Star Petroleum

Star Petroleum

I don't write a ton of reviews but my recent experience was so wonderful I can't help but post. We…read morebecame a new customer of Star Petroleum about a year and a half ago when they came out to service our Propane tank. The service team was so nice and they are so conveniently located that we decided to switch over our oil to them as well. We've been very happy with no complaints. Recently, just days before our vacation out of the country (of course), our oil tank spouted a small leak. We called to ask if we could patch the tank until we returned from our trip. They came right out and attempted to help with a short term solution. Because the small hole was right on the seam, it was not able to be patched. The team was so considerate and concerned about us being able to enjoy our vacation that they went above and beyond to help put us at ease. They were able to create a temporary resolution until we returned home from vacation and had their team coming out while we were gone (with my sister-in-law house/dog sitting) to monitor the situation and keep the hot water going with a small supply of oil sourced outside of the tank that they continued to refill. Every single person that has come out has been extremely helpful, knowledgeable, friendly, and professional. Once we returned from our trip we found out that the annual service fee we pay (I think it is in the $60 / year range - very reasonable) also enrolls us into a program called "Tank Guard" which is like an insurance on your tank. With the replacement of our tank, this program covers up to $2,000 on the cost! It was truly the silver lining to an almost disastrous situation! Throughout this ordeal, I cannot speak highly enough on how considerate, accommodating, and supportive Star has been to us. Without their hard work to put us at ease, I don't think we would have even gone on or enjoyed our vacation but, because of the stellar team at Star, we enjoyed our trip and came home to good news about our oil tank replacement. Couldn't have picked a better oil supplier!! We are very, very happy customers!! Thank you guys for going above and beyond - it shows that you see your customers as people first and it makes all the difference!

Wingman Plumbing & Mechanical

Most people wait to call a plumber until it's unavoidable, and then can't wait for the plumber to…read moreleave. By the time Wingman Plumbing & Mechanical finished their work, I was sad to see them go. If your goal is to pay for all the plumbing work you need and none of the work you don't, stop playing footsie with the cheapo company with free estimates and no reviews and just call Wingman already. Al and Chad did a big-boned project that spanned about 6 weeks. Our house is 100 years old, and was renovated about 4 years ago, so of course there was a little baggage. We've never had a plumbing emergency here, but we like to prevent FUBAR situations when we can. Also, enough performance issues bugged us for long enough that we wanted to blast through the whole list. Wingman's work consisted of 3 rounds of work, on 3 different days: Round 1: The guys replaced our Mesozoic Era outdoor spigot with a frost-free spigot I'd bought (a Prier, which turned out to be Wingman's recommended brand). That mini-project included replacing the leaky indoor gate valve with a nice ball valve. That had been a burr in my saddle. The other thing they did in Round 1 was replace the shutoff valve on our downstairs toilet. Hadn't been an issue, but in his initial walk-through / estimate Chad noticed some corrosion that I hadn't. Round 2: We expected the showdown at the O.K. Corral, because it was the day Wingman had to work on the supply line entering the basement, AND replace the water heater. Our pressure had been low, and the supply line stuck out a foot farther into our basement than it needed to, so initially I wanted them only to increase the size of the pipe and reroute it closer to the foundation. In the walkthrough Chad said I'd probably also need the supply-line nipple replaced (it was corroded), and during Round 1 Al confirmed that. So we added that to the list. Al had the North Attleborough Water Department on-site at the beginning of Round 2, in case the supply-line nipple replacement got hairy and required a shutoff at the street. Turned out we didn't need one, which was good. The boys replaced and rerouted the supply line as planned, which solved the low pressure. But our water volume was still low. Al narrowed the problem down to the gate valve at the street, which was the Town's responsibility to replace. (Between Round 2 and Round 3 the Town replaced the gate valve, which solved the volume issue. It's worth noting that Al coordinated that with the Town, which he didn't necessarily need to do. That was probably a PITA for him, but he didn't let on. He's that kind of guy.) The water heater replacement was straightforward. Our old Whirlpool was corroding and had a pipe leak that I'd bodged shut 18 months before. They drained the sludge out of it and hauled it off. We ended up getting the 50-gallon HTP electric water heater (stainless steel) with the maximum warranty. I had considered getting a hybrid or an 80-gallon, but Al said he didn't think we needed either. I'm glad I listened to him, because the new water heater is a beast. I had a forehead-slapper moment when Al and Chad recommended moving the new unit about 15 feet from its original spot. The new location is better. Round 3: Major drainage surgery. What prompted Round 3 was a downstairs shower leak I hadn't been able to figure out. Turned out the cause was a loose strainer basket. In troubleshooting that, the guys also noticed that our laundry and kitchen drainpipes were pitched too steeply, and that the kitchen drainpipe wasn't vented correctly (which I'd suspected once we caught some bad whiffs in the downstairs bathroom every time we'd run the dishwasher). The kitchen drainpipe also wasn't wide enough. This final shootout wasn't as exciting as Round 2 was, but it was probably the most work. Al and Chad replaced and re-pitched several drainpipes, added cleanouts, replaced a trap, replaced the strainer basket under the shower, and re-puttied the strainer. The end result of Round 3 was we could use the downstairs shower again without leaks (which then allowed me to make some changes to the whole shower area), the pipes were vented properly, and the drainage was faster, didn't cause smells, and less likely to develop a clog. Al and Chad do rock-solid work, are honest and reliable, and are fun and easygoing guys who clearly enjoy their trade. Every time they were over they didn't displace my wife, our baby, or our 3 cats. I say pay to get it done once and get it done right. Our 3-part project cost a good chunk, but it was a ton of work, and included the new water heater (with the max warranty). Every line item was fair and reasonable. If anything, the whole burrito cost a little less than I expected. They may be busy or hard-to-reach when you call or email, but they're worth any back-and-forth and a wait. I doubt we'll need more plumbing work for a while, but if and when we do I'll definitely call Wingman Plumbing.

