Selection of liquors for tastings at Mad River Taste Place
Dave A.

Interesting little place. Not quite a deli, not quite a restaurant. "Taste Place" is a good description, because you can get a good little taste of various things here. I was there for lunch (after discovering another restaurant closed earlier than their posted hours), with my wife, her brother, and his wife. I got a tasting of the wares of the Mad River Distillers (good stuff!). The four of us shared two Plowman's Lunches, getting tastes of a wide variety of the cheeses that seem to be the place's mainstays (most of which I liked; as for the rest, remember, not everybody likes every variety of cheese), plus of course all the other stuff in the lunches. They were also quite generous with additional bread slices when needed to go with the cheese. If you're in the area and curious about the local cheeses or liquors, or just want some cheese (be it for a quick snack now or to have on hand for later), definitely check it out!

September 10, 2026…read more Dear Cabot Cheese People, Cabot Cheese used to stand for something: a cooperative in Vermont that sounded darn near utopian to me, with happy milk farmers getting together and making a quality product. Indeed, the product used to be great. I remember getting your cheddar that was crumbly and had the tang that only sharp cheddar has. I could count on Cabot in the past to live up to its reputation as an honest and delicious cheese. I have done zero research on the Cabot Creamery and I am not going to. Maybe the same farmers are still running the place. But somehow I doubt it, because recently I bought some Cabot Extra-Sharp Cheddar and it was about as sharp as a butter knife. And the texture? To borrow from Pete Seeger, where has your crumbly cheese gone? The texture was strangely rubbery--hell, your cheddar gives Velveeta a run for its money. In short, your product sucks. This proud company has gone down the drain of greed and B.S.  Do you think the public doesn't notice--that we just stuff our faces and never actually taste things? You might be surprised. If you replace the good with the mediocre, folks will eventually catch on to your scrimping. You really can't fake quality, try though you will. Cabot Cheese: You are a great disappointment to me. I shall never buy another Cabot product. And I am telling all my friends not to as well.  Sincerely, William Minifie 446 East 86th Street NY Ny 10028 whminifie@gmail.com

TLDR: A Cheese lovers dream. ___…read more On my trip to Burlington, VT I knew we had to stop here. I've had a few of their cheeses and absolutly loved them. This was actually the first stop of the cheese tour. Walking in, the place is more of an office, than a factory. Their production is done elsewhere. Out of all the creameries we visited you could tell this was hands down the most professional and polished opperation. The receptionist at the front welcomed us with, "Hey! You guys here for some cheese?" Why yes, yes we are. She told us she'd be right back and returned with the most wonderful cheese board I have ever seen. Amazing samples! Various cheeses, butter and creme fraiche She showed us a price sheet and we went a little crazy. We bought a ton of cheese, butter and creme. It was actually super affordable since you saved on markup of retail price and shipping. We had an epic cheese night with friends when we returned home and I made the most incredible dessert with strawberries and the creme fraiche. The only thing that didn't make it home was the ash rippened cheese, which was so stinky I couldn't risk it stinking up my clothes, but one of the most delicious cheeses you will ever try!

Very good cheese all around! There is no doubt that this creamery makes some fantastic goat cheese…read more This is especially true due to there being very few goat cheese options in my city of Pittsburgh beyond the standard supermarket brand. This cheese doesn't taste like foodservice. It takes like genuinely delicious artisan cheese. As far as I know, this particular location on Yelp is not open to the public. Maybe it was at one point, but newer reviews point to it being closed now. So I probably wouldn't recommend making the drive here just for some free samples, especially considering the cheese isn't expensive anyway. I was able to acquire some from a local Aldi for just a few dollars ($3-4, I believe). I was quite blown away. The cheese is so creamy and all around perfect. No grittiness, perfectly pure flavor that truly makes it feel like an upscale experience. This particular cheese is a dip, but I ate it straight from the container because that's how good it is. Plus, it's also quite light! 45 calories for 2 tablespoons, and around 250 for the entire container! I will say, though, it's tough to get your hands on this product sometimes. All in all, I highly recommend giving the Vermont Creamery's cheeses a try. The goat cheese dip is fantastic, and I enjoyed it straight out of the container. I'm sure their other products are just as delicious, and they make for a great gift, appetizer, or snack.

They also offer locally sourced honey from a small batch raw honey apiary called Hera's Bees. We were greeted by Judith's 3 dogs, what a welcoming! They wanted their ball to be thrown. One of the last reviews stated they were generally there 10-4 on weekends so we took a chance, and I am glad we did. Judith shared their story, invited us to check out the production facility just over the ridge and even go see the goats a few miles away at the goat creamery / dairy. I have always been a fan of caramel, but had no idea you could take it to this level of flavor. We bought the 2oz jar sampler packs to return home to Pennsylvania. The salted bourbon and Vermont maple caramels were my favorite, my wife enjoyed the cold brew caramel and cinnamon. We plan to cut up some fresh apples when we get home to enjoy of new found heaven and remember just how nice Judith was and how she shared a piece of her life with us. Vermont is a beautiful place!
