I should've read the Yelp reviews first... I too, purchased a Groupon for a Couples Massage a solid 4-5 months ago, and the earliest available appointment was December (which I learned after calling and leaving messages 4-5 times). Anywho, we scheduled for today. Our appointment was at 6pm, and about 5:30 I received a text saying they were running 20 mins late. At least they provided a heads up, but was super annoying when I had already left work early due to their time constraints. We arrived after 6, to be informed "your appointment was at 6." Clearly The girl who checked us in had no idea about the text. We were told to sit in the lobby, an older lady put a tray if hot towels in between us, she said to let them cool. She came back a few minutes later asking if we had neck tension or wanted a hot towel on our necks, we said yes and she informed us "you should've done that when I brought the towels over". We waited for a bit for our massage, and they took us to their "lower level"-out the front door and through the alley. We were given a room with the bathroom connected, which was nice. I explained that my right shoulder was super tight. I was only given a poor quality sheet-no blanket or bed warmer and it was so cold. The masseuse squirted the oil directly on to me instead of in his hands first. He did nothing to work out the tension in my shoulder-I think at times he had no clue what to do. Our one hour massage (that was late) lasted about 40 minutes. We were then offered aromatherapy that takes "about 3 extra minutes". We agreed to do that...the water took 7-8 minutes to warm up, then we had probably 2 minutes to enjoy it. We still tipped appropriately, but I'll stick to my Massage Envy membership and won't return for another visit. I hope they treat their non-Groupon folks much better. read more

I scheduled a 5p appointment, I was told at 5:10p that I should go run some errands, because they wouldn't be ready for me till 5:30p. I was planning on getting a facial and so I stayed. They were not ready for me till 5:45p. I went to use the bathroom and the lights didn't work and there was also a litter box. How luxurious! Facial was right at 30 minutes, and the esthetician talked incessantly. Best was yet to come, when I went to check out no one knew how to run a credit card. I had to wait to pay for my service, after waiting an hour for my service. The person up front put me on the phone with someone to process my payment. They took my credit card over the phone?!? Girls weekend trip and how else to start the weekend but with a 2-hour message?!? The spa was a recommendation from the hotel. It's located in the Art District in what I assume an old warehouse of sorts. The front area is offers the receptionist, kitchen, lounge area, spa room and bath. All very tranquil...staff is super friendly and welcoming and the cost for services are inline with what I'm accustomed to paying. So we opted for a 3-person message. In theory okay makes sense...and at the end of day it was fine. The room was warm and the tables not level so I bounced a lot. I wished my massage therapist had a stronger hand. But that's a personal preference. I'd recommend the spa and when I'm in town I'd likely head back but in my room and on a level floor. read more

WORST MASSAGE EXPERIENCE EVER I really like to give people the benefit of the doubt, so I'm really not the person to write an angry, negative review of Yelp. But this was just so awful that I feel like I must. It was a TOTAL waste of my time and money. Like others, I bought a Groupon. They enticed me with the "priority booking" deal for 10 dollars more, but the reason I took it is because they ensured me I could return my Groupon at any time for my money back, which I found out was not true. Groupon has a three-day return policy that Ma'ati didn't tell me about, so I paid $39.99 for a Groupon I couldn't use, and $49.99 for an awful massage. I get to the place, and they are 20 minutes late for my appointment. On the phone, they asked me if I wanted a male or female masseuse. I said female. Who walks out 20 minutes late? A male. We go back into the room and it was freezing and way too bright in there. He makes uncomfortable comments like, "Take off your bra," with no context. It look him a few moments to later tell me that it was so he could massage my back better. But just being told plain and simple to take of my bra really irked me. He comes back into the room and starts the massage. The room has an OVERPOWERING scent of something, and it gave me an awful headache. His massage was so unnecessarily fast and aggressive. He was just yanking my body every which way, which naturally made me tense up even more. It felt like he actually had no idea what he was doing, as he wasn't hitting any of the "spots." He was just rubbing super fast and violently random places all over me. Masseuses are supposed to have studied the anatomy of the body and know where they are supposed to massage. This guy just did whatever. One time, I could tell he thought he was getting a knot out, but he was just actually rubbing my bone and not a knot. The entire time I felt uncomfortably exposed. He made no effort to cover me up with the sheet when he moved my body. I felt breezes in places I shouldn't feel breezes. He also massaged right up close to my private parts -- most masseuses stop a couple inches away. Then, he forced my body into these random stretches that were not at my level of flexibility. I am not flexible! But he kept pushing, and I tensed up so bad because they hurt so much. I felt like he was pushing me off the table. Not to mention, the entire time my privates were exposed because he never put the sheet where it needed to be. He also moved my body in weird ways and forgot to support the rest of my body, so they started hurting. For example, he literally reached under my back and lifted my entire body off of the table, and never supported my head, so it was just dangling there. My neck felt like it was about to fall off. THIS MASSAGE WAS NOT RELAXING, WHATSOEVER, AND DID NOT FEEL GOOD IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM. More things that added to the level of discomfort: - The table's head support kept slipping because it was a poorly-made table and he also massaged so fast and aggressively that the force of it kept pushing it away. My head was left sitting with cold, hard metal pushing into my face. - The music cut off halfway through and he didn't even try to fix it, so it was just awkward, not-relaxing silence for 30 minutes. - He did some "aromatherapy" thing afterwards that dried out my face and gave me a rash. DO NOT get a massage here!! It will be the worst waste of your time, money, and sanity. You will leave feeling worse than when you came in. My boyfriend (who is not a masseuse) had to give me a massage afterwards just to release the tension from this awful experience. It felt better than the actual massage at Ma'ati! That should tell you something! I would give this place zero stars if I could. 0/10 worst experience ever. read more

