Mac & Mac - READ THIS REVIEW BEFORE YOU BUY:
We ordered a sofa from mac & mac's Farnham showroom on 8th Jan and were told a delivery time of 6-8 weeks making the expected delivery date 19th Feb - 4th March. Having heard nothing from them by the latter date we called their 'customer services'. After finally getting through they had no idea what had happened to our order but promised to find out and get back to us. Several days, still no contact from them. Called again, left messages. We went through this process about 5 times over a 7 week period - we were told a different story each time: it had left Italy, we would be contacted by their warehouse by the end of the week; it would be leaving italy at the end of the week and take around two weeks to get here; it was due in their UK warehouse imminently and we should be hearing directly from them once they'd quality controlled it. Eventually, after much chasing, and being fobbed off with several conflicting excuses, we were given a delivery date of 3rd May - over 16 weeks from our order date - around 10 weeks late!
When they delivered it, the sofa that they told us in the show room would come in parts, came in just 2 pieces (it was a big corner sofa - 3 metres in length) and could not fit through the corridor into the room it was intended for. We called customer services - and of course couldn't get through. I was then told by the delivery guy that they'd have to leave it in the hallway as they couldn't take it back. As a child minder and with 2 small children of our own, this was not an option as the sections were massive and could only be left balanced precariously blocking the hallway - which was a complete health and safety hazard. UnabIe to contact customer services, I called the show room to explain this to the manager and asked them to take it away and that we could sort out how to proceed later. I was told in no uncertain terms by an extremely rude sales man that this was against their policy. No returns of goods, no refund (we'd already paid in full). He wouldn't listen, talked over me and then shouted at me. Given that they had not discussed where the sofa was going in the house or how it would be delivered at any point during the sales process we felt this was completely unreasonable. They certainly hadn't made us aware of this 'policy'.
At this point- feeling totally powerless - I got cross and said they would be getting a very bad review from us. Ten minutes later, when all the parts were brought into the house, I got a call back from mac & mac to tell me - in a very nasty tone - that they would take it away, but no refund and they'd be talking to us the next day.
After endless to'ing and fro'ing the MD said he would give us a £2k credit note - no refund - which was just 50% of the price we paid. Several days after our refusal to accept this, and various discussions initiated by us, they increased the credit note to £3k - but stipulated that it must be spent in their discount warehouse in Cheam as they were banning us from visiting their Farnham store. When we asked why we were banned the MD had the gall to tell us that we had upset their sales people there. Unbelievable!
We eventually found a separate company (Sofa Assist - v. good) who specialise in delivering furniture - and they managed to get the sofa into the room for us by dismantling and reassembling it - at a cost to us of £300. To add insult to injury, when Mac & Mac delivered the sofa and when they re-delivered it to our hallway the second time, they damaged our solid wood flooring both times leaving large scratches which we have also had to have repaired. We have had no apology or compensation for this.
Our advice would be don't buy from this company - their sales people are charm personified, but their customer service is appalling and their attitude when dealing with a complaint process is unprofessional, arrogant and incredibly rude. read more
