Since I moved here in town, I loved this place, but there was always this (very short gentleman) who hovers over people, and glares at customers. Today I thought I'd give him a chance and dealt with him. I said: "Hey! How's it going? I have some ammo to sell today." The boss looking busy with new inventory couldn't be bothered with it. That makes sense, maybe I could come back another time., I was going to ask..."Should I come back another time, maybe with different ammo, or were they just not taking ammo? Before I even had a chance to get a word out the (very short gentleman) interjected, saying: "HE SAID HE DIDN'T WANT IT!!!!" Then as I'm walking out, the lady at the counter says: "Are you going to pay for that?" Um, it's my ammo, my property. In the next few months I was planning on expanding on my growing collection of firearms. I'm getting rid of old stuff. Now, I'm going to make the drive to Cabela's/BassPro and spend Thousands of dollars. Thank the (very short gentleman) for losing business, there really is no telling how many people won't come back because of him. I honestly wanted to knock the guy out. (I kept that part to myself.) I've worked in Firearms Sales and you don't just start yelling at people for attempting to ask a very simple question. If you can't maintain your composure when dealing with customers, you have no place selling anything to anyone. (Business dealings 101) Other than that, the store and the staff are great. I went to mackey's recently to purchase a firearm.They have a Huge inventory of guns.I have been to other gun stores lately and their inventory is very low. I have been reading reviews online about the staff being rude but my visit was really good.The staff was very professional and really nice.I went to the same location many years ago and wasn't impressed with the staff that waited on me but that isn't the case now. I bought a .22 revolver from them a day ago, today I was going to clean it before my first range session. I found the pistol had no rifling in the barrel. I know this is not their fault, but when I called to ask about an exchange I was told I had to go through the manufacturer to get it fixed..... how am I supposed to get a firearm to the state of manufacture (GA)? I can't mail it or ship it! They could have done an exchange and then had the pistol returned for credit at the manufacturer. Didn't care about my problem at all. They suggested I fire it and see if I like it..... read more

I am thoroughly impressed! They don't lie when they call this place "the largest collection of guns in the country". I don't doubt it. If you're looking for some off the wall type of rare ammunition, they've got it. Want a .50 cal BMG just to feel cool, they've got em. Shotguns, handguns, hunting rifles, you name it they've got it. Even WWII era guns from every country for the collector connoisseur in you. They also have a number of different accessories for guns and a shop for repairs and cleaning. The only negative I had about this place is that they don't allow you to handle any guns if you don't have a purchase permit or concealed carry permit. That meant it was a bummer for me just walking around staring in awe. But no matter what side of the political argument you're on, this is a place worth checking out. Prices, by the way, appear high but as I recall the salesperson said that included tax. read more

I recommend Mackey's to anyone who is looking for something hard to get, or not carried in the mom and pop stores. They notified me when a particular shot gun i was looking for came in, and I picked it up the next day. Their prices reflect the taxes involved, so their price is walking out the door price. I found them to be helpful and friendly, as a matter of fact we talked for a while after I made my purchase. I am going there tomorrow to pick up a hard to find double barrel .410, they actually had it in stock. I asked them to hold it for a day, which they agreed to. read more

CUSTOMER SERVICE IS HORRIBLE!!! This place does have a lot of guns, it's unfortunate that they are way overpriced and you have to make your way thru the thick haze of cigarette smoke from the two seahags at the front counter. Their ammo selection is wide, but the hard to find ammo like 9mm, .22lr. .223, .40, .. is no where to be found, just like everywhere else. There were two older guys working in the store who were as rude as it gets. I drove over 60 miles one way to be nothing but let down. As I was leaving the two old grumpy guys were unpacking a shipment of ammo with .22lr in it. I asked to purchase a box and was told I would have to buy a gun from them in order to buy the ammo. In these tight times, this place wants to gouge us and rip us off. They might as well be a Pawn Shop! Do yourself a favor and STAY AWAY!!!!! read more

