I'm firstly surprised this store has been here in this location since 2007 when it was first reviewed, it has obviously been taken care of and refurbished since then which is a good sign. Interestingly, this is one of the few stores to not have one of the new signs "Waitrose and Partners" which all branches of Waitrose and John Lewis seem to be, rebranded as. They have multiple counters here for fish and sushi, meat, cheese and more. You could potentially get a great deal of your weekly shop here, it is larger than your typical Little Waitrose store, yet smaller than your average Waitrose supermarket but is still a decent size, with coffee machines and a small amount of outdoor seating to grab your loyalty scheme free beverage. The outdoor seating area, being on a busy road isn't the nicest of places to sit, especially considering this part of town is prone to the standard beggars and Big Issue sellers who seemed a little harassing. A decent branch, they seem to have a smaller product range of everything you'd normally find in a Waitrose, with the gluten-free selection being especially sub-par compared to other branches but still it's a decent store in a great location, making it pretty good to grab essentials or more while in Brighton centre. 3*

Helpful staff, though check-out queues can be long, and some of the aisles are a bit narrow. Good wine section. Helpfully, there are bus stops right outside to a wide range of destinations. Also opposite is the Taj Foods supermarket (see separate review), for all sorts of organic stuff, authentic Asian produce and exotic fruits, if you want a wider choice of these items. There's a life up to the car park area at the rear (on the first floor).

The checkout area could have been much more centred towards a to-go market, with it being a small convenience style store, one would often come into this store when in a rush, passing through or commuting in the city so improvements could be made here. Apart from that, it felt like a pretty average and typical Tesco Express location possibly in a smaller town, the store did seem slightly small especially compared to nearby rivals in such a large city, with Waitrose, Sainsbury's Local, and Co-op Food all having rival stores nearby, although I did have multiple issues with the latter brands on that list. Meh, I've experienced better pretty much sums this one up. Useful location for the bare minimum basic essentials. 2*

And giving Tesco permission to open an Express store in the North Laines. The area has been home to hundreds of cool and quirky independent shops for decades and as we all know, one of Tesco's trademarks is elbowing and crushing small businesses out of the way. If it was an emergency I'd go in this branch for Nurofen or wine but I'd never buy my groceries or store-room goodies from here. It's cheap but soul-less.

It shows how cheap Morrisons is that we managed to get three bags of groceries, pasta, rice, tomato sauce and so on for approx £32. The icing on the cake, is that lots of the store cupboard stables we bought were leading brands that would have cost 25-50% more at all of the above. So, why haven't I given it 4 stars? Well, the shop layout is ugly as sin and the small aisles means it's constantly busy. There's no parking and the tills are so jam-packed it's hard to pack your groceries without feeling rushed. The fresh meat, fish and bakery counters are also much smaller than at the main Morrisons supermarkets across the country. With so many bargains on offer however, it's unlikely many others customers will care or notice these misdemeanours.

As far as selection goes, Morissons has as much to offer as Sainsbury's, but the design of Morrisons must be more compact or efficient - it has the feel of a smaller grocer and doesn't take as long to manoeuvre through the aisles. Prices are reasonable - lower than Sainsbury's - and the Morrison line of foods (that also comes in a Smart Eating variety) is even cheaper. Produce is fantastic - apples so shiny they almost glow - and the fishmonger area smells authentically like the seaside. Staff members are alert and friendly, and sound genuinely interested in helping customers. Even the customers themselves seem a nicer bunch. The only downside is the queue length at checkout - yikes. Although, today might still have been showing the effects of the recent snow-melt. The spring time weather has everyone out, ready to fill their cupboards in case crazy snow happens again.

Everything is great quality and CHEEEAP! Yeah it looks a bit scummy but whatever that place is - the building will ALWAYS look grubby for some reason. It did when it was Sainsbury's. Good quality bags of veg for 40p, free range chickens for £4, great selections of cured meats and cheeses and wait til I get to the booze! Oh the booze! Delicious bottles of Malbec and Pinot noir (to name some of many) for £4! It'd be silly of me to shop elsewhere really. They also sell good little gardening bits too. My only gripe is there aren't enough check outs and only a couple of people manning the stations. But I LOVE ALDI!

