Outdoor Pilates Class at Castaways
Liana B.

I recently began M/Body by the recommendation of a friend and I am so glad I gave it a try. My favorite instructors so far have been Molly and Heather who offer tough workouts and plenty of encouragement. I have been wanting to workout for months but was reluctant to because of COVID. However, what I found was unique about M/Body is that they are offering virtual and in person outdoor classes. I appreciate this hybrid because if you're comfortable to workout in person you are able to, but if you want to remain in the comfort of your own home you can still get a killer workout. Additionally, its nice if you live further away you don't have to make the drive to University everyday either. For virtual classes, they will email you a link 20-30 minutes prior to the start time to follow the live stream. For the outdoor classes, they are offered in the parking lot. They are also doing some classes at other locations and bars to change up the scenery which is cool too. They instruct everyone to wear a mask until in your designated workspace, when socializing with others/moving to other areas, and on your way out. You are spaced out by parking spaces offering a natural barrier, or instructed to remain 6 feet from others at other outdoor locations where visual cues may not be present. Another positive and quite frankly another reason I chose it over other gyms was because M/Body offers a variety of classes and class times to accommodate all kinds of schedules. They offer early morning, mid day and night classes. They mainly offer HIIT workouts, barre classes and cycling but have others too. You sign up for all classes on the app where you can find the class descriptions, the instructors name, and times the class is offered. It really couldn't be more simple even for someone who struggles at technology. After the class, you can review your experience or add suggestions on the app too. Overall, I'm really happy with my experience at M/Body and everything it has to offer. It is an expensive gym, but I believe it is worth it for the quality, variety, uniqueness and safety. I will be recommending it to others.

Ever hear the cliche "summer bodies are made in the winter"? I've heard it a million times and I'm not sure how much I believe it. Either way, as New Year's Resolution season draws to a close, going to the gym can be highly beneficial in beating those winter blahs. For me, M/Body has nothing to do with "making a summer body", but has everything to do with providing structure, challenge, and the variety I need in my workouts. I recently purchased another three months, and I couldn't be happier. M/Body is set up for classes, which happen to be my favorites. It's easier to work out when someone is telling you what to do, and easier when you treat the workout as a team effort. All the classes work together, no one sets the pace as too advanced, and you can modify the hard stuff to your heart's content. My favorites include: CycleFunk with Liza-the reason I signed up in the first place. I'd taken her spinning classes at the JCC and loved the idea of riding as a group, setting your own resistance on the bike, and cruising to motivating music. M/BodyBarre with both Gina L and Gina F-clearly the Ginas have dominance on my favorite barre classes! Gina L's classes work all those isolated muscles and really push you, while Gina F's classes incorporate those sweeping ballet moves I adore. Both classes seem to hit the spot exactly when I need them. Vinyasa Yoga with both Susan and Meg-I don't always have time to get to yoga, but when I do, Susan and Meg's classes seem to always agree with me. The yoga room is soft and welcoming, and I love being able to not feel like my frequent modifications are making me fall behind. I find it rare when everyone in class is using blocks, so I feel right at home with my blocks at M/Body's beautiful yoga room. BoxingFusion-I've recently added this to my schedule and I'm digging it! All of the boxing teachers are wonderful and helpful. The classes have been set up in circuits, so rotating through stations keeps it interesting and makes the workout go faster. If you're new to boxing, I definitely suggest trying it. The class structure is set up so you can sign up in advance. I definitely recommend doing it this way for both accountability (you're already signed up, so you shouldn't take that spot from someone) and for offering structure in your day. The timeslot is already carved out for you, so you don't need to find time to work out. It's that simple. Did I mention the beautiful facilities? I think I alluded to them, but you really have to see it for yourself. I never feel like I'm in a gym, more often I feel like I'm relaxing the day away at a spa. Plus, having Just Juice in the same space is nice because if I want a smoothie after my workout, I don't have to go far at all. Molly and her staff go out of the way to welcome you and make you feel like a part of the community. Who wouldn't want that out of a gym? It's a big reason why I keep going back, the customer service is outstanding. While I may not be focusing on my "summer body", going to class at M/Body helps me beat the winter blahs and escape for an hour or two. I can't wait to see what M/Body has in store for the future.

