Traveling to Montana and had to stop for dinner. This did not disappoint. Excellent salad bar. Delicious teriyaki chicken in bed of rice and sides of broccoli. Perfect. Hubby had 1/2 rack of ribs and augratin potatoes. Both filled our bellies A wonderful atmosphere. Fireplaces and old time feel. Good beer and wine selection Happy with another good find. I don't expect "Irish Pubs" in America to be authentic, but the only things Irish about this restaurant is that they serve beer (I only counted one beer that was Irish) and that they have a story about an Irish wench on the cover of their menu - which, toward the end makes no sense (and is fictional according to my waitress). To my disappointment there was no lamb on the menu (an Irish staple in every pub). That said, I consider this restaurant to be a steakhouse, and as such it was rather good. The salad bar had a decent selection (a bit limited), but the blue cheese dressing was superb with the shredded bacon. Torn between the ribeye and the salmon, my waitress recommended the salmon. The salmon was cooked perfectly to order (medium rare) - as good (or better) than the best I've had (except what I cook at home). The rice pilaf was decent. The "potatoes au gratin" were a cheesy mess of diced potatoes - the only disappointment of my order. When approached by the hostess (manager?) she offered to replace it, but I was already quite full anyway. The price was a little high but reasonable for the quality (potato dish aside). The service was super - attentive but not intrusive, polite but not sappy, helpful but not long-winded. I'd return if given the opportunity, definitely to repeat the salad with blue cheese, probably trying the ribeye, and definitely avoiding the "au gratin" potatoes. On our way back from Fargo, we decided to try a local restaurant as apposed to a chain restaurant. I loved the rustic dark woods of the interior. I went out of my comfort zone and went with the walleye sandwich and waffle fries. It was very good and there was an ample amount of waffle fries. Oh and the coffee was nice too. Service and staff was friendly. The food was not what we expected. I had the stuffed shrimp, the shrimp were fairly good sized but over cooked, the stuffing was a bit crisp and tasted a bit plain. My boyfriend had steak and walleye, the steak which should have been rare was medium, which I can understand because of the thickness of the steak, but the walleye was overdone and heavily doused with lemon pepper. That being said the salad bar was well stocked and the wild rice mix and broccoli that came with our meals was delicious. The assorted butters on the bread table would be a wonderful compliment to fresh bread. Maybe it was an off night for the cooks. read more

We spent 11 hours on the road today and wanted a good burger when we got to town. We were originally seated in the restaurant part and decided to leave although the menu looked inviting. In the parking lot I asked someone if there was a place in town we could get a good burger. They pointed us back into the Irish Pub where there is a different menu at the bar. Wahoo! Buffalo Wings were ok. Paid $11 for 12 of em though. Wife ordered the fish and fries and got sick from the fish. Kids ordered cheeseburgers off the kids menu and Id guess the patties are frozen and and then nuked given they had the consistency of the drink coasters. Nothing on em either other than an unmelted piece of cheddar. No ketchup. Nothin. I saw some other people eating nachos that looked pretty good. While we've usually enjoyed the good food here, last night was an absolutely horrid experience. The half hour wait we'd been told to expect was over an hour, and once we were seated, another half hour before our waitress came. Then another hour before we got our food. Terrible experience. Stopped for a quick bite and the Bison game. We sat in the bar and I asked if we could order off the dining room menu. Since it's busy they said we couldn't so we ordered two appetizers. They took more than an hour. The reason...they had several big parties in front of us. The great thing about Mabel Murphy's is the salad bar. Their prices are supper-club/steak-house, but I've rarely gotten food from them that lives up to the price. There are a few bright spots on the menu, although none come to mind right now as outstanding. The free 'happy hour' appetizers have not been worth leaving the table for when I've been there. I want to give this place a better review than I actually can. It's awesome to stumble upon this place while traveling, getting off at another exit looking to grab something to eat and finding a local place with this much charm, instead of yet another chain or a generic establishment just taking weary drivers' money. But our experience just doesn't warrant a higher rating. The local charm also adds to confusion: it was honestly hard to identify the front door, and once we were inside there seemed to be a bar on one side and the restaurant on the other. Since we wanted to eat, we headed to the restaurant. We had no idea until much later that the 'pub' half had it's own, separate menu. (and in addition, one in our party managed to walk into a closet while trying to exit, again thanks to the lack of signs) The interior is vast, and charming, even if it is a bit dated. There were a large number of cars in the parking lot, but we honestly never saw more than 4 other customers while we were in the restaurant. The menu, however, looks like it hasn't been updated in 20 years. It reads as 'generic nicer restaurant from the early 90's', which was one of the last times salad bars were popular at steakhouses and seafood restaurants. The salad bar itself was almost a joke while we were there: iceberg lettuce and perhaps 5 other toppings, none of which looked particularly fresh. We weren't looking for a big meal, so given the dinner options on the restaurant side, we opted to split dishes. (again, we had no idea there was a separate lounge menu) I can't be sure, but it really seemed like at this point our server decided we weren't big spenders, and we got less attention. After our entrees, she even brought the check over and said "I'm guessing you won't be interested in dessert?" One of our party asked to see the dessert menu, and the server disappeared for 5 min and returned without it, asking if we had decided about dessert. We didn't order any. The entrees themselves were good. The people were friendly. The place was cozy. And if we had had a great experience, we'd just chalk the problems up to the place's 'charm'. But we left feeling like the place was once better than it is now. It feels weird leaving a yelp review for a place where I'm pretty sure I didn't even have cell service to check yelp, but maybe some people plan out their travel eating ahead of time more than I do. read more

