I hadn't been her in a while and was disappointed, the service wasn't anything to write home about given it wasn't busy, and they messed up my husband's order. The fries were cold, my food was decent but it's not as good as I remember before. I've visited Macado's a good number of times over the last few years hoping that my experiences would improve, but I've come out the other side with a pretty decent conclusion. On any given day for lunch or dinner, service is always very subpar and meals range from being mediocre to disappointing. I didn't frequent this location until I fell into a friend group who likes Macado's pretty decently so we'd all meet up to have meals together sometimes. We don't do that anymore because of how much of a letdown our experiences have been. I kept going back on the days where wings were on a nice deal, and each and every wing meal went like this: service was awful even if the restaurant wasn't crowded, the wings were always violently oversauced, and the wings were always old/cold/extremely sad. This review would be a 2 star review had I not stopped in to have lunch on St. Patrick's day a few weeks ago. The service was really good (I requested being sat in the main building and not the newer bar building) and the holiday themed lunches were so fresh and so yummy. I wish every meal there could match my most recent experience! But even with this one lovely visit, I still have this restaurant on my "try not to go there" list unless all of my other options have failed. read more

Rainy stormy Sunday afternoon perfect for a quick bite out. I was greeted and seated quickly. Forgetting my glasses made reading their extensive menu and I do mean it's extensive which for post Covid is great so many restaurant menus have shrunk in terms of food feedings. Their clearly did not. I started with a tossed salad with 1,000 Island Dressing and some garlic bread. A wonderfully big salad and the garlic bread satisfied my carb craving. Next I had the Julius Caesar sandwich - breaded chicken breast, marinara sauce, melted provolone, Parmesan, on a toasted Kaiser roll. Very tasty and filling. I will sat my waitress was phenomenal she brought me my requested items quickly and had such a welcoming presence! Rude people! We were from out of town and got a recommendation to go there. It was 7 PM, we walked into the empty restaurant with a full bar through another set of doors. I asked for a table for two, and was told go to the bar. I told them we didn't want to have dinner in a bar. She told me to go there. We went and there were no seats available. The hostess told me to sit outside, or go somewhere else. I decided to go somewhere else. As I was leaving, a waitress was walking in the door. I told her about our experience. Stopped in here for a late lunch with my wife at this college town hang out known for sandwiches and drink specials. Upon arrival, we were greeted and immediately seated but it was clear that the staff was doing double duty as our hostess was also our server. We were seated in a booth and I had to adjust the table as one side of the table was closer to the booth the other side. Upon receiving our menus, I noted that there is a large selection of sandwiches (like a whole page), burgers, salads and quesadillas. I opted for a club sandwich with fries ($2 upcharge) and my wife ordered a chicken sandwich with cheese. It took a little longer than usual for food to get to the table and drinks ran empty at times. When our food arrived, my club was cut in squares not the normal triangles. My wife's sandwich was cut in half and contained a whole grilled chicken breast. The sandwiches tasted good but our pickles were not on the sanitary paper but instead touching the basket and my sandwich could have used a little more mayo. It is also important to note that tables/ booths are close together so you can be part of the other groups conversation or vice versa even if you don't want to be. When you begin with the hostess rolling her eyes at you after saying table for 2 outside, patio (because it's a 65 fall day), that sets the vibe. All but one table was empty outside. Got to table, 2 servers saying "I'm not going to clear this table it's so and sos job- I only make $13 an hour and I'm not doing anything extra. Ok. Took a while to get served, he was nice, food took awhile to come out. Asked another server to send him over or send Italian dressing, neither happened. The most interesting thing was the file sitting in the maroon Nissan in the larking lot with the missing front end. The bus boy went out for a toke. Dishes sat on tables. Made a quick drink stop with some friends while waiting on another bar to open. Outside area was pretty busy, so we sat at the empty bar indoors. After a few minutes a bartender finally came up and got our drink orders. I just grabbed a Guinness since they actually had it on nitro. I really appreciated her effort, but the pour on the Guinness was pretty poor. It's an easy thing to have people learn, especially if you invested in getting the nitro line. It seems we may have came in during a shift change, because after getting our drinks we didn't see our bartender for a good 15 minutes. Once we finally got the attention of the oncoming, we closed out and got out of there. A little history - my Hubby went to VA Tech and I went to college in Lexington, VA both of us back in the 80's. Spanky's/now all Macado's all hold a special place in our hearts (SO many glasses and frisbees - if you know, you know). Our oldest graduated from Tech with an undergrad and a Masters and now works for the school, every time we visit, we have to go to Macado's - it's a family tradition. Stay with me on this... The Blacksburg location has been hit or miss - mostly 3 star experiences. Several months ago we went to my original haunt in Lexington (the youngest was visiting VMI) and were were again a 3 - a little disappointed. I was beginning to think we were romanticizing the "glory days" of our youth. Then we were camping in central VA, didn't feel like cooking that night and saw this Macado's. We knew it wouldn't be fine dining and didn't expect too much, but it was Labor Day weekend and not much else was opened. Boy we're we surprised! Here was EVERYTHING I have always loved about Macado's! Excellent service - the full menu, executed the way I remembered! I ordered the mixed berry sangria - yes please! Everything the menu said it was, except the complimentary Hurricane glass. That made me sad, but it's not like I don't own enough of them! We started with Chips, Dips and Things, because we always have. The pretzel was cooked to order everything was yummy! Hubby made his own sandwich with roast beef and I probably got the Mona Lisa untoasted (it's been a couple of weeks, but that's my usual, I may have gotten crazy, but that's not the point). The POINT is that the sandwiches in this location hark back to the old Spanky's/Macado's days. They are piled HIGH, everything seems to be made to order (not sitting somewhere half cooked ready to hit the microwave like their counterparts in other locations. Ate here last night and had a little wait to get seated because it appears people are doing more than one job. The food was slow coming out but when it did it was darned good. We had the potato soup (cup) and it was delicious. I had a stuffed quesadilla that was super cheesy with a nice picante. My husband had a mushroom burger with cheddar cheese sub'ed with no problem. He said it was perfectly cooked and delicious. The french fries he had were also a hit. Our waitress couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful, getting us the last of the soup with the zeal of a mountain climber taking on Everest. Fried pickles ATE DOWN. Absolutely delightful, and the ranch was also especially good. Shoutout to our waiter who gave us extra, you ROCKED. And he was funny, great guy. Macado's has been a favorite since the mid-1980s when I lived in Radford VA. It was a regular stop for having lunch and dinner with family and friends because the sandwiches are delicious as well as several of their other menu items. The restaurant itself has a nice ambiance, even with it being as old as it is now, and isn't loud or crowded-feeling. We no longer live in VA but make it a point to stop by Macado's every time we're in town visiting family. read more