If I could give a negative star I would! I WOULDN'T EVER BUY A GUN FROM THEM IF THEY WERE 1/2 PRICE, THEY DON'T DESERVE MY HARD EARNED MONEY! Happened to be passing through town with my parents visiting from Texas and wanted to show them the place where my sister and I purchased an AR a few years back. We walked in and was greeted by the young girls at the checkout counter and asked where the handguns were (I'm looking for something compact to carry around with me). After them telling me and as I started to walk over towards the section, I get stopped with the question from across the room; "Do you have a permit?" Not really fully understanding what he meant, I told him that I have class on Saturday for a CCP. He said no, do you have a state permit? I explained that we were filling paperwork Saturday. The OTHER dude yells out (and I quote); " WE DONT SELL FOR NO INTERNET AROUND HERE"!! Well I thought about that for a min and with a puzzled look I ask; " What does that even mean?" He blatantly said very rude and nasty from across the room; " it means we don't open the cases if you don't have a permit because people come in here and WASTE our time and then buy a gun from the internet!" I just gave him a puzzled look. NOW, as we were browsing, I over hear the short guy tell another customer as they were hovered over a show case, that that's a nice pc but unfortunately I can't open the case for you right now." I was I little upset, that me and my parents were talked to like trash when we walked in and that the guy was over there talking to another dude very soft toned and semi-professional even whispering after a mentioned something to my parents about how nice he was getting treated without having a permit. I told my parents to come on, let's leave. On the way out, the girls said thank you and have a nice day. I responded with; "I will now that I'm leaving these rude people and said what I had just over heard and as I was approaching the door to the truck, the loud rudest guy of them all came storming out waving his finger in my face saying that guy has a penis that I don't know what I'm talking about! WELL, I stepped up to him waving my finger back in his face and said, that's why the other guy told him he couldn't open the dang showcase for him right now huh?!? I KNOW WHAT I HEARD AND I DEFINITELY KNOW HOW I WAS SPOKEN TO AND TREATED!!! Stopped at Mackey's on the way back from an Outer Banks vacation. I am a gun shooter and collector and before I buy a firearm I do my research. Yes they have an excellent selection of rifles especially hunting rifles. Less so for handguns. Neither category was any where near the suggested retail price by the manufacturer. Typically one can get a firearm for 50-100$ below SRP. While Covid and Biden have driven up prices overall, these were 2-300$ more. So find what you want and then buy it on the Internet read more

My husband and I drove an hour each way to look for and purchase a couple of firearms that are out of stock locally right now. The inventory is fairly extensive and the prices are higher than unusual but we did find two models we wanted to purchase. We didn't get served by the staff, who were engaged in conversations with themselves and a couple of other customers, so I got a basket, filled it with the shells I wanted and went to the register. I also told the lady I wanted to look at and probably buy one of the shotguns. Finally a man came over and, without even a simple greeting, Iwalked me over and I showed him the 20 gauge I wanted. He unlocked the gun, handed it to me and after inspecting it I told him I wanted it and wanted to look at a case for it. At the time he decided to ask me a question (not firearms related) that was insulting and condescending. My husband had come over, after finding a more expensive rifle he wanted to buy, and was attempting to answer the man when I handed him the shotgun back, wished him luck and told him we wouldn't be buying anything today. I was just taken aback by the complete lack of respect, much less customer service. The rude, arrogant employee cost his company over $2000 that day, plus at least as much in return business with things my husband wanted. We've found everything we want from other stores where we are treated well, we won't be back to Mackey's and I would not recommend them to anyone, especially women. I don't even think I would be safe in there alone. read more

