Honestly I really like Aikmans though for me its not one of those bars that you start the night off at but one of the bars you finish the night up at since it is open late everyday of the week. Basically, my last couple of nights out have ended at Aikmans. I also really like this place because they have a pretty broad selection of beers and ales as well as harder sprits for the more veteran drinkers out there. Its a pretty solid pub and pretty typical, I like that it is unpretentious and that the bar men are nice even to the student crowd such as myself. Now that I realise it is a bistro I am going to have to try the food one of these days!

The atmosphere was awesome (and divey) for students and I felt moderately comfortable as a 30 year old. They had a guy who was singing absolutely kick ass covers upstairs the first night and I was in love with the place. It gets crowded, so if you don't have a seat be prepared to get close to some undergrads...which could be a good or bad thing. Overall this is definitely worth a pop into whether you are a tourist or a student. If you are a student, you probably know all of this is and just wasted 30 seconds of your life.

As someone who truly loved little about Scotch, it was a wonderful way to taste and compare smoky vs peaty whiskeys. Fun. Our table was upstairs and we sat next to an open door which allows for fresh cool air. It was a warm day in Edinburgh. Our server was wonderful, patient and really helpful. Our choices were truly delicious. We started with the fish board, olives, and mushroom skewer. We loved them all. I enjoyed the cod main dish, while my wife finished the starters. The side of asparagus was also excellent. The mouse dessert was delicious but very rich, it's enough for 4 people. The cost of dinner was also totally reasonable. I recommend this place highly.

When we arrived at noon (opening time), the restaurant wasn't too busy. There is an impressive bar downstairs with many whiskies. We were led upstairs to the dining area. There is outdoor dining too that would be nice if the weather was warmer. Cool vibe, but it is kind of dark inside the stone walls. The menu is Scottish-focused with seasonal ingredients. We didn't want to overeat, so we decided to share a starter and a main. We got the Scottish venison fritters, which were ok. We enjoyed the pappardelle pasta (roast pumpkin and pecorino sauce, wild mushrooms, spinach, bacon and poppy seed crumb, crispy sage). It was flavorful and didn't feel too heavy. Staff were friendly and it was an enjoyable lunch.