Strongly recommend! Al and his team were a pleasure to deal with from start to finish. Scheduling…read morewas easy because they were very responsive. I think this is my first review that isn't positive on Yelp…read more But I feel like I was just ripped off. Basically, Aundrey came here for less than one hour and cleaned the dust off the the coils of both of my air conditioners for $650 and didn't even complete the job. He did not have a wet/dry vac so he used mine. He did not bring a ladder so he used mine. He did not provide replacement filters. Breakdown of the cost: From the invoice- 'Service call fee covers technician's trip to the job site, including travel time and transportation costs.' I asked Aundrey where he came from. He said from the office which is right here in Newton. 2.6 miles. 8 minutes. = $150 First Air Conditioner: He diagnosed it immediately. Then he cleaned the coils with a brush and he used my vac as well. Look, I have no problem with him using my equipment. I just never had a worker not have his own tools. I had already bought a new filter for this air conditioner so he didn't have to replace it. Total time, about 15 minutes. = $250 Second Air Conditioner which is in the attic. There is nothing in the attic but the air conditioner unit and we do not go up there ever. You need a ladder to get up there. Aundrey didn't have one. He used one of mine. Same problem. Also, This unit needed a new filter as well and it's a different size than the one downstairs. Aundrey left it without a filter and gave me the size of the filter I should get so that I can install it myself. Again, I can't get up in the attic because I'm physically limited. So my air conditioner is currently running right now with no filter. So, he cleaned the coils for about 20 minutes and left the job undone. = $250. Invoice: $150 Travel Time and Transportation costs. $250 Coil Cleaning and installing a filter that I provided. $250 Coil Cleaning and leaving the unit without a filter _________ $650 Oh, and this nonsense about them getting back to you in 10 minutes, it's an automatic text that tells you to call them. I called after I didn't hear from them for an hour or so. That's a big sum when Aundrey took an hour total including his drive time of 8 minutes and the gas he must have used to go 2.6 miles and then not finish the job while using my tools.

All responded fairly quick (within an hour) and I had given enough information and pictures so they all knew exactly what was needed. I received quotes all the way up to 175/hour plus parts to 225 parts included. Others even wanted to come by and charge me to look at the job to quote me (which they said the fee would be waived if I used them for the job after..but seriously?). Mark responded to call him and leave him a voicemail explaining I had contacted him via a message and he would call me back. He called back within 10 minutes of me leaving the message and spoke to me on the phone. He thanked me for the detailed pictures and asked if I was handy at all as this was a very simple job and he didnt want me to pay a large sum for such a simple job. He said he would come if I still wanted him to but explained everything I would have to do and where to go get the parts. He even said if I get stuck I can call him to come over. The part was cheap around 20 dollars and the work involved seems super simple (I watched some videos on youtube on how to do this). I havent fixed it yet as I am waiting for the part but i am confident now thanks to his information and knowing I can call him if I need him to come for the job. Its hard to find good contractors for work such as this and I am keeping his number for any future jobs.

He is generally very helpful with knowledge and good with talking through planned permit work or a good story to boot. He just recently installed the final touch for a whole home portable backup generator at my home, a new 3/4in gas line basement run to supply the generator (or maybe a deck grill someday), the inspector was very accomodating and approved the work quickly! He has also previously helped with regular maintenance like water heater anode rod replacement and a few gate to ball valve replacements for leaky or seized water valves. See photos below of the gas line connection and whole home portable backup generator setup. Apparently it's "unusual" here in MA to have whole home portable backup power (Costco bargain!), everyone is told a $15k concrete slab generator is the minimum, at least, that is what Castle Electric said to me! Do it yourself for a 1/3rd of the cost with Marks help and skip the upselling from the "other" options out there!