I love it here. I've been several times and it's def my fav spa in winston salem. Always a relaxing vibe when I walk in, great music and I'm immediately offered a drink - usually wine :). I've never had the same therapist, but the massage experience is always amazing and I don't ever want it to end! They also have a beautiful patio in the back for groups or parties. I hope to find a reason to use it soon! I've also had a miscommunication issue with a scheduler before, but the owner Mya(sp) has always called me personally right away to handle business. I took a friend last night for her birthday and blindfolded her before we got there. The staff was super helpful in carrying out the surprise and it worked out perfect!! This was by far the best experience I've ever had! I use the term "experience" deliberately, because this was more than just any usual massage. Ma'ati Spa is definitely not your ordinary cookie cutter chain. From the moment I walked in, my senses were greeted with soothing aromas and sounds which immediately calmed my mind and body. I was then greeted by my massage therapist and another beautiful soul named Shereka(sp?) who immediately asked me if I wanted a beverage. The options were water, wine and I believe tea, but I lost focus after WINE. They only had red wine, but let's face it, it's better for the heart, right?? I had a brief consultation with my therapist Dominic in which I pointed out every ache and pain (as an avid runner-there were many) and he was very attentive. Throughout my hour deep tissue massage, it seemed as though Dominic was in tune with every muscle, knot, and ache in my body and adjusted the pressure as needed. His expertise is unlike any other licensed therapist I have been to and I could tell that he is beyond knowledgeable and qualified. To ensure that I got the complete experience, I was offered the aromatherapy treatment after my massage. Once my 3 minute, steamy, eucalyptus, sensory-wakener was over, I wasn't rushed out, but instead was told to relax, take my time, and was even offered another glass of wine! I, like many others, purchased their Groupon (hoping for the best) because it was a great deal. 3 phone calls later I was finally able to make my appointment (a month and some change away as compensation for my multiple phone calls) Due to circumstances beyond my control I needed to reschedule that appointment a few weeks later. I called 4 days prior to my appointment and left several messages that day and in the following days with no reply. It's now been over 3 weeks later and I never heard back. This is the first time I've had an issue with a Groupon deal being so hard to book or reschedule. Visiting this Spa was a first and very different from any other spa I've gone to. I loved the vibe of the place and tho the musics noise was a bit above the normal level, it wasn't unbearable. I enjoyed their great customer service as I was offered wine, mimosas, and or water(which I preferred the latter). I was a bit behind schedule as the spa is situation downtown and a bit difficult to navigate regarding parking if you're not familiar with it. I think the owners should consider letting clients know where and how to park during the time of scheduling. I would give 3.5 Stars. Like others, I purchased a Groupon and learned that the wait for scheduling was 3 months. Very inconvenient, but luckily I tried scheduling quickly enough to cancel my Groupon and purchase priority booking. It would make better business sense to communicate the scheduling issue and/or remove the Groupon deal since many customers are being lost over it. Priority booking is essentially the same price. I went in for the treatment and staff were very nice. However, I could tell that the business model (Lots of Groupons likely resulting in fewer tips) was wearing on the staff. Staff members were trying to do their job, but clearly not happy. Nice facility, but management seems to be making some decisions that are not helping the team or business success. read more

