I've always held MacNeal Hospital in high regard. Years ago, the level of professionalism here was outstanding, which is why this experience has been so disappointing. I've been in the emergency room for about two hours with my 80-year-old mother, and unfortunately, the environment has been far from what I remember. Staff members were openly using profanity and engaging in inappropriate conversations within earshot of patients. It was uncomfortable and honestly disheartening--especially for someone of my mother's age to have to sit and listen to. I've been coming here for over 40 years, and I never expected to see such a decline in professionalism. As someone who works in the medical field, I understand how demanding these environments can be, but maintaining a respectful and appropriate atmosphere should always be a priority. This experience was upsetting, and I truly hope this feedback is taken seriously. I will be following up further regarding this concern. I guess this is the quality that Loyola is now, such a disappointment. The only thing I can say positive is the chaplain who came down with kindness and compassion. read more

I had a very disappointing experience at MacNeal Hospital. The wait times were extremely long, and it felt like there was little communication from the staff about what was going on. I understand hospitals can be busy, but basic updates and attention to patients go a long way. The level of care I received did not meet expectations. It felt rushed, and my concerns weren't taken as seriously as they should have been. Overall, the experience left me frustrated and uneasy. I really hope they improve their patient communication and overall service, because this was not the level of care anyone expects when going to a hospital. read more

I arrived at the ER on 4/01/26 around 8:45 with complaints of hypertension and dizziness. I was really anxious thinking I was going to have a stroke or heart attack. I was brought to the back triage area and sat in bay 9. From the moment I was there, the frequent intermittent shouting and cursing from the ER nurses and techs never really seized. As much as I wanted to record all of this, I just tried to remain calm, follow directions, communicate effectively to get the help I needed. The absolute worst nurse was the female who inserted my IV and drew labs. She is a reckless BULLY. She only confirmed my first name before beginning the IV insertion and I had to offer my last name and birthday because there was another female in the bay next to me who had the same first name. She did not follow proper protocol for SAFELY identifying a patient. THIS IS A CRITICAL ERROR IN JUDGMENT. And in case she did not initial the labs or document that she completed the IV and labs, just check the security tape for an approximate 5'7", 160-180 lb female with a "TRAUMA RESCUE" light gray T-shirt, dark hair pulled back in a large peach clip. This nurse was also the "ring leader" when it came to shouting and expressing how she did not like being lectured about being unprofessional. She was ranting to everyone who would listen and chime in with her. She knew I was in a wheelchair due to dizziness but when she wheeled me to the inner ER section to room #16, she parked the w/c at the door and rudely asked, "Can you walk?" I said, "I'll try" and took 2 large clumsy steps and sat at the foot of the bed to avoid falling. She immediately demanded, "Move up!" As soon as she could, she brought up the bed rail and walked out. And trust me, she did not forget to give me the call light. THIS IS NEGLECT. THIS IS ABUSE. How is she still employed? I have never felt like such a burden asking for help. She and many of the staff lack empathy and professionalism. Some words and phrases loudly voiced in the triage bay by her and the clique of toxic staff were "ass", "I'm not f****** coming in!", "F*ck that!", "What a bitch!", "You know, I really hate my f****** job...", "F*** her!" "Hey, where are we going for drinks after this? Lavergne's?" The patients awaiting discharge instructions seated near me were also subjected to this behavior. And each of these patients smiled nervously or looked very uncomfortable with the nasty comments and shouting. Not once did any staff member attempt to de-escalte the ranting. Hands down, my IV/lab draw nurse was the worst I have ever encountered. How can the Loyola/MacNeal system ignore her behavior? Who was in charge and chose to ignore the toxic rants coming from the staff? ***I do want to acknowledge Amelia, the RN who cared for me the rest of the night. Amelia has been a new RN in the ER for under a year and thank God she was my nurse! Amelia was kind, patient, empathetic, encouraging, and knowledgeable. She communicated effectively and offered support and updates throughout my stay. I overheard Amelia speak with her other patients and her outstanding qualities are not an act. She is the Real Deal. Was a great hospital! Last year I took my granddaughter to the E.R never again. I haven't forgotten how rude the girl was when I asked how much longer was the wait. She replied "you are not at Burger King to have it your way" that was so unnecessary. Every time I drive through that hospital it makes my stomach turn. Every time someone mentions MacNeal, I remember that day. Now I'm so hesitant about where will I take my kids next time they break an ankle. Horrible Discharge procedure[AGAIN!!]12-28-25.My wife was told she would be discharged within an hour,that was when she contacted me to come and get her.That was at 3:30pm.The nurse came in and said it would be a few minutes as he is running behind.He did not come back in the room until 6:45 pm.What the hell is that??When he was finished doing whatever he was doing,it took him 5 minutes to print out the discharge papers and bring them in.There is nobody else that can do that!??We had to wait over 2 hours to get something that took him 5 min.Completely unacceptable.Got no answers!!Does the hospital need our money that bad??Funny thing is,nothing will be done about it.!! read more