My journey with M/Body has just started, but I wanted to wait until I took multiple classes to give you the review with all the scoop. It all started with Bre's Yelp Fit Club event where I tried the Cycle Funk class, given by the instructor "Bear". That class kicked my butt, with the pumping music, switching gears, and bike sprints. Needless to say, it was my first spin class, and it was enough to get me to sit down and seriously evaluate my lifestyle. Pricing: I sat on it over the weekend, and came back on Tuesday after Memorial Day to purchase 3 months of unlimited classes for $299 (a special that runs until May 31st). You can purchase a month unlimited, 3 months unlimited, or 6 months until the end of the month for $99/$299/$599. It seems like a lot up front, but it is worth it. Normal rates are $130/mo unlimited. If you do the math, if you take 20 classes in a month, that is less than $5 a class. It is a steal. They also offer various bundles of classes, check out their pricing on their website. If you want to make a purchase of a bundle or a monthly package, especially before the end of a special, you can do so and then put a specification on when you want it to activate (nice for teachers who want to get fit in the summer, etc.) Location: It is closest to the Culver/University cross street. Super convenient for city people who need a close place that isn't out of the way to actually attend. I have been walking from Park Ave and it is a quick 10 minute walk. Interior: Very Japanese style, sleek and minimalist. You check in at the front desk, and to your left is the Just Juice Bar, offering sandwiches, salads, and lots of pre or post work out power fuel. They have clothes for purchase in the main area. The yoga room is gigantic, they have very relaxing lights, warm colored walls, and a wall full of belts, blocks, and bolsters for all of your yogi needs. The barre room is mirrored, with small exercise balls on the barres for class. I had a class with 12 people and it fit everyone comfortably. The exercise bike/boxing area is very large, with top of the line equipment. There is a motion centered water fountain in this room. The bathroom/changing rooms are gorgeous, and brand new. I love how clean they are, and wouldn't have to think twice about taking a post-workout shower. The ladies' room is stacked with amenities if needed, such as feminine products and hairties if yours snaps last minute. The Classes: So far I have taken a spin class, boxing, a foundational yoga class, and barre. I am over the moon for the instructors. They push you but are motivating, and are very concerned for you as the individual. Some background info about myself: I had a pretty serious back injury a year ago, and due to this, I gained more weight that I wanted to. It also made "getting back into it" a struggle, because it is really easy to re-aggravate it. The instructors here do not make me feel like I am in a militant gym, yelling at me, or make me feel uncomfortable. I think that taking classes here you will be with the best of the best, no matter if you are 100 lbs overweight, coming off an injury, or have never done this kind of exercise before. They are kind with showing modifications, and make it clear that a modification doesn't necessarily mean that what you are doing is "easier", it is just better for you. I was intimidated at first because I haven't taken barre, boxing or spin EVER before this week. I am hooked, and happy with the supportive atmosphere from the wide range of experts. This isn't just a chick gym, there are male instructors, and men that take classes too. I had a guy in my yoga class, and he rocked it. Some classes are more instructional and really reteach you the proper way to stretch, do core, etc. Other classes are more advanced, but you just jump into it, and the teachers know your level and help you do the exercise that is best for you. I love that they have yoga separate from their fitness courses in the online layout, it makes it easier to sign up for classes. The times that they offer start really early for those people that want to get in before work, and they offer lots of lunch hour classes/after work hour classes. This place is all about convenience. Signing Up: When you want to go to a class, you sign in to your account online, and look at the schedule. You click on the class you want and sign yourself up for it. This helps with accountability, instead of last minute you decide to flake out because you aren't feeling it. Since you are paying for it right then and there, you will go, you will do it, rock it, and feel great after you are finished.

