This was a lovely cinema and would definitely recommend coming here. Ticket prices were a little higher than I would've liked to pay, but still worth it for the experience and hospitality. Though it is not the largest cinema in the state, its theaters are more akin to old fashioned locations and give it a cozier feel. That being said, there is enough space for many guests without it feeling cramped. The staff were friendly as I purchased tickets and snacks, and gave me some information on the movies coming up. First time here since the remodel and new owner. Everything new. Looks like the exact same place just replaced with new. Consession stand looked exactley the same....but new. The men's bathroom kinda looked new but also looked cheap. My big issue now at this theater is that when you buy tickets the seats are assigned. The words and diagram on the screen where you pick your seats are very small and hard to see. It's a big turnoff not being able to walk into a theater and pick where you want to sit visually. The website is also not that great. You have to search for show times. They should have a tab at the top of the screen that takes you to showtimes. Two people in front of me were also complaining about the assigned seats. Just wondering where all that grant money went to remodel this theatre. Not sure this place will cater to the older crowd...shame read more

The seats are comfy, the screen is small by modern standards, but the staff is absolutely terribly. The snarky miserable kid at the concession stand was actually obnoxious. I showed him the QR code from buying the tickets only and he sighed dramtically and said "you scan it there" pointing at a small dark scanner to his right. Then chimes it with "you want concessions?" He rolls his eyes when I say no thank you. Doesn't tell me which direction the theater was either. read more

The Madison Art Cinema is no longer the gem of the shoreline. It's unrecognizable and I'm not talking about the interior. The movies they are showing are truly a joke. I'm so sad to see this change as are many of my friends. It was place we could frequent, and we did, and watch wonderful independent, unique, beautifully acted films. This has been a very nice theatre in Madison for a very long time. It's a great place to see a flick you won't be able to see in big theaters. The crowd is generally older so you don't have a lot of cell phones going off but may have the same amount of chatting - rather than girls giggling you'll have a lovely couple repeating what was missed to each other. They serve Pepsi not Coke and the popcorn is okay; but you can get a coffee here so it adds to the charm. read more

A cute little independent movie theater located in downtown Madison. A nice "date movie" theater because afterward you can take a romantic stroll through downtown Madison. The cinema itself is very small and only has two theaters. The owner is extremely friendly and passionate about art films and movies in general. Considering the general dearth of independent cinemas on the Connecticut shoreline, the Madison Art Cinemas is a gem for both the casual cinephile and the most hardcore cineaste. The theater is well run and the owner takes great pains to make sure that the theater's programming is the cream of the "indie scene's" crop. The screens are comfortable and small. Due to their limited size there isn't a bad seat in the house. Concessions are typical, though there is an emphasis on "gourmet" coffee, which has never disappointed me, and other more "up-scale" treats. Parking has never been a problem; There is a sizable lot in the back, and there's usually parking on Route 1 in the evenings. It is easily accessible from I-95 and Route 1, and sits in the quaint "downtown" strip of Madison. If you're interested in movies that cost less than $30 million, that strive to be not just commercial, but thought provoking, there's no where better on the shore than the Madison Art Cinemas. I would also like to note that I currently live in Los Angeles where we get 99% of all releases in the United States. I am always amazed when I come back to the Shoreline to see that the Madison Art Cinema is always playing the most cutting edge film that you would otherwise have to drive to New York (or, to a lesser extent, Boston) to see. I cannot recommend it more. read more

This place is a great addition to the shoreline and is always a place to stop by when I am home for the holidays. You can always catch a great movie that you can't find in mainstream movie theaters and it's cozy and small. I always feel like I am right at home and the people working there are always incredibly nice. In addition to the typical movie treats like popcorn and candy you can also get fresh baked goodies (try the oatmeal raisin cookie!) or a cup of cappuccino or cafe au lait. Prices are a little on the high side, but you are paying for the "artsy" experience and I feel like I am actually supporting a business that is contributing to the culture of this small beautiful town. Plus it's surrounded by some great little shops and restaurants so it makes for a good date spot. Bottom Line: Skip the big blockbuster at your normal theater and try something different here..it will be worth it. read more

The mega 12-cinema movie theatres don't hold a lot of appeal for me as they are usually filled with teens who text through the entire movie. Great little theater. Only two screens but it plays terrific art-house and indie films which we don't get too often outside of New York. The theaters old design may bother most of the younger crowd who have grown used to the high sloping theaters, but the theaters narrow, gentle slope gives you the true audience experience that newer theaters have lost. The snack bar has a great selection of ordinary snacks at reasonable prices, as well as some out of the ordinary baked goods and cafe style beverages that you won't find at the chain theater. Overall an enjoyable experience despite the older projection systems and lower quality sound when compared to the larger cinemas. But made up for by the great location on Main Street in Madison. read more

This was one of the only theaters in CT screening the movie I wanted to see. I went in the morning on a Saturday and the movie was less than $10. Can't beat it. Although it's only a two theater cinema, the screen size was big enough to enjoy the movie and the image and sound quality was great. Parking wasn't a problem. There is 3 hour parking right outside. The location is also great. I had time to browse the local shops and grab coffee before enjoying the movie. read more

I love this funky little theater with a tiny cafe and engaging art adorning its walls. Oh, did I mention that it boasts the best "cutting edge" and foreign movies as well? It's absolutely my favorite cinema in the area. After parking on the street or in the back lot, I always opt for the bargain matinee if I can. Even if I can't, I'm aware that my money is supporting a small business with a wonderful mission to provide the community with films that rivet, teach, enrich and tickle. I enjoy their cappuccinos and an occasional gourmet cookie, but I *really* enjoy their state-of-the-art sound and the overall lack of chatting/cell phones. And because the theaters are small, you're guaranteed a great seat wherever you choose to sit. I find it more charming, accessible and calming than the Criterion or Cine 1-4 in New Haven. Even if you don't live in the area, it's worth a special trip. read more

A great old-time little theater with great sound. They run wonderful films that you mostly won't find in the mainstream theaters. The guy who runs it is a film buff and the films he chooses are usually top notch. We love to catch an early show and then head over to Cafe Allegre or drive to the Wharf to catch a bite at the bar.