Since Loyola took them over the experience is worse. Had a procedure in the OR and the wait was horrible. The anesthesiologist did not come out and talk to you before like they used to (and Rush and Northwestern still do), and they didn't give any pre-sedation, just a bad burning of the propofol going in. Loyola Health is a messy pile of trash, but I cannot take it out on this hospital. My dad had exceptional care from the nurses and techs here. They and even some of the physical therapists are true heroes. The doctors and specialists are good at their individual jobs, though it gets frustrating that general doctors get moved around a lot and specialists are hard to get answers from at specific times. Everyone from the guy manning the booth in the parking lot, to the front desk people, to the surgeons truly wish you well with compassion at every step. Since my previous review, they have ended visiting hours at 9pm so I guess no one will be having those 3am loud parties any more. read more

When I was 14, I had visited the hospital for weeks because I had trouble breathing and walking. They brushed me off every single time and told me that they didn't know what was wrong but if they had to guess, it was probably asthma. I knew something was serious when I suddenly started coughing up blood I went back in a wheelchair my mom grabbed from inside 'cause I could no longer stand on my own. Everyone just looked at me as I waited hours crying out in pain just to be seen. When they finally called me in and did all the testing they needed, I waited until the next day to find out what was wrong with me. They told me "in two hours time, you would've been dead". I had blood clots in my lungs and legs, this is known as the "silent killer". They ended up sending me to a different hospital because they couldn't treat me there So much waiting had happened between Thanksgiving and New Years to figure out what was wrong with me. The doctors brushed me off every time I told them something was wrong and felt like I wasn't taken seriously. I would've been gone if they had waited an extra hour or two just to see me. My sister Minerva was dropped during her breast removal recovery ‍ she has a huge contusion on the back of her had and no one new how she got it of course they dropped her and her hair never grew back. My son got admitted there too and they discharged him before I got to the hospital and he was just walking around the street almost got runners over , they had giving him an injection to sedate him and they told me to come and pick him up but they did not wait for me. When my sister fell and she cracked her forehand open and she was bleeding to death she has to wait a long time that her skin dries up so the doctors her to cut the skin and left A high scar . I just had my first stay ever at MacNeal Hospital, it was the worst stay at any hospital I have ever been in. My room was very small, and it looked like it was from the middle ages, the nurses take their time when are due your meds, but you can hear them all joking and laughing out there in the middle of all the rooms. There was just two big what look like dining room tables with each nurses computers, in front of a chair, that's where all the laughing and joking was coming from. DON'T GO HERE! They do not seem to care how sick you are, you'll wait forever to be seen. Dropped my cousin off to get checked out. She had fallen and had a visible black eye, complained of pain on her lower left side and her left wrist was hurting. Well, after about 6 hours of sitting they finally sent her to x-ray. She was returned to the treatment room and waited, waited, waited for another 2 hours when she decided to check herself out. She told the nurse that she was a diabetic and hadn't eaten the entire 8 hours she had been waiting. The nurse responded with "just see your regular doctor"...no offer of a sandwich or anything. No mention of a doctor actually coming to see her either. WTH?! If I had see the previous reviews for this hospital I never would have taken her there. read more