Took Jen's 12 pm yoga class in the middle of a workday. Wow. It was one of the hardest workouts I've ever done. I'm still sore! She took time to learn about our level of experience and tailored the class to challenge us. I loved working on head and handstands- really pushed myself and learned things I did not know before. They have every prop imaginable and the room is just as I like it...dark wood, dark-lit, warm accent lighting, high ceilings. I will definitely come back. Plus the rest of facility is gorgeous. The locker room is impeccable, with amenities like soap, a hairdryer and lotions so you can freshen up. The coolest stone sink. So classy. They have a great selection of high-end workout apparel and you canNOT beat Just Juice 4 Life being in the same building! Awesome way to power up after you've given your all. This is a sweet place and I can't wait to try out some more classes.

Spin bikes

This is the only place I work out in Rochester, I had a RAC membership and was pretty disappointed by the class selection and times they offered them. I got a free m/body class and tried circuit training and was hooked from the first class. My other favorites are body sculpt and spinning. The owner (Molly) is fantastic and hands-on and teaches a lot of classes but every class I've taken has been fantastic. They have a juice bar and also offer fun classes like barre to brunch on Sundays once a month. The only downside is that it's pricey but if you get an unlimited pass and go 2-3x per week it's well worth the cost- you'll definitely see results! They also offer new client specials and existing member specials every few months so that helps offset the cost. I'd rather pay for this than a monthly "low cost" membership to another gym that I never use.

I paid $100 for 4 lessons, thinking they have professional instructors  to teach me how to swim. When I went there, they looked at me and my mom like we are aliens. The lady, that was supposed to be in charge said that she wasn't aware we were coming and I specifically signed up for adult class! The two trainers, as you can tell, were pushed on us. One had her arms folded and the other said "um, let me see what else I can I do to teach you". They didn't have any plan and we're making things up as they go. My mother and I were struggling in the water and they laughed at us. We were laughing at ourselves,  but they instructors and should know what to do. Me and my mother went online for swimming beginner tips, and the first thing is to learn how to breath underwater and they didn't do anything like that. They told us to dip our heads under water and that's it. They didn't tell us how to breath or nothing. Mr. Ben Whipple, the director, is a joke. He won't listen to you at all and only thinks about money and not the quality of the service. He has every excuse in the world not to try to rectify the situation. He was trying to blame us for holding classes that the lady in charge didn't know we were coming. I didn't feel comfortable continuing the lessons. Now, I'm going somewhere else to learn how to swim and this whole experience made me even more afraid. Some adults have fears and try to conquer them. When you have incompetent instructors, that can exacerbate your fears. This is water! I could drown! I already told them, that I had very bad experiences when I was young. I'm still going to try to teach myself how to swim. The sad part is, that I had to go to Youtube to see what I needed to do as a beginner. When you are taking someone's money, you should have a plan and not have adults in little kid's classes!! I regret paying for these lesson if you are a beginner, don't waste your time or money here!

I have only attended 2 classes here so far but each has been awesome. I like the actual studio…read morespace/vibe, the fact that there is great easy parking, and that the instructors are great motivators. Each class was different, both were challenging, and I like how I feel at the end of each session. I also like how the instructor gets into your head, knows what you might be thinking and has a mantra or story to help you get out of it. Philosophically, I feel like this place fits me and where I am mentally when I practice. I highly recommend signing up online for classes and/or investing in a pass (which I haven't done yet). I have been doing the drop-in thing and the room can be packed - in fact both of the classes I've attended so far have been packed with up to 40 people in the room, 10 mats to a row, which can be challenging if you are not familiar with yoga and/or fit enough to do your poses without risking losing your balance. However, the community of folks who attend all seem very friendly and forgiving! I also really appreciate the instructors providing verbal prompts for further challenge yourself or for easing off/modifying the pose as needed. Something you sometimes feel is missing in other studios where a one-size-fits-all approach is delivered. I definitely recommend giving them a visit, especially as a comparison to some of the other studios around town. My only lament is that I wish they were closer to downtown Rochester....mainly because of the winter weather and the fact that a round trip for me means a 2.5-3 hour investment of time....but for now I am managing it!

Balance is an awesome studio with an amazing sense of community. I've taken classes with Erica, MJ,…read moreand Melissa, and they have all been wonderful. It is evident that the instructors care deeply about their mission. I have not been to the new location yet, but if it weren't for geography and harsh winters (25-35 min. commute), I would be there every day. I highly recommend this studio to anyone in the Webster and nearby areas.