I went here for my birthday and sadly wish I would have simply went to Applebees. The hostess ignored us when we walked in and after a few moments of awkward silence we finally had to engage her. you are seated in small dated rooms with two tables which makes for an awkward dinner. I ordered the steak and lobster only to be very disappointed. The steak had no seasoning and tasted like water all on top of being cooked to medium well when I ordered a medium rare steak. The lobster tail was over cooked and all you could taste was pepper. All in all this is what you get at Mable Murphy's: 1. Bad service from a staff that appears to not wanna be there. 2. Cooks who don't know what salt is or how to properly cook the menu items. 3. Outdated decor and a seating arrangement that gives you an uncomfortable experience. No idea why this place has an average of 3.5 stars but don't let that fool you! We got there today, now granted it was Friday, but it was literally 11:01 AM and the parking lot was full... they open at 11AM every day. We only get to get here once a year on our way to the Fargo Marathon... but we stop here every year like it's Mecca! I have had a different dish every year (same beer though-which comes in a 32 oz Mason Jar #happy face) and every one has been amazing!!! My husband is a bit more of a creature of habit.. usually gets the soup, salad, and sandwich bar. The soups and bread is always to die for! Fresh and tasty. Exceptional Beer Cheese and the best Clam Chowder you will have. Service has always been excellent, particularly this year our server Zach was very attentive and accommodating! My wife and I were just passing through Fergus Falls and found this little gem right off of the interstate. I love the atmosphere. The building itself is filled with character. The food was solid. We got the fajita skins. I thought those were good but my wife wasn't digging them. We also tried out the nachos, which is a staple here I guess. They were very tasty. I had the prime rib sandwich. The flavor of the prime rib mixed with the au jus was great. The salad bar was simple yet very satisfying. I think all of the dressing were made from scratch. I really like that. My wife got the beer cheese soup. She claims to be a beer cheese soup connoisseur, and she approves. All in all, I think it is definitely worth a try if you're passing through and want some solid food. read more

I never write reviews but feel compelled to do so after having an abysmal meal at Mabel Murphy's last night. The menu says the restaurant opened in 1977 and it looks like the menu and decor have not changed one iota since that year. Shrimp cocktail, chicken divan, chicken tetrazzini and iceberg lettuce salad bar, although brought back fond memories of my high school years, were deep sixed from most menus years ago for a reason. The food lacked taste and creativity. The menu did not have many options for vegetarians or those with food sensitivities such as gluten and lactose intolerance. The wine list was of poor quality. Our server seemed intimidated when we asked to taste our wine before making our final decision (I went with the Guinness on tap figuring that could not be ruined!). The hostess and one of the waitresses (not ours) were really friendly and welcoming. I would avoid this restaurant at any cost! read more
