I wish there had been more opportunities to smell -- although maybe not all of the scents were pleasant -- of the original fragrances you hear about during the tour, but I enjoyed trying the different perfumes in the shop. The sales clerks' high-pressure tactics somewhat lessened the relaxed feeling, but overall, I really liked it, and I did purchase a few delightful perfumes. It was pretty cool to walk around and see the displays with vintage perfume bottles and vessels. At the end of the tour (which was free) you get dumped into a gift shop (go figure). I can say that Nose has figured it out and my shopping experience all 4 times has been spectacular. Their prices are fabulous and the fact that they include all the taxes and fees is awesome because then you are not left wondering exactly how much extra you will be charged as I still have not figured out how to know exactly the fee you get charged through customs. They have a great selection of fragrances and have some harder to find niche brands. In addition to excelling with pricing and shipping, they also include a large selection of samples that you can pick and depending on how much you spend, you can get other gifts with your purchase also. Lastly and most importantly, their customer service is TOP NOTCH. Not that I have had many problems but like anything in life, there are issues from time to time especially with customs and when I contacted customer service they were super friendly and quickly responsive. Honestly there just are not enough good things I can say. They have become my number one choice for international shopping and they have been so good and spoiled me that I do not want to use anyone else. Detaille 1905 is an "established" yet small fragrance store. As one might imagine, the store was…read morefounded in 1905- which makes it ~112 years old. But they haven't expanded like Diptyque has. I love Diptyque and many other fragrance shops, but they exist in the US and their candles are same whether in US or Paris. I was hoping to venture on a uniquely French olfactory experience. I found Detaille because it happened to be a couple of steps away from the apartment that I was staying in. I went into the store out of curiosity. Their fragrances range from €45 (30ml) to €125 (100ml), and I thought that their candles were particularly well priced at €45. I loved the fresh bamboo candle but ultimately got two of the Mimosa candles. (For Americans- mimosas are actually flowers, not the drinks! I didn't know until then :) ) It is imperative to mention that the reason why my Detaille experience was as positive as it was is due to the shopkeeper, Ms. Celine's, hospitality. She was incredibly kind to explain everything and not at all pushy to buy. When I purchased the two candles, she was embarrassed that the recent summer heat had produced wrinkled textures on the candles' surface. She provided me a discount as a result- I didn't even ask for it. I also bought a 100ml vial of Akuri. I brought my sister to this shop, in our neverending quest for her signature scent. Akuri is sweet and fruity but very subtly so. We spritzed some on our wrist, went on with our day, and the next day went back to Detaille to buy the bottle. When you find a scent that you like, seize it!! They have a website but the store experience is infinitely better :) Also- they are equipped with Duty Free shopping. Here's another example of Ms Celine's hospitality- I misplaced my receipt which is required for the tax refund. I called her from England, and she asked me how I would like to receive my receipt. I told her email is fine, and she emailed me an invoice right away. This shop went above and beyond in service, olfactory tour, uniqueness, and price point. I would highly recommend a stop if you are a fragrance lover! P.S. Ms. Celine is happy to provide fragrance samples so don't hesitate to ask.

He made sure we experienced dozens of amazing and rare perfumes before choosing our absolute favorites based on how it worked with our body chemistry as well as the smell on the paper strip. I happened upon this store while I was visiting perfumeries in Paris and was overwhelmed by both the quality and quantity of niche perfumes in their store. You won't find any common perfumes found in department stores, but that's the beauty of this place. The employees are very knowledgeable and very kind and thankfully will leave you alone to discover perfumes on your own unless you need some help. I will definitely be back to purchase perfumes in the future and look forward to new additions. Some of the houses I was so happy to see were Olfactive Studio, Tauer Perfumes, Xerjoff, Roja Dove, Profumum Roma, Nassomatto, and The Vagabond Prince. You don't see those in stores everyday!

I ended up buying a beautiful individually-crafted tote bag for just under 16 Euros, marked down from 22. I love that the bag isn't a tourist souvenir, but more like a genuine, unique French tote. And so affordable! It definitely turned out to be my favorite souvenir on my trip to France, and I wish I had bought more! The store workers were nice and spoke both French and English. They even gave me a few Fragonard perfume samples with my purchase.

The person who "manned" the shop while I was there was super knowledgeable and hip. I ended up buying a perfume that smelled of ink, old books, leather, and smoke. Makes me think of a hard core intellectual's office at a university in the 19th century. Perfect match for me and, as a bonus, I doubt anyone will have the same perfume as me. Yay!
