Yes, Hagaparken is fantastic and massive, and definitely takes second place. But there's something so personal, so special, about Vita Bergen. While Hagaparken feels modern, there's something classic and romantic about Vitabergsparken. Perhaps it's the name, White Mountains. Perhaps it's the decadent and impressive Sofia Church, more than 100 years old, which towers upon the hill. Perhaps it's the history - this part of Södermalm has had its name since the early 1800s. It was once one of the poorest parts of Stockholm, and Swedish playwright August Strindberg featured the area in his novel The Red Room. Today it's one of the most hip and vibrant parts of the island, located right by Nytorget, aka the cafe and cultural centrum of Stockholm's artsy elite. The park is massive, and has an outdoor amphitheatre, a gazebo, a playground, and plenty of trees and alcoves with BBQ grills and picnic tables. There are always friends and couples and families relaxing here, and the park echoes with laughter - but there's always room to put down a blanket and have your own little square of peace and quiet. But it also has its modern and even futuristic aspects. Here's a little trivia: Deep in the mountains, the Pionen center is nestled. Pionen used to be a civil defence center and Cold War bunker, but in 2008 it was converted into a data center. I haven't been in there, and I'm not sure you can get in at all if you don't work there, but there are some pretty awesome pictures online - it's a deep-space modern data center featuring fountains, a fish tank, greenhouses, and more, below 30 metres of granite. Anyway, let's go back above ground. Vitaberg is my go-to spot for picnics, fika, playing games like Swedish 'kubb', and also big events like birthday celebrations and of course Midsummer. The park is also famous for its amphitheatre which is used frequently for the Summer Theatre series, with plays, ballet, and poetry onstage multiple nights a week. It's green, lush, clean, and quiet. The winding, meandering paths zigzag across the hill, and it's easy to take the path less travelled here. It's easy to get lost, but it's easy to get found. A dozen hidden staircases take you down from the hills onto the street, and quaint red-painted cottages dot the edges. It's a perfect place for sunrise, and unbeatable for sunsets. It's no wonder that Vitaberg has been featured in multiple modern Swedish pop songs. There's a popular song by Rebecca & Fiona called 'The Bells of Vitaberg': "When the bells of Vitaberg ring, you know that the night is ours. Time is running when Vitaberg's bells ring; you know the night is ours, and my heart is pounding."

Aside from beautiful grounds, fun amenities like grills and mini golf, the real attraction for me was the sauna. You can sauna and then walk to the lake and swim in the frigid water. In the winter this is all also available with the caveat that the lake is partially or fully frozen, but I've heard they enable swimming after saunaing even in the summer. You should expect to be nude while saunaing and it's perfectly fine to be nude while swimming. There may be a small amount of culture shock for some Americans but if you just try to enjoy the hot-cold cycles you'll be totally fine. The feeling of swimming in the cold lake is refreshing beyond what you can really imagine elsewhere. The price to sauna is ~60 SEK per person, renting a towel was an additional 30 SEK (non-refundable rental) and they will rent a lock for the locker. It comes out to about $10 to go to the sauna. They have crocs or sandals for you to use in the locker room and even offer water bottles for free (I would highly recommend one). The saunas are gender separated. There's a changing room, shower room and sauna. If you've never sauna'd in Europe before here are tips: shower first before getting in. Sit on your towel in the sauna, stay lower down on the seats if you want to be cooler. Afterwards cool yourself off in the lake, and remember the code to the door so you can get back in! Repeat the sauna / swim as much as you like (and as long as you feel good). I'd definitely recommend this experience as part of a short trip to Stockholm. The experience is really refreshing.

Take the train to Slussen and go down another level to find the 401 bus. Nice views of the towns outside of the city center. Activities for all. Even a gym with different weighted wooden machines for squats, presses, etc. I opted for the 10k green trail. Some parts were more climbing/hiking but gorgeous throughout the forest and great lake views. The cafe food looked delicious but I only enjoyed a glass of fresh OJ since I want to check out some other restaurants. Family friendly environment and not a tourist in sight. Great way to experience nature the way the Swedes do.

Easy accessible with lots - really lots - of free parking space right in front. Some bathrooms are right at front - also where the public bus stops. A map provides first informations about the park. Just a bit further is a bigger settlement with informations, more bathrooms and a restaurant. Several well marked trails lead around the park. We took the trail from the park entrance around Lake Bylsjön and back. Around 4-5km roundtrip. On open fields and through a farm settlement at first, the trail later on leads through charming forests and then around the small, but wonderful Lake Bylsjön. Some spots were perfect for our dog to take a dip in the water. And there's a nice picknick place right at the lake as well. Half of the path is flat and easy (clockwise seen) and accessible by wheelchairs and strollers with a bit of work. The other half is still flat, but in no ways accessible by wheelchairs and strollers. We had a great time here at the park. Even though it was full summer, the park only had few visitors. Strange, because it's so easy to access and so close to Stockholm. Free entrance and parking, wonderful forests and landscapes. One of the very good Parks we've visited on our Sweden Road Trip. Loved it.