The selection is great - if you can't find it at Mackey's you're gonna have to order it on-line as no one in the region comes close to their selection. The pricing is also convenient as what is on the tag is the out the door price - and if the stock number is a little old, they'll usually be willing to deal on the price. They also don't re-price, when the whole sale costs go up, so older stock number items will have a lower price than the same item that has just arrived. I am surprised at the negative reviews. First, I have yet to walk into any shop in NC and not be asked if I had a concealed carry permit or pistol purchase permit before being allowed to handle or inspect a handgun in the store. Per NC statute, it is unlawful for any person, firm, or corporation to sell, give away, transfer, purchase, or receive, at any place in the state, any pistol, unless the purchaser or receiver has first obtained a license or permit to receive such a pistol by the sheriff of the county where the purchaser or receiver resides. Given the wording of the statute, I suspect all the gun shops I've done business with in NC have interpreted "transfer" to include handing the handgun to you for inspection. That's a common legal interpretation of the word - and not just in NC. Second, I was surprised by the rude staff comments. I've done business with Mackey's for several years now since moving to NC from VA, and I've purchased several firearms over that period of time. The number of customers in the store varies at any given time - it's a large store, but in a very rural area, so it's not staffed at the same level you've find in an urban area, mostly because they'd all sit around bored most of the time and you'd pay a lot more to cover staff only needed for a few peak times. Consequently, there are times I've had to wait a few minutes for service, but I've never found the staff to be rude - even as a new customer. As a regular customer, I've found them to be very friendly. It's primarily a family run business and they've always struck me as being very good people. Third, I've also noticed the staff often have lunch at the same time. That's probably because they are a rural shop and any hot lunch needs to be ordered and picked up by someone who goes to Janesville to get it. The alternative would be to have half the staff working while half eat, but that just extends the time when staff are in short supply. The other alternative would be to just close the store for an hour over lunch. Personally, I drive 90 minutes to get there and I appreciate being able to go in and look around over the lunch break, even if I have a wait a few minutes to check out. I have no problem letting folks eat lunch. read more

I have always thought highly of this store growing up until today. I talked with an older gentleman and he questioned if I even had my concealed carry permit. As a woman, I like options and wanted to look at three specific brands to get the feel of every gun. After asking to look at the last gun he said, "are we just looking or are we going to actually buy because I have other customers to help." I had been with him maybe five minutes. This will be the last time going to this store, and I will recommend elsewhere. read more

1st and last visit, nice young man comes to show me the pistol I have requested to look at and no sooner than it touches my hand I rack the slide to get a feel for the gun a voice from behind says "that's enough" look back to see an old guy repeating "that's enough, he ain't buying anyways" well sir that is true I had no intention of buying that firearm at that time but I can assure you I don't care how big your selection is I will never spend a penny at your store. Worst experience ever today. I would give them a zero if possible. My wife and I visited with the intent to purchase two pistols today. We had a nice younger gentleman let my wife lay hands on one small gun. After that the service went down hill. Another man, would not call him a gentleman, showed me two guns and when I asked to look at third one to make my final decision he said he did not have time. My wife asked to look at a gun to make her final decision and he slammed the case closed and said "I do not have time. I have already been yelled at by the boss by spending to much time with people today. You need to know what you want before you come in here. Come find me when you make a decision". He locked the case and walked away. We were so shocked by this, starring at each other as the man seriously walked away. We went to leave and on the way out, my wife asked an older man standing behind the counter, if he was the owner. He said "depends on why". My wife told him, "because I wanted to let the owner know that he just lost two gun purchases along with holsters and ammo today". The older man asked how long the service guy spent with us which she replied, less than ten minutes. His reply was "we don't have that kind of time to spend with people. We are back logged with lots of orders." We both told him that he lost our business and that we would never could come back, and he said "so". As we were walking away, several of the service people along with the owner, were talking out loud about "how horrible we were for not knowing what we wanted to purchase and for asking for too much of their time". Ten minutes of your time, to look at a couple of guns, unacceptable. What has happened to customer service. We will never go back there again. We were willing to pay a little more for the guns as they are higher than average but not for the nasty service and rudeness. I will take my dollars locally for now own. read more

I am sorry to say that I have bought guns there before and it was not a particularly good or easy experience, despite me having a carry permit. I recently priced a gun that I am planning to purchase at 4-5 gun shops and this shop was easily the most expensive. I have found their staff to be rude, uncaring and arrogant. Easily the largest selection of firearms you'll ever see outside of a gun show. They have some surprising antiques (i.e. Springfield 1870 Trapdoor). However, the prices are way too high and the people are sort of snobbish. If you really, really know what you want and don't mind paying, then it's worth the trip. Not a good experience. Buying a used shotgun is not easy. So many things to look at and the sales staff is not all that interested in letting a person take their time and not make a mistake. My first time buying a used SxS and made a couple of mistakes. Did not think to try feeding shells into the chamber until got the shotgun home. Found out the breech would not naturally fully open and one has to force the chambers open enough to load and unload shells. Very little force is required but prior experience with SxS or O/U is this extra step is not required. Also once oiled I noticed slight movement between the stock and receiver. Lesson learned is when buying "on line" there is a 3 day inspection/return option which I "assumed" applied to in store purchases. Sad to say that is not the case. You buy it in store you own it. They do have a 30 day warranty where you bring the gun into the store to get things fixed. If you live close to Jamesville, NC this is ok. If one lives a few hours away this is not ok. At any rate lesson learned the hard way. read more