Let me start by saying that this ONE star rating is generous. I purchased a Groupon deal for a 90 minute couples massage. When I called to schedule the appointment they claimed that the soonest available appointment was over 3 weeks away (I later found out that the therapist that answered the phone was checking her personal availability and not that of the entire staff which had many available appointments). Nevertheless, due to unforeseen circumstances, we were forced to reschedule our appointments (originally scheduled for Sunday May 27th). We called and were hung up on FOUR times in a row (possible technical difficulties). The woman that rescheduled the appointment booked us for Monday May 28th (memorial day). She also told us that that following Sunday was an option as well (Sunday June 3rd). Two days later, we received a phone call from the spa apologizing for the inconvenience, and telling us that the woman that booked our new appointments did not realize the spa would be closed for memorial day. I was upset, but knew that the following Sunday was an option and told her that we would like the June 3rd appointment. She then told me that there were no appointments available on June 3rd despite what the previous woman claimed (I later found out that she was checking her personal schedule and she (personally) did not have anything for June 3rd). I told her that we would have to call back when we had our schedules in front of us. I DID NOT CALL BACK... Sunday May 27th at 3:15 (15 minutes after our original appointment time) we received a phone call from the spa asking us if we were on our way to our appointment (that we rescheduled...and then unscheduled). I asked to speak to the manager (who was the owner) and told her the whole story. She was extremely apologetic, told me that the Sunday June 3rd appointment WAS available, and booked us for it. She assured me that we would receive VIP treatment upon arrival including "Alkaline water" and "aromatherapy." Sunday June 3rd at 1:00 pm (2 hours before our new appointment) we received a voice message telling us that the therapist that was schedule to massage "called in sick" and they only had one female and one male to accommodate us (we requested two females). Despite being uncomfortable with the new arrangements we agreed to be seen. We drove 33 minutes from where we live to get to the appointment (Greensboro to Winston Salem). We walked in to what looked like a kitchen of a house with art work and jewelry displayed for sale. We waited minutes before we even saw an emoployee. None of the employees were in ANY type of professional dress (dirty white t-shirts and saggy blue jeans, Capri pants and wrinkly black t-shirt, sweatpants etc). We sat on a barstool at the kitchen counter (waiting room) and received an "aromatherapy treatment" that consisted of hanging our faces over a dish bowl of hot water with a towel on our heads. I hope that this service was free to everyone because I wouldn't have paid a penny for it! At 3:35 (our appointment time was 3:00), a black man with long dreads, white t-shirt and sweatpants reaking of marijuana (VERY obvious, distinct smell) came to tell us that we needed to reschedule our appointment because he was "busy" and didn't know he would be taking on our appointment. This "spa" was more like a community kitchen for an apartment complex (with random people coming in an out with food, skateboards, etc). The lack of professionalism is appalling and I'm embarrassed that I trusted groupon to recommend this business as a reputable one. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME, ENERGY, OR MONEY at Ma'ati Spa. read more