Update: Finally since December 9, 2022 I received a very rude phone call just now from MacNeal/Loyola quality care office and told me the bill that I received for my father for $120 would have to be paid off or I would be going into collection. Let me remind everyone that my caregiver is the one who put the catheter into my father in the ER because they we're too busy. Collection here I come. Oh I'm asking is that to make this go viral becauy it was so horrible. 9 and 1/2 hours in the ER for my 87 year old father in pain with extremely low blood pressure. With the charge nurse and other nursing staff incredibly rude, unhelpful, and overall disrespect towards our families needs at this time. This is an emergency room, good money goes into this from his insurance and what he pays for tests and visits. We have been treated like 3rd rate citizens. The man suffers from dementia, has not been able to eat due to immense pain and having to sit in a wheelchair for 9 and 1/2 hours. The hospital is filthy, there is apparently no housecleaning on duty to service the facilities, and the charge nurse said they can't be gotten a hold of. The disrespect and lack of urgency for a blood pressure as low as 73/53 and in constant agony is a disservice and we were not taken seriously. In the event a medical emergency could have been prevented action may be taken from incompetence and negligence. Other families have been here for over 10 hours in the waiting room. I was in McNeal from Wednesday until Saturday. Saint Patrick day weekend. Everyday was an experience. I went in for a blood transfusion and a few other things occurred. I knew I was in good hands because God let me drive myself to the hospital and they were waiting on me with a bed. My primary caregiver has already arranged for my stay. I wasn't nervous but concerned. I knew God was in control and it was really nothing I could do in the first place. I was in 4505-1 Every single nurse and worker were more than kind. They showed a great concern for my wellness. I re Ariana and the crew did more than excellent work but they show compassion. From the adventures with the transporter to my many test at midnight was still Gods work. Although I don't make it a living of frequently vacationing at McNeal my stay was memorable. Casting aspersions at so noble an operation as Macneal Hospital and, in particular, the in-patient Psychiatric Unit where I was fortunate enough to spend ten days in March 2020 has left me without a choice but to be frank. Everything about this place run by Catholic Charities was like something a mashup of " One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest and the less cinematically represented real-life accounts of how Virginia Woolf learned to say "please" and " thank you" at one of, as she refers to these macabre warehouses, clip-joints, really where Manic Depressive's were left to sit in unheated rooms in the winter and in their own filth until after the plate of congealed bacon grease was all eaten up, every day for ten days, then and only then would the door to the chamber housing the " patient" be opened, and if "please" wasn't in the first sentence uttered by Mrs, Woolf, then Holmes, of the chain of Holmes' Homes which, mercifully, have been opened across the country to help with these lads back from the War with this despondency, "shell-shock" they are calling it, but I digress. I had ten of the most wretched evenings of my life in this SNAKE PIT- and I can honestly tell you with two broken ribs and an X-ray from Illinois Masonic to back my tale of woe up with empirical data, my ribs were broken by a homophobic orderly who took it upon himself to use very blunt and, in my humble opinion, anyway, EXCESSIVE FORCE, when he picked me up, body slammed me onto my mattress and pushed his knee into my rib cage, he stopped pressing his knee into me only after the 2nd cracking sound of ribs fracturing was heard and I turned white. So, without more drama, if anyone you ever cared about before they chose to make nothing of their own lives is in need of a seventy two hour hold or sone observation, please if you want them dead instead, send them to this institution. Really, you'll be glad you did. (I must tell the reader of this, however hellish MacNealwas, the food was marvelous- real food, everything from scratch, and if it hadn't been for those few moments (collectively) when I was able to smell real food, cooked simply but honestly, I might have just rest that the vicissitudes of life were too much for our tiny heads, and prayed on my rosary for divine intervention. I took my husband to the hospital in April 2022 he initially went in for a toe amputation which turned into the biggest mess that I've ever had to be involved with three weeks after amputating his toe he had to go in for another surgery to amputate another toe because they said another toe became gangrene. gangrene does not happen overnight my husband fell twice at the hospital due to lack of supervision I actually took my husband out of the hospital June 2022 and he was actually worse off when I took him out then when I took him in I would never ever recommend this hospital anyone for any reason I understand Covid but the care was totally unexceptionable I read more

