Alone for lunch today, so I walked a couple of blocks to the nearby Drogherie Milanese, where I…read moretook a seat at the bar. The Drogherie is part of a chain of "diners" here, and I use the word loosely for fear that some of my American compatriots might think of a Denny's or the local Yonkers diner as an analogy. For today, a glass of Sicilian red is excellent for the Tartare appetizer -- mixed perfectly with eggs, anchovies, and herbs. The Carbonara pasta -- homemade pasta mixed generously and indulgently with egg, parmigiana, pepper, and pancetta is out of this world. In my eager search for culinary disappointments in Milan, I have failed miserably, agai

Date of visit: May 24, 2025…read more We needed some supplies for our time here in Milan and I wanted something more than just a convenience store or mini market and the prices that go with those places that tend to be the opposite of the size of the establishment! This Esselunga is located within a mall, which I have to say is a new one for me, but the location was good for us to walk to and from our apartment and they had a nice variety of items available for purchase. Staff was nonexistent but we were able to find most of what we wanted without any assistance.

We got the last table outside in front of the restaurant - inside, it was a full house. Adorable place and friendly - if a bit harried - service. Well, I was right - this was one of the top two versions of amatriciana pasta we have ever had! And my carbonara was textbook perfect, too. We had ordered a veal Milanese, as well, but then the heavens opened up. Thankfully, we were full, as we had to abandon our plates and huddle under the awning with everyone else! They quickly filled up with rain. We cancelled the veal with plans to return. Marvelous!

Anyway the food was amazing, so we were happy. Recommended!

After numerous years of trips for business to Italy and Milan I finally found a place that can…read moreserve a decent cup of coffee and who actually cares about what goes into it. The people at Taglio offer a wide variety of specialty coffee from different origins and where one can select the method (V60, Aeropress etc). Execution is good but their own roast is good (don't get me wrong it totally beats anything else from Italy) but they also have coffee from other roasters. All together the coffee itself is a reason to visit but Taglio is so much more as they also serve excellent food. The pasta I had was a nice example of well-made uncomplicated food. They are also a deli so sell a lot of charcuteries and cheeses as well as other food items (tea, coffee, beverages, granola etc) The service was nice, friendly, mostly English speaking and fairly fast and they also have free wifi (however with mandatory facebook login) so a place I will visit again. Only minor drawback would be the price level - dinner easily came to €50 per head and while not super-expensive it is still a bit on the high side for more of a neighborhood place.
