end the score was something like 14 to 42 or more. Gotta love those youth football games.

I have high functioning autism and have trouble being in loud spaces, so I tried to ask my case manager to move to a more quiet class, and it took nearly a month just to get that to work out! and don't even get me started on the administ as they do virtually nothing to stop bullying other than "anti-bullying signs" and "please don't bully" messages. at one point, a special needs kid That I knew personally got beaten up to the point where they dislocated their teeth and got suicidal thoughts, and yet when the parent asked to move to a different school, the school administration and district weren't cooperating for weeks until they were bascially forced to do so. I could go on and on, but I'm gonna end it here: don't go to this school if you value your kids mental health. try monona grove or something on the west side instead.