Ma'ati was great! I purchased a Groupon in the Fall of 2014 and when I tried to book, the lady from Ma'ati told me that I would be unable to get an appointment until March 2015. I was a little annoyed because the Groupon-- a couple's massage-- was supposed to be a Christmas present for my boyfriend and I, but I understood why they wanted to limit the number of Groupons used per week. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and asked to fill out some forms. To make the form-filling experience better, we were both offered a beverage and both chose red wine-- great way to start my relaxing afternoon! After filling everything out, we were escorted back to our massage room where our two therapists introduced themselves and asked some general questions. I thought they did a great job explaining the process to my boyfriend who had never had a professional massage before. The room was nice, low lighting, relaxing music, and warm blankets on the massage tables. It didn't take long for me to realize why those thick blankets were on the table-- BRRRR!!!! I'm always cold, so I didn't think much of it, but when my hot-natured boyfriend commented on the room temperature, I knew it must be cold! Once the massage started, everything was great! Both therapists asked about pressure level, which I appreciate because I tend to like a little more pressure than they typically give. My therapist pointed out that, while I had mentioned my shoulders/neck as the usual location of my stress, I was actually fairly tight in my lower back. It seemed like she wanted to clue me in that she was going to spend more time working that area, which was great-- I've had massages where the therapist has completely ignored the areas of tension I pointed out and I left feeling a little frustrated. I appreciated my therapist clueing me in on why she might be spending time in an area I didn't identify. Overall, we both thoroughly enjoyed our massages and felt completely relaxed afterwards! To my surprise, we were offered an aromatherapy treatment after the massage. My therapist handled the aromatherapy treatment and apologized for running low on some of the oils-- very thoughtful! She told us to relax and take as long as we wanted. It was nice to feel like we weren't being rushed out the door for the next client! I called on Monday to schedule a couple's a massage and received an answering service in the middle of the day. I called again on Tuesday and was told I needed to wait until someone called me back to schedule since I had a groupon (after the rep spent 30 mins on the phone with me setting up the appt). I finally got a call back today from the "groupon scheduler" and she informed me that I wouldn't be able to get in until next month because they only accept a certain number of groupon appts per day. After speaking with her manager, she called me back to offer an appt this week but at this point I've spent literally 1 hour of my life trying to make a simple spa appointment. On top of this, my husband bought me the groupon here for a couple's massage and called ahead to make sure that pre-natal massages would be accepted in place of deep tissue. The 1st rep told me this would be fine at no additional charge, the "groupon scheduler" told me that it would be an additional $20. I'm only in town for the week and I'd rather pay full price at a different spa than to get nickled and dimed and passed around when trying to use a groupon at this spa. I called Groupon told them of what happened, got my money back, informed the "groupon scheduler" that I would not be scheduling an appointment and will be going somewhere else. It's too bad, I always tip well and was planning to buy my sister a massage here to go along with my couple's package groupon because she lives in the area. Scheduling was a bummer - granted, we didn't have the easiest schedule, but they had limited openings for this particular item and it took 3 months to schedule. The actual massage time and services were a little less than promised (20 minute chair massage lasted about 14-15 mins). The meal was nothing extraordinary, bordering on the bland side, but certainly not bad. The overall experience was nothing like it was billed. The lobby area is also the massage area, which is really the cooking/kitchen/eating area. With people coming and going, it is not a space to relax or unwind. While not nearly as bad as some of the other reviewers detailed,the experience leaves alot to be desired. For $99, it was a lot to promise, and sadly, they fell quite short. I wanted to surprise my mom and aunt with a spa day for Christmas. I wasn't sure how comfortable they would be, so I wanted to take them to a black-owned location, not too far from town. I found Ma'ati Spa online and was pleased, initially, because they show diversity in their images on the website. They were also offering serious discounts, so I was able to book online: a couples massage package for my mom and aunt and a massage+ for myself. I called to schedule the appointment and had no problem in after Christmas on short notice. Pros: Staff was very friend, helpful, accommodating, and skilled. Not everyone is a chatterbox (my aunt enjoyed having her services explained; my mom enjoyed the quiet). The deep tissue massage with Dominic is BOMB! Get that. I found the decor lovely and want to visit in the summer so I can enjoy the outside area. Street parking was free and plentiful. Cons: They don't offer robes and slippers for every guest, which was off-putting for my mom. The facial steam is so-so. I think it's free, but I wouldn't pay for it. The foot reflexology was uninspired. It just felt like a foot massage and I was expecting something more from the description online. The music in the waiting area can get a little loud, if you are having a service in the front room, and throw off the mellow vibe. Tips: If you go during the winter, do NOT get a mud body wrap! I thought mud = warm. NO! The clay is cold, the room I was in was cold and I was freezing while she applied the mud (even when they turned the heat up). It was incredibly uncomfortable and I would not recommend it during cold-winter months. (2) Find out where you should report for your appointment. There are two entrances and it's disconcerting to enter at the top level, have wine and a face stream and then go back out into the cold to get to the lower level for the services. (3) There is no ramp on the walkway down to the lower level, so watch your step! (4) Tipping! I didn't know how much customary. I was told 10%. I tipped more (since the services were offered at a discount anyway and my mom and aunt enjoyed themselves). Verdict: I will definitely visit again and may make this an annual thing for my mom and aunt It was an excellent, well-received gift. I booked an appointment at Ma'ati spa because I was in dire need of a massage to unload all of stress I had been carrying around in the last couple of weeks. The booking process was very easy and simple. I received a confirmation e-mail within 24 hours. I arrived early to my appointment and was first greeted by Carlton the receptionist with beverages (water, wine,tea) followed by a delicious platter of fruits. I received the Ausar package and was impresed with the quality of the massage. Jordan is a great masseuse. I definitely left refreshed and recharged; ready to take on the world! read more

Very interesting experience. The walk down the alley way was a little intimidating but the apartment was very nice. My masseuse told me to take my time and use the restroom that was attached if needed.... she gave me about five minutes and came in as I was undressing. The first bed I laid on squeaked with every moment so I had to transfer to the other table while she was still in the room (underwear only). I was freezing the entire time, with a thin white sheet. I could hear someone washing dishes and laughing and talking loudly outside the room. She stopped mid massage to ask someone to come into the room to cut the music on. My massage was forty minutes when I paid for sixty. The complimentary tea they offer you is a shot. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!!!! read more

