We visited Vaxholm during the off season (December) and really enjoyed our visit. We took the local ferry from Stockholm, which was a very nice experience. The journey took about one hour and took us past a bunch of quaint islands. The return trip cost about 150kl/ person and you can use your access card.
Upon arriving at Vaxholm, we took a quick look at the Christmas market before striking off to explore. The town itself is quite small, but with everything one might need from banks to local shops. I expected to be able to explore the local surroundings more, but there wasn't much to explore. I was a bit disappointed that one could access Vaxholm by land, which of course detracted from the island vibe.
We enjoyed our time in Vaxholm as the boat ride there and back was stunningly beautiful. We returned to Stockholm at night and were able to view the lights of the city. Viewing a city from the water is always a great experience.
I would highly recommend taking the local ferry to explore the archipelago with Vaxholm being an easy destination. Boats between Vaxholm and Stockholm run frequently making it an easy day trip and reducing your risk of getting stuck on an island!! read more
