Part of the agreement included filling in all cracks before sealing, but several were left untouched. He also promised to apply two coats of sealant but barely managed one -- and the coverage was noticeably uneven. His equipment broke down multiple times (including different machines), causing a four-day delay in what should have been a straightforward job. It was clear throughout the process that he lacked the necessary knowledge and expertise for the work. To make matters worse, he caused a scene at the end, demanding payment despite the poor quality and incomplete work. We do not recommend Richards General Contracting for any commercial or professional sealing projects.

Upstairs my 60+ year old home, a single, 15-amp circuit breaker, handled 2 bedrooms, a sewing room,…read moreand a bathroom. That was fine in the pre-computer age, but, now, constant breaker tripping due to excessive wattage (a hand-held hair-dryer is enough to blow it). One day, for no apparent reason, the power went off to those rooms, and I went to the basement to reset the breaker, only to find that it wasn't tripped! I flipped it a couple of times to no avail. So, I called a few electricians, but, everyone was busy or said it would take a week-plus just to get an estimate (and, in some cases, charge me $100 for the privilege). Mannino sent a man the next day, who gave me a $8,000 estimate which, allegedly, included a senior discount, which isn't listed on the itemized receipt; basically, rewire the 15-amp outlet in the bathroom; install 20-amp circuit breakers and corresponding outlets (one in each affected room) to avoid future blowouts (i.e., put high-wattage devices on the 20-amp outlet); and install new switches (I had done so some time ago, so, I thought that part was unnecessary, but, I let it go). That was a lower cost than I expected, but, the shock (no pun intended) came when they said there would be an upcharge to use my credit/debit card! I could understand that for a far lower-cost work, but, most companies waive such for higher-priced work, such as this (who carries that much cash? and don't add to the pain of wallet-punched customers!). Three separate days and workers to do rewiring and installing, the last part of which involved 2 men: one to do the room-to-room work, while the other was fed wires through the walls and attic and down to the outlets (n.b., this was in the fall, so, it was cool in the attic). They had to cut holes in the basement floor, and drywalls throughout the ground and second floors. They don't repair drywall, but, fortunately, I can, so, that wasn't an issue (took a couple of weeks with a rough cost of $150, incl parts and paint). One of the repairmen was a bit gruff, patronizing me for the short time he was here, clearly unhappy dealing with an "uninformed" customer, to the point of forcing me to listen to him explain ("I want to educate my customers" . . . whether we want to hear it or not!) about "daisy-chaining" the wires; I had never heard that term used for anything other than computer networks (I'm a computer programmer/webmaster/computer repairman), so, I asked whether he meant "wiring in series." He was visibly chagrined that I knew that (I'm also a handyman for over 40 years; my father was an electrical engineer who taught me a lot, but, not enough to do a major repair/install, like this; he wouldn't have done it, either!). The other three men were much more affable, and, politely, explained everything they were going to do before they did it (one of them said that the first man's planned layout - - which would have required cutting across the ceiling drywall, which would have been much harder to repair - - was not necessary, thank goodness). All-in-all, they did a great job, although, for some reason, one of the wires gave the attic guy a lot of trouble, causing him to drill many times for a single wire. I have yet to inspect the attic to see what damage, if any, was done, but, whatever it was, it isn't visible from inside the house, so, I'm okay with that (so far!). Between the credit card upcharge ($330), which no other repairman - - plumber, mason, landscaper, etc - - has charged, the alleged senior discount (again, not listed on the receipt), and the gruff repairman, I deducted a star. P.S. My drywall repair went great! You can hardly tell that anything was done there, unless you walk right up to it and compare the new paint vs old! Anyone need a handyman? ;)

For the negative reviewers, I am not family to Tom, not one of his Facebook friends, etc. Nor have I been offered a gift card. I was introduced to him by another contractor whom I've known for a number of years and trust his judgement. We had to take on a roof project when we had a slow leak destroy a corner of our laundry room. When I took apart the ceiling it was obvious that this had been going on for a while. We'd had this fixed previously though the water had found a way to come back and had gotten much more serious. This occurred about March timeframe so it was problematic getting someone to come out. Tom came out with Alex and did a thorough check of the roof, found the area in question, and provided options. The part of the roof with problems wasn't quite a flat roof but wasn't pitched enough to always shed water. We wanted something we would never have to worry about again, plus while we were fixing this one side we figured on just doing the whole thing and making it right. Tom gave us a few different options. We did also contact a couple other roofing companies to get competing quotes. We decided to go with Tom because we felt the price was fair for the value - not cheap, or cheapest but well explained as to what was going to be done. We also had a solar installation to remove, and Tom knew of a firm that could do this (which ended up being the same people the solar company recommended). It took almost 6 weeks to get the requisite approvals from the town thanks to the 'Rona, but once that was done, we made our down payment and then maybe only another 2 weeks to get everything ordered and on-site. The crew ended up having to strip the roof down which was an unexpected add-on but not egregious. (This actually helped to ensure that we were able to get the water damaged area completely taken care of later.) The crew brought a big dump trailer and tarped off all of my gardens around the house. Considering what came off the house (two layers of shingles, tarpaper, drip edges, flashing, nails, etc.) they did a pretty good job keeping stuff from getting everywhere. There were a couple of spots where it wasn't perfect but they took care of it. The team that did the roof was extremely polite and professional. They came to the house early, worked their butts off all day, and stayed late. They definitely understood the technical aspects of the roof system and ensured that the components were applied in the right order, using the correct methods. It was easy to see they took pride in what they were doing. The results were outstanding. First and foremost, no more leaks (there was a false alarm on this but more about that in a bit). Second, the job they did was professional and looks great. The small details were well taken care of. Third, I had no issues getting a hold of Tom, Alex, or the team working on the house. I always knew what was going on. This extended to after the job was done. About 6 weeks after this finished, it had rained heavily and I discovered some water damage to a bathroom ceiling. Naturally, I thought something was wrong with the roof. So I texted Tom and asked him about it. He said he would be right on it. Alex called me in 5 minutes and set up a time to come take a look. Long story short, it wasn't the roof but the way the original plumber did the vent. Fixing the roof just exposed the problem with the way the vent was installed. I would recommend Tom and TH for roofs without reservation.

We were very nervous because the work we were having done was much more than we had engaged someone to do before, and everyone has heard a horror story about a contractor / bad home project. Our project was a finished half of our basement, including a full bath, mini-split HVAC, new electrical panel and framing around mechanicals that meant creating a mini-boiler room. The work that Eric's team did came out beautifully, the electrical and plumbing team he used was top notch, and we have a space we are very happy with. It seemed almost miraculous to us that with Eric, there really *was* nothing to worry about. What he said would happen, happened. When we had a question, we called him -- and he always took our calls and responded, fast, not to mention he was always up for a good laugh. He made practical recommendations that met what we said we needed, his people showed up when he said, and the work got done while staying completely out of our hair. It is true what their site says, that NEC is a family-run, long time business in this area, and it shows. Eric is a great guy, fun person to talk to, and he takes true pride in his work, as does his family who work with him every day. If you have a job that really matters to you, then I recommend you get a true general contractor, and that is definitely Eric.