I decided to come to Ma'ati Spa after hearing from some friends that it is a great place for a massage. Well, after the session, I can definitely say that this place absolutely delivers on the massage! When you come in, you first walk through the hall and it opens up to a living room and kitchen. It's definitely not usual, but the place itself is very nice. Apparently you can get a package here that includes dinner as well. I was greeted by Carlton, the receptionist, and he had me fill out the usual health questionnaire and waiver forms. I actually was able to get in early as I showed up early for my 2pm appointment, since the therapist was ready for me. The massage itself was amazing. It's hard to explain the style, but I guess a mixture between deep tissue and Swedish. My therapist was able to work out the kinks that were in my shoulder and upper back. She also did something I've never had done to me before, which was the hot towel on my back in between doing my back and my legs. I've never had it done before, but I can say that it felt great. My therapist was also courteous enough to wipe oil off my feet (I hate oil on my feet!). All in all, this experience was definitely one of the best massage experiences I've had in quite awhile. It's hard to pinpoint if this was actually the best massage ever since I've had so many over the years, but this is definitely up there! read more

Came here on my day off on Monday and had a great experience. The customer service was great. The seating in the waiting room was comfortable and they served us complimentary red wine which was real good. The room in which we received our massages was great with nice music to add. The actual massages were 60 min long and was equally as good as everything else. At the end they treated us to aromatherapy as well. My sister thought I was deserving of some relaxation for my 40th birthday so she purchased a facial and reflexology foot massage for me! As several others have mentioned in their reviews, one of the major downfalls of Ma'ati is the scheduling process. But this review will be based solely on the service and facial I received. It was a bit of confusion when I initially arrived due to I and another couple appointments being at the same time....no sweat on my part as I have been to the Spa before and didn't require the onboarding paperwork. After things settled, I was offered some water...cucumber infused, of course. My esthetician arrived and took me the scenic route (outside and down the walk) to the Spa room where I would receive my facial. Although I had no issues, I couldn't help but think of potential customers that would not be able to do so. Although I enjoyed it, the facial service which was booked and the facial service I received were slightly different. My esthetician was very knowledgeable and thorough, even suggesting some all natural facial products for ongoing care. I arrived and the place smelled great. The people were really nice. The spa services were done in a building behind the store front. To be honest I was disappointed. I had to ask the masseuse to change the linen because it was covered in hair then he did replace it with a sheet with a black stain on it telling me it's clean ok I'll trust u the ultimate deal breaker for me was the bed used for the massages squeaked really loud and they were extremely noisy outside the room which I thought was odd because it looked like I was the only one there... I don't feel like the room was clean enough to my standards and how is a facial done in the dark ? What they say about Groupon is true.. I wish I would have read these reviews before I bought my mother a Groupon here last year. She also was unable to book an appointment due to the same issues that others have mentioned (No one would answer her call, no one would call her back, she had to speak to the Groupon specialist, etc.) When she was finally able to get in touch with someone, they would not let her book an appointment before the Groupon expired. On top of that, they were VERY rude! I wish I wouldn't have wasted the money on buying this Groupon! Booked through the MINDBODY app. The location was very easy to find and facility was spacious. My Massage was with Demetria who was friendly, but the room was not ready, which caused the appointment to start over 15 mins. Late. I cut the 90 min massage off early bc it was unfortunately not helping at all. I am a therapist myself and this was not deep tissue. There were a few deep strokes but not a typical deep massage. I wasn't draped properly and felt exposed during some random stretches. She used too much body oil and although she was sweet, was way to chatty. read more

I booked Ma'ati for an event where they came on location and did walk up massages for students on campus! They were so professional and everyone really enjoyed the massages the 2 masseuses gave. Their administrative personnel was also very professional and great to work with! Loved it and I would definitely use them again for an event! I'll even go in and try out one of their massages. After booking them for an event, I went in and got a massage there myself and I loved it! The business is a very calm place that you're able to relax in as soon as you walk through the the door. The spa was EVERYTHING for my boyfriend and I. The staff was super friendly and accommodating to each one of our needs. I 1st booked thru Groupon. When i called to make an appointment, all groupons appointment were booked for months. I then explained to the receptionist Ashely that I was from out of town. She then accommodated me and it was well appreciated. The setting of the spa is very relaxing. The services I purchased was a couple massage, facial, vsteam, and we also used the hot tub. They served wine, tea, and water. I have no complaints at all. If you are ever in Winston, Salem , check them out. read more