Well you know that feeling of sticking your hand inside a lucky dip and just not knowing what your going to pick out, the excitement, the nerves, the sheer joy of the pick, and not of the end result. That is why I give this Aldi five stars. The way that the shop is laid out means that is is essentially a lucky dip on a grand scale. There is a big middle stand kind of thing that doesn't really sell items that have any relevance to each other. I saw Eggnog, and Tuna in very close proximity to each other. O.K. these products shouldn't be that close, but what I love about Aldi is that doesn't care about stupid convention. Oh No. There's inevitably a lot in this Aldi store that you don't need or want, but to about every 4 of these, there is one gem which is well worth a visit almost just for that item. In my experience, it is the natural yoghurt for only 50p per large pot, which tickles my fancy somewhat. In fact have taken detours just for this one thing, which I have bought in bulk. Not 5 stars in the kind of way which 5 stars would normally be awarded, but 5 stars for the whole, disorganised, mad, pot luck experience.

My skinny housemate who could literally eat me, and put on only about 2 kilos comes here to add to his unhealthy diet with the ridiculously cheap chocolate cookies that they have on sale. I think the cookies had been reduced twice and he bought two packets (10 cookies) for something stupid like 50 pence, whilst I (with a metabolism more like that of a human) bought some apples which were also reduced to just £1 for a packet of around 10! Bargain. Though not so tasty lets be honest. Other than that the produce is generally the type that you'd buy on the run, and not your weekly shop kind. Decent selection of magazines here too, so something to get your teeth into on a long journey.

This is probably the least customer friendly branch of Asda I've ever used…read more As it is open 24hrs I have shopped at all hours, and find problems whenever I go there. In fact I only use because it's on my way to/from work, and it's open 24hrs. I frequently find the shelves empty of want I'm after. Sometimes they are on the trolleys waiting to be put out, but more often than not, they don't have them. And whilst we're talking of the stock trolleys/roll-pallets, why do they have to leave them in the middle of the aisles? If you shop during the evening or at night, I is often impossible to actually go down some aisles because they are blocked by stock waiting to be put out. And the staff have a habit of standing and chatting amongst themselves totaly oblivious to the customers. Sometimes it takes saying excuse me a couple of times, or a quick jab with the trolley, to actually get them to move. And I would never buy anything frozen from them. I have seen, and been told by an ex-employee, that frozen products are sometimes left out waiting to be put in a freezer for longer than half an hour. However, they do have some good points such as being 24hrs. Also they do some weird offers. This week I have bought two packets of cereals for £2, when they are £2.15 each; and five Muller Lights for £1.00 when they are 54p each! Bargains! They also have a petrol station which is normally one of the cheapest in the area

I'm not entirely sure why I go out of my way to go here sometimes, I just end up leaving feeling…read morestressed. It's ALWAYS the wrong time! Screaming children, people tottering around aimlessly with trolleys, a less then impressive food selection, I could go on! I can't decide whether it's ASDA I don't like, or just supermarkets in general! The staff always seem friendly enough, I have fond memories of being an ASDA checkout girl during one summer in my teens. I liked being chatty to the customers (I'm not sure whether that was encouraged or not!) But I always have a good natter with the checkout ladies. It can be pretty monotonous scanning food all day long. My other half likes to spend ages looking around the electricals section, some bargains to be had apparently! We didn't come home with a new TV or speaker set this time.

I finally realised how old and uncool I was when found out that a new Sainsbury's Local was being…read morebuilt at the end of my road, and the discovery was basically the highlight of my week. Admittedly the prospect of being delivered from the evils of the nearby Tesco Express would probably be enough to raise most people's spirits, but it was with a rather unhealthy level of longing that I gazed upon the wooden facing that for a few weeks shielded the work going on inside. The Sainsbury's is now open, and, unsurprisingly, it's OK. Nothing amazing, but it's definitely an improvement. For one thing they sell coffee filter papers, but their stock in general is more wide ranging. I even managed to buy hollandaise sauce in there, although I wouldn't recommend hollandaise out of a jar, it turned out to taste of jellied vinegar. They have more service points than the Tesco too, and the cherry on the cake is the free cashpoint. Until that one arrived it was a good 10 minute walk in either direction to get to a free cashpoint, which meant a lot of money was wasted on buying small items in the Tesco in order to get cash back.