Let me be upfront. I don't know much about guns and honestly don't really care much to learn. But I know that Mackey's has the largest selection of guns and ammo this side of the Mississippi and south of the Mason Dixon line. Hyatt's in Charlotte claims to have 7000+ and Mackey's claims 6500+, I've been to both and I have to say on presentation and selection Mackey's takes the cake. They have a great way of showcasing the guns and are happy to unlock the racks to let you see it up close. Even though that's where my knowledge/interest in guns/ammo ends - I would highly recommend Mackey's to anyone with an interest in firearms. The location is great as it's right on Hwy 64 on your way to or from the beach. read more

At 1:30 pm asked to see a handgun. All THREE of the employees who open the gun cases were eating lunch. AT THE SAME TIME. I politely asked if I could get some help. The response? Word for word: "You'll have to wait awhile. We are eating." Thirty minutes later and they are done eating. Does someone come and help me? No. I go to find them and they have all occupied themselves with a bunch of other stuff. Outrageous rudeness. I was about to buy $600 worth of goods and I walked out instead. Yes there is a large inventory but I found the salesman to be condescending and he tried to sell me a used defective, but expensive handgun. He first presented the gun to me unprofessionally by handing the gun to me in an unsafe manner, with the slide closed and the magazine still in the weapon. But now I know why he did not open the slide... because the slide release did not work and he did not want me to try and close the release! The slide release did not close but he explained to me no problem just pull back on the slide to close the slide and I was like what? Then he said if you fire the weapon 1000's of times the slide will wear in and start working,,, and I was like what? The salesman also recommended taking the weapon to a gunsmith to "file down the slide release" to get it working properly!!??? Then he show me a second weapon , again with the exact same problem and again tried to sell it to me with the same explanations. Only my knowledge of firearms saved me from being RIPED OFF.. read more

This was the best experience I have ever had in a gun shop. All of the staff were a pleasure to deal with. They were courteous, helpful, and not at all condescending. I was traveling home from a weekend in the Outer Banks and only stopped to look around. It was so relaxed and enjoyable that I purchased a Mossberg Shockwave 590. While on a waterfowl hunting trip to Lake Mattamuskeet this past week and hearing of Mackey's, we drove the 60 miles one afternoon to visit the place. As a veteran, avid hunter, shooting enthusiast and avid gun show attendee I have been exposed to all types of firearms and Mackey's will make the day for anyone interested in firearms. They have the largest and most diverse selection of firearms I have ever seen, including most gun shows and have them displayed in such a manner you can browse the units close up on your own. There is no need to request a clerk to hand you a particular unit for inspection. As for the staff, we found them knowledgeable, friendly and willing to assist us. On the units that I am familiar with the prices, Mackey's seemed to be in line with most other dealers I have reviewed. Anyone who enjoys reviewing a vast and varied inventory of firearms or anyone seeking to purchase that special, hard to find firearm, would do themselves a big favor by taking time to visit Mackey's. From the smallest little pink single shot 22 to a 50 cal. Barrett, a 410 to a 10 gauge, a 22 to a 50 cal. handgun, it is available at Mackey's. I purchased a shotgun online from Mackeys and had it shipped to CA. The gun was advertised as NIB, new in box, but they forgot to mention the ding in the receiver and dents in the stock and forearm. I called to see what could be done about it and their reply was, ship it back at your expense and we will issue a credit. I always thought new in the box meant new without defects but obviously the gun had been out of the box and handled. I guess when their display guns get a little roughed up they put them back in the boxes and sell them on-line read more

Hard to believe the posts about bad customer service, because every time we go, we're are treated so well! The selection is awesome, they're willing to show you anything you want to look at and give you tips or help you find what you really want, and the prices are the same as what you'd find anywhere else for quality firearms. Went in today to buy a Kahr PM45, but so ticked off after I asked about some ammo, I decided I would rather spend my $800 somewhere that, at least acts like they appreciate my business.