Stopped in for lunch today when visiting Farmville. There are two separate buildings. One is the bar area and one is the general seating area. The general area was not crowded so we sat there. The decor is interesting and the space is nice. The menu is a bit overwhelming and I had a hard time deciding what to eat. The appetizer came out quick but the sandwich was super slow. We arrived around noon on a Tuesday in February. We were greeted promptly and were taken to a table in the "other" building. Apparently, there is a main section then the section we sat in which had nice bar with seats and also individual tables. Our server arrived almost immediately to get our drink orders. The menu is, to say the least, quite expansive. There are lots of appetizers, quesadillas, hamburgers, and a huge list of sandwiches. There are also a handful of salads and a few entrees. Once we ordered our lunch, it arrived in about 10-15 minutes. We shared the Big City Jazz sandwich with potato salad, and we each had a draft Loose Cannon IPA. The IPA was pretty good but a tad sweeter than we like. The sandwich was served on a slightly sweet, sour dough roll (recommended by our server), and it was stuffed with goodies. So much so that you could barely get your mouth around it. The roll was delicious, and it was the highlight; however, the stuff stuffed in it was tasty as well. I was near FarmVille to run the High Bridge 5k last weekend. Beautiful day for a run and always worked up an appetite. Macado's is only 10 minutes away so I got there around 10 am and the second one to be seated. The server was great and got me the Bronx sandwich which was huge and filling. We were driving in to town to do the High Bridge Trail so we called in a sandwich order to pick up. I ordered the Stogie with a side order of the house made chips which had a $2 up charge. Not certain they were worth the up charge. They were not anything to write home about and did not come with the ranch or French onion dip. Maybe they are better and more plentiful for dine in. Take out for the win I ordered the bang bang shrimp & portabella quesadilla. 30 minutes after I ordered, it was picked up and I was back in my hotel room. The 10 shrimps were HUGE and crispy with a delicious creamy + spicy sauce. The quesadilla was CHEESY and filled with veggies. Both were excellent and the portions were big ! Ambiance was quiet and we thought we'd have a great meal and nice time since restaurant was quiet with only 2 tables since it just stopped raining and fireworks were finished. Food was cold and had to be sent back and brought back barely warm and 2nd entree waited for 40 minutes told them to pack it to go and upon inspection the roll not toasted the meat burnt no cheese as in description no side and they actually took a plastic container of gravy and smashed it into the sandwich. Since moving up from Myrtle Beach SC this bar and restaurant has become my favorite in this small town of FarmVille VA. the staff go above and beyond. Meeting the bartender that works out back, Ashlii, I have had a positive experience every time! Tonight when I arrived I noted other patrons having their chicken Alfredo. I was unaware they had that on the menu! I immediately ordered it and was HIGHLY impressed. The garlic bread was made to absolute perfection. This is a must visit when in Farmville. I worked here in college many moons ago. I love that many of the favorites then are still on the menu, but with lots of upgrades to boot. The service is great. The positives about this place is the customer service was great. I was greeted at the door. My server Abby was friendly. She periodically checked to make sure I was okay but didn't overly do it so I appreciate that. The place was clean overall but could use some attention to details like cleaning the salt shakers. The food looked amazing, it was fresh, but I was disappointed with the flavor. The pasta was not seasoned while cooked. The chicken parm had a burnt taste on the edges. The water also had a weird after taste. I also ordered the mozzarella logs which were good I just didn't like the shaved cheese on top. read more

Macados use to be one of the best places in FarmVille VA but it seems with Covid everything has gone downhill. We had a 40 minute wait (which is perfectly acceptable). Got to the table, ordered. Then took a hour to get our food from placing our order. Around the 40 minute mark the waitress said we could just pay for our drinks and leave if it didn't come out soon. Food came and half of it was burnt and without any condiments on them. One sandwich was completely burnt, and when we sent it back they gave it back to us with only the top piece replaced.