My 82 year old mother fell and hit her head one morning and was taken to McNeal hospital. Check in and triage wait time wasn't bad even with a packed ER, however after she received an EKG, CT Scan, and X-ray we waited over fours hours for a bed and results that weren't revealed to us. Her head wound wasn't attended to during the entire wait. I didn't see any housekeeping personnel my entire time in the ER (2pm- 8pm) which could use some Lysol , a wipe down and some special attention in the bathrooms, especially with COVID positive patients in the ER. Overall bad experience at this place. I'm sure Loyola medicine and it's affiliations got a ton of money from the government which should go to updating the ER to decrease these wait times. read more

Stay away from this hospital. Do not have your loved ones attend this hospital for the following reasons. Lack of staff. Lack of knowledge and care from the nursing staff, doctor staff, down to the rude and unprofessional front desk in the emergency room. The lack of empathy and disrespect towards families is very unpleasant and unprofessional. Kicking out families and have them wait in the parking lot is down right awful, while they have many empty waiting areas within the building. Claiming that they are under construction or hiding behind the Covid restrictions that other hospitals do not have. We were asked at leat 4 times about the the medicine that our grandmother takes shows that no one is doing their job correctly. Please, if you value your loved ones health and safety. Got a referral from urgent care to go to ED. Waited for 3 1/2 hours in the waiting room amongst many other sick patients, including a man with a bleeding head wound. Once brought back did not get acknowledged for about 15 minutes. Luckily they did run tests to rule out anything catastrophic. I wish I knew the names of the staff members that helped me today so I could give a compliment to each and everyone of them. I was seen on 4/28/18 at around 10pm (Saturday night). I walked in for heart palpitations and rapid heart rate. The triage nurse was great because she actually LISTENED to my complaints and felt my pulse and acted quickly. They brought me into a trauma room and started an EKG immediately, an IV and hooked me up to a monitor in literally about 3 mins. There were 5 staff members in there including the ER doctor reading my EKG as soon as it printed out. The ER nurses explained everything that they were doing and calmed my nerves the best they could during this stressful event. Keep in mind, this was busy Saturday night but blood work, x rays, IV fluids and a CT were performed within 3 hours. Every staff member that I dealt with was kind, gentle and very knowledgeable, explaining everything in great detail and answering every question they could. The radiology technician offered me warm blankets and was so sweet. It shows that she is there for the patients and cares a lot. It's the little things like that that make you feel more comfortable in a hospital. I fully trust Macneals ER staff to act fast and treat emergencies. Thank you to the staff for being there for me during my scary medical experience and for giving me proper instructions for follow up diagnostics that I will need to help with my symptoms. My mother was brought there via ambulance on June 5, 2021. I wanted her to go to LaGrangeHospital because her doctor was there but she was non responsive and time was of the essence , she was taken to MacNeal because it was five minutes closer. I really didn't want her to go there but I agreed (I had two bad experiences 35 years ago and I didn't forget). This was the absolute best decision that I could've made! Although she passed away in the early hours of June 6th, the care she was given was phenomenal in the ER and then ICU! The doctors, Dr Darius Bartkus (ICU) & Dr Fanny Giron Galeano (ICU); Dr Ruben Cardoso (ER) were amazing, caring and thoughtful. The nurses in the ER: Jade Diaz & Maria Hernandez were outstanding, as well as the ICU nurses: Denise Carrera & Marlene Flores!! The dignity, love and care my mom received was as she would say: "Wonderful and awesome!!" I will no longer think MacNeal is not a good hospital. Since becoming Loyola/MacNeal, they have definitely turned around. I will always remember the incredible care that my mom received. Thank you to all the doctors and nurses that made death much easier to accept with your kind words and actions. read more

