I make it a point to visit this quaint small Irish town on the Shannon and stay at the Old Castle House. If you really want to get the feel for the Irish people and Irish hospitality, you must stay in any one of the fine Irish B&B's and this one is on the Tops of my B&B Recommendations for the West of Ireland. Finally got to meet Ester in person this last time around when I made a point to be staying on my birthday, and happened to be spending time with another American couple who was also celebrating a birthday on the same day, and The Dunne's made it memorable. Jack and Ester have become like part of my Irish Family. The Accommodations are cozy and comfortable and always well kept. Don't come expecting the cold and impersonal feeling of a 4 or 5 star international hotel, but rather the warmth, personality and coziness of a well appointed and comfortable Irish home. Fresh Eggs in the morning supplied by the Dunne's Chickens accent a wonderful Irish Breakfast and it's always a treat to finish off the evening with a couple pints and a dram around the corner at the Dunne's Bar est in 1820 then take a short walk back to the B&B to settle in for a cozy night's sleep. Glin is a small town on the Shannon where you can just sit by the stream with some tea and relax or, if you're like me, makes a good base for any number of day trips in the SouthWest and West of Ireland...for instance: to the Ring of Kerry & Dingle Area about 1 hour or so south, Foynes Flying Boat Museum (where the Pan Am Flying Boats used to dock and where Irish Coffee was invented) just 15 minutes down the road, Limerick City and King John's Castle about 30 to 45 minutes further East, Bunratty Castle & Folk Park (a must visit...give yourself 2 to 3 hours minimum) about 1 hour around the eastern end of the Shannon then head up to the Cliffs of Moher (about another hour or so further) and back down the west Coast of Co. Clare as the sun sets... taking a Ferry Ride across the Shannon from Kilmer to Tarbert. Glin is quiet and the 2 pubs, Dunne's Pub being one of them, don't serve food so with only 2 take away places in town ask Jack & Ester for a recommendation to one of the nearby Restaurants...The Old Stand Bar & Restaurant in Shanagolden (about 20 minute ride) is very comfortable with a very good menu and a nice bar or Enright's in Tarbert is quaint with a nice menu that usually includes fresh fish...but get there early.

Myself and my partner…read moredrove around for quite a while and began to feel we'd never find the place, but the locals are more than happy to give directions and getting a little bit lost is part of the fun of traveling. Once you do find it, St. Martin's is perfect. Mary is a wonderful hostess. She is so friendly and more than happy to give you advice on where to go and what to see. Her breakfast was fantastic. And her brown bread was the best we had in Ireland. I wish I could have some right now. The location is perfect for Galway, just a two minute walk over the bridge to the center of town. It has all the benefits of being right in the city, like walking to the pubs and shops and easy access to all the city's sights, but since it's just over the bridge, it's quiet too... and we were there on Friday and Saturday nights. Our room was very comfortable and the bathroom clean. We ate breakfast looking out on Mary's beautiful garden with Galway just beyond. It couldn't have been a better experience. I only hope we'll have a chance to stay their again.

This bed & breakfast is in one the most attractive & tranquil rural settings that I've ever stayed…read morein, near to the river Blackwater. It's just outside the small village of Banteer, and around 17km west of the town of Mallow in north Co. Cork. Agherton Lodge is a 2-storey detached house in a very striking setting, so much so that you feel like you're the lord or lady of the manner staying in this environment, in a pleasant ranch-like way. A really nice lady who was originally from the north welcomed us the early evening we arrived, and she very kindly laid us out tea, coffee & biscuits in the open plan front room, which was much appreciated. There were spacious solid wood floors throughout, (good for my asthma), it all looked both spotlessly clean & new, as well as warm & inviting. There were 4 of us, 1 woman, 3 blokes, staying in 3 rooms. Our 'boss' and only girl each had spacious double rooms to themselves, I shared an equally spacious twin room with the other guy. It was €35 each, which I felt was very good for this standard of accommodation. The bedrooms were fantastic, bright, breezy & cheerful, all with ensuite. The doubles have a lovely indulgent looking bath. Jo was so impressed she photographed hers! The beds, even the singles were blissfully comfortable. My room had a superb south facing view of fields, trees & rolling hills in the background and horses,(very frisky horses), in the foreground, with big french windows that opened onto a balcony. It was just so lovely & peaceful standing on the balcony & watching the horses frolic around, on a lovely mild evening in October, and relaxed me completely before a show I was doing at the nearby Glen Theatre. After a bit of a drink with the generous guys at The Glen, the B&B was equally welcoming at night. It was quiet season I should stress, and it was just us 4 in residence, but bearing in that the mind the couple running it had a son, & a very friendly dog, we were given loads of space, and truly felt it was ours! Breakfast next morning was to an equally high standard, and generous. I always love places that don't seem like guesthouses but places that you feel, well at home in, and we all definitely felt at home here. Real 5 star quality, and a lovely place to base yourself if you want to explore Cork & Kerry by car.

The dining room is spacious and decorated in a classically elegant style, softly lit by wall-mounted lights and candles.
