I was looking for something for my son to do after he was diagnosed with ADHD. He is a member of the Cub Scouts but I needed more of a physical activity. This was suggested to me so we gave it a try. He absolutely loves it so far. It gives him something to do with his hands and his feet and helps him focus on what he needs to do at that moment. On top of that Master Elliott also teaches leadership skills and focuses on manners and good behavior. With our current pandemic situation, this is exactly what he needed to boost his need for activity. read more

Macons is very involved with the learners in the class. We are fairly new to karate but at ever stage they are fair and able to teach my children. Is a bit costly, but like all sports there is a cost involved and all my children love it and it offers so much more than karate skills, my kids are learning life skills and self discipline too. read more

My son enrolled in the Little Leaders Class when he was three years old. He loves it! The instructors do a great job of making it fun while also setting high expectations for each student. As a school teacher and a parent, I love the self-discipline it teaches - especially at such a young age. My son's listening skills and body control have definitely improved as a result of these classes. I appreciate that Mr. Macon and the instructors often seek parent feedback and work to meet the needs of individual parents and kids. read more

EDIT 5/20/18 Received a call from Mrs. Sharon and she apologized for the inconvenience and stated we have received a full credit for their clerical error. I appreciate someone following up with us. We are changing our 1 star to 3 Star simply because they did call and apologized for the mistake and will be refunding. We weren't planning on leaving a review, but after this company fraudulently charged our card I wouldn't hesitate! We canceled our membership for both our kids back in March. We were not pleased with the program after 2 weeks and our kids dreaded going. After the first class we noticed the instructor (Sharon) would solicit myself and other parents into spending more money on merchandise or classes. It felt like their goal was to bring in money instead of teaching our kids, so we canceled with them March 20th. We recently checked our accounts and noticed that they have charged us $200 every month since March. I sent emails, text and even a phone call to the owner of Macon's (Patrick Macon) with no response from anyone in regards to our cancelation and being charged for our canceled membership. I have never seen such an unorganized and unprofessional business! Clearly you need to evaluate your policies and procedures (especially for the High Point location.) Luckily, our bank has refunded our $400 and will be pursuing your company. If you're looking to enrolling in Martial Arts save yourself the headache and do not go here! I wish I would've read the reviews for this location prior to giving them my credit card information! What a scam!! read more

I have been training at Macon's Martial Arts, Burlington location for several years now and love it! My confidence, strength, flexibility and overall health have improved. I began taking classes to get better fitness but have acquired so much more. Mr. Plummer is very talented, knowledgeable, and patient. Unless your pockets are lined with gold stay away. The little leadership program cost right at $1900 for a year. They get you to come in and tell you your getting a free Karate class and uniform. I learned the hard way nothing is free at this place. They have a salesperson that talks so fast before you know it your signing a contract for a year and giving them your debit card. There is so many hidden fees other than the $1900. Oh, I forgot to say you can pay everything up front and get a discount. But each belt is going to cost you an additional $60 and another $30 after you already paid for the belt then they tell you it cost $30 to certify your child to receive the belt. It's takes me longer to drive to class than the 20 minutes that they have class. All of the class time isn't spent on teaching karate. They even sign you up for a birthday party and give you a gift certificate for $225 but really can you do a party in 30 minutes go on there website after the 30 minutes the $225 is over and you have to pay for additional time. I mean really this is supposed to be Christened based but I think it's more about making someone rich. I really hope this review helps others in choosing where they take there child. I went to the High Point, NC, location and was so disappointed in Charron's PUSHY sales pitch! I was given a free trial class so decided to check it out. Prior to attending the class, I decided to search the academy and rates online. I found there was a Valentine's Day special of 6 weeks of classes for $69 which sounded like a great deal to me so I decided that if the class went well then I would have fiancé sign me up as my Valentine's gift. I had a great time in the adults' self defense class and was for sure going to ask for it as my gift! Then, after class, charron has my friend and I go to a back room to go over membership plans...everything went down from there!! She starts telling us about the plans and when I tell her it was just out of my budget at the moment (she hadn't even mentioned the special I had seen online) and that I would be in touch once I knew for sure, she acted as if she wasn't going to let me leave until I paid for something! She kept badgering me about how much money I had on me, if I had money in my car or if she could write down my credit card information then I could tell them when to start charging me. It got so bad that my friend jumped up and walked out! In my effort to be nice and keep calm, I informed Charron that I am getting married in 7 months and buying a house so money REALLY is tied up, her response, "I'm buying a house too so?" and gave me the most condescending look. I HAD to walk out at that point! The most disappointing part is that there is an awesome special going on, I had a blast in class then Charron ruined the entire experience! I nor my friend will not be going back.` read more

The "classes" are not at all what was expected. A 5 minute warm-up with 10-15 minutes of actual karate practice followed by 10 minutes of a "lesson" and then the children who are not in the leadership program get to watch the other kids actually do karate for the last half hour of the hour long class. I was hoping that this would be a good activity for my son to be motivated and to increase his self-esteem but it only made him feel bored and dreaded going every week. I even paid for the 6-months in advance, but now I regret it. The money was taken out of my account quickly, but once I submitted (in writing) that I wanted to withdraw him from the classes, I was notified that it would take up to 90 days to receive a refund. It has been a full 90 days now - we cancelled back in July - and I have yet to receive my money back. This company claims to be based on Christian beliefs, but they seem to be all about the $$$. There leadership and karate program is excellent! My son is in there after-school program and his confidence, self-control and leadership skills have vastly improved since starting the program. And he's learning karate too! I am also in there leadership and karate program and am working towards my black belt (May 2017!), as an adult it's a great workout and a great way to learn self defense skills. read more