Worst hospital ever!!! I've gone twice both times I never got checked in. First time I had to make a scene about why she was calling other ppl that got there after us. I went again today and same thing, she called 3 ppl that got there after me I was sitting for an hour and nothing, I was getting up to go ask her as to why she keeps skipping over my name but my husband said let's just go! SO I should have known not to come back here after having my purse gone through and money stolen while I was in surgery back in 2021. However, I didn't anticipate another horrible experience and did decide to come here for a few tests to be done for my new employer, (drug/tb/physical). I requested off work 2 weeks in advance for this appointment due to them having no availability and stressed how I needed both of these tests done ASAP. I get to the office day of my appointment, I double check with the front desk nurse and ask her to verify that I was going to be getting all tests done THAT DAY, the answer was yes. I then let the nurse that was taking my vitals that I did have to use the restroom after having to wait 40 mins in the waiting room so I would like to do my drug test first for the urine sample, she then brought me a urine cup and told me to leave it in the bathroom for them to test. Dr. R Eckelkamp then came in the room and went over my physical, I did let her know that I had provided a urine sample for my drug test which she said and I quote "Awesome, perfect!" She filled out my physical form and even wrote on the bottom that I had pending drug test results and then proceeded to tell me that I did need a TB shot done and to come back the following day same time to get my results read. I come back the next day to the hospitals computer system down, the nurse read my TB results and when I asked about my pending drug results she stated that it takes 2-5 days to come back from the lab but to check my chart. I leave and check my chart and it says this DR ECKLEKAMP barely put in a drug test for me to COME BACK AND TAKE even though I was under the impression it was already done and she had written that results were pending on my form. I receive a call from the nurse who read my results and she said "We read your results too soon you were suppose to come back Monday." WHAAAAAT?! I said I would connect with the DR because I did as she advised. I then received a call from the Dr herself stating that there's been "miscommunication" and that I do have to come back and take the urine sample for the drug test that I thought was being done the day I was in office, never once did she mention that I had to schedule that separately and when I mentioned it to her at my appointment that I did provide the sample already, IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN STATED THAT I WASN'T GETTING THAT TEST DONE. The Dr seems incompetent and unable to do her job professionally, I am highly disappointed and frustrated especially now knowing that I have to make yet ANOTHER appointment after waiting two weeks and requesting off of work. MacNeal has done it again, terrible healthcare service - I wouldn't go here even if I was dying. Please pick healthcare providers that actually care & know what they're doing!! read more

My husband went to the ER for cellulitis in the face, yesterday morning. They placed him in a 23 hour observation to give IV antibiotics. By late afternoon, he started asking the nurses to tell the doctor his swelling spread to his jaw and neck. Repeatedly he asked to see a doctor or to please let the doctor know. The nurses kept telling him there is no doctor available after hours and over night when you're an observation patient. He asked when do the doctors do rounds, and was told 7 am. However he wasn't seen until 4 pm today. Once seen, they were "suddenly" alarmed at how much more he swelled up and finally got more aggressive with his treatment. I call bullshit that there's no doctor available in the evenings or night for observation patients. What are they going to do, observe him suffocate to death as the swelling closes off his airway because there's no doctor?? You mean to tell me if his blood pressure should suddenly be 220/130, "after hours" there's no doctor to notify?? On top of all this, I tried to visit him today with our kids and they said I can't bring the kids up. I can't leave them in the waiting room. I can't have them stay in the lobby, unsupervised. They can't watch them for 15 minutes so that I can drop off my husbands toiletries and personal stuff. They can't bring the bag up to him for me. They can't have a transport person or volunteer bring the bag up to him for me. All they know what to do is put up walls for me at every turn and offered absolutely NO solutions to my dilemma. They have no idea how to treat the hunan spirit or how to help alleviate stress of loved ones! At this point, if anything happens to my poor husband because of MacNeal-Layola, someone will pay-even if it's after hours!! I am beyond angry and disappointed. read more

Came in for diverculitis something i didn't know i had. I stayed here in room 4609-1 from 1/23/18 to1/28/18 was my discharge. The staff was amazing!! Very friendly and attentive. One person that stuck out was a nurse named jocy. Super amazing , came in with the most pleasant attitude! I couldn't ask for a better nurse to take care of me. Its people like her that make a patient better& a difference in the world, There should be more nurses like her!! Keep up the good work jocy!! Your amazing!! read more
